One of Australasia's all time great race mares Ethereal has one of her youngsters debuting today in New Zealand 1.31 our time. Ebullient.

When racemares of this calibre have progeny hit the track it should be front page news on the major daily's.

I think Ebullient went real well today. By the end of the year, provided he is a sound conveyance of course, I reckon he will be top class.

you would think a mare like Ethereal would be an ideal mate for Zabeel, champion staying mare and a champion staying sire

and you just might get a champion 4000m horse with very limited race opportunities in Australia. Joe Talor of taylor made farms always said " aim for a mile with your breeding because if you get it wrong you still have a raceable product"

Zabeel was an oustanding miler.

Ethereal was a highclass racemare.

You have more chance of getting a 4000m plodder from breeding 2 1200m maiden class gallopers.

Well shiner if you split the genes and try to put speed into a stayers pedigree you usually get a horse who can't stay but is too slow to win at sprint distances either, better to strengthen the good genes than try to take pot luck and mix them up,
Kinda like cutting a holden and ford in halves and joining them together ie the front of a holden and the back of a Ford or vice versa you will not have the best of both it is a lot more likely to inherit the worst characteristics of both and finish up with something to slow to be any good for anything
Bloody silly Gerry Harvey must have sent twenty or more Danehill mares to Zabeel and none of them can stay, and not fast enough to win over sprint distances either, they are restricted to 1800/1900 as their min/max distance the best are Landlocked and Zagrub another is Slacksmith
If you are going to send a sprint mare to a sire like Zabeel best it have weak genes so Zabeel's genes can dominate the union

I remember peruzzi was a speed machine, and don eduano has a pretty good sprinter so anything can happen

However in the end I agree it's best to breed like to like.

Zabeel has had quite a few who couldn't stay, I am no breeding buff and don't pretend to be, it's just observation, Peruzzi was overall quite disappointing she never lived up to her promise, they thought when she was a good sprinter because she was by Zabeel that she would be even better over ground and she wasn't she was at best a Gr3 sprinter, Don Eduardo won the Derby but from memory it wasn't a vintage Derby and he is the sire of Swift alliance isn't he? not sure of SA's female line but doubt there would be much stamina there and Don Eduardo is no Zabeel!!
....anyway there are exceptions to every rule

don't get me wrong JP, you could get a very good horse but the cross would be dangerous in my opinion. Whatever Zabeel was as a racehorse, the fact is he gets mainly staying types and not many Melbourne cup winning mares have golden slipper winning progeny. You may get a Cox Plate horse or you may get a champion hurdler but then i guess breeding these two you would not be heading for the Blue Diamond.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to buy any of Ethereal's progeny on face value(subject to seeing them) not many Champion mares go on to be champion broodmares and their progeny is usually grossly over valued in the yearling ring anyway, I believe most Champion mares I have seen are too masculine(the very thing that makes them champions on the track) to make good mothers, just if she was mine I would be breeding like to like and there has never been a better sire of stayers than Zabeel,

Is that just a perception Jim, Champion racemares would easily out do their lesser quality mares in the breeding paddocks across the globe.

I think it's mostly perception and hype - people generally expect too much from their champions.  But for every Habibti, there are plenty of Personal Ensign, Dahlia, Tracy's Element....
The problem with Opportunity is that it wears overalls and looks like work.

Even Habibti has done a resonable job hasn't she ?

She was certainly a slow starter but I think she finished with an Italian Derby winner and plenty of quality broodmare daughters ?

Habibti left 2 maiden winners from 10 to race (I've just researched her for a story!) but two of her daughters left stakes winners; one the Italian Derby winner you are thinking of and the other a Gr2 or 3 winner in NZ.
An interesting case, given that her useless half sister was so good at stud.  You'd expect the much better racehorse with the better sire (who turned into a decent broodmare sire) to be the better broodmare.  not the slow hack by the handicapper! :D
Breeding - it's the art that keeps us all guessing...

In the case of Habibti, we should note that her pedigree featured a cross of Sun Princess.  Eight Caat's best progeny featured a similar cross.

It is hard to assess the success of a broodmare when we do not consider the mates that she has had.

I think she would go well with Street Boss.

reasons being: Etheral has:
Swaps - related to Iron Liege
Khaled - Blushing Groom
Turn-To - My Babu
Northern Dance - Halo and Machiavellian
Wilkes - Worden (a bit further back)

but unlikey to go due to not being commercial enough

Hallo,
Regarding Habibti, her Grandson Morshdi (Slip Anchor - Reem Albaraari by Sadlers Wells) won the Derby Italiano, Grosser Preis v. Baden Gr. 1 (Germany) , 2. Irish Derby Gr. 1, 3. Newmarket Stakes

He was purchased for the German Stud Friedrichsruh, unfortunately he turned out as infertile. He was gelded and was later sent to Dubai, returning back to racing, according my informations

Regards from Germany,
Ticino

Her son IMPERIUM is 2nd favourite for the 3200m NZ Cup today.

ETHEREAL herself turned 20 on Thursday, she was foaled 16th Nov 1997.

Would nice to see one of her offspring win a black type race, particularly one over 3200m
