Have decided to start a thread about elephants for those here who take an interest in the work being done to protect them from poaching. Elephants are one of my passions and seeing them killed for ivory really makes me angry. Every so often I will add to the thread with good and bad stories.

I occasionally took interest in elephants back in my younger days.
Specifically, around 3am on a Saturday night at the kebab shop.

I aim to keep posting when I receive info and vids. Just so those interested can see what work goes on with the elephants. I sponsor an Ele at Voi Reintegration Unit. Started when she was a baby and she is now back with the wild herds, and hoping for a baby. Those raised at Voi never fail to bring their babies back to show their human family. |

Much like last month, May spoiled us with grandbabies born to our ex-orphans. The first little miracle arrived on the first of the month, when Sunyei — an elephant we have known for more than two decades — brought the latest addition to our extended family. Not 24 hours later, first-time mum Makireti proudly debuted her brand new son. This will be a year to remember, with so many babies already born and many more on the way. It was also a month of new beginnings, as our Nursery big girls — Sileita, Sholumai, and Mushuru — graduated to our Voi Reintegration Unit, where they will continue their journey back to the wild. The move went well and the trio are enjoying Tsavo life, supported by their Nursery Keeper, Geoffrey, who will remain with them until they’re fully settled. Also in Voi, mini matriarch Mbegu finally felt compelled to answer the call of the wild. She has long been an anchor of our dependent herd, showing remarkable devotion to all the younger orphans. The fact that she has started exploring her independence shows just how strong an elephant’s wild instincts are. We rescued Mbegu 11 years ago, when she was a tiny calf sheltering in a classroom, so this next step is incredibly poignant for us. In case you missed it, we also shared the remarkable treatment-turned-rescue of Chapeyu, a seven-year-old elephant who suffered a terrible spear wound and would not have been able to recover in the wild. It has been a Herculean effort to save him over these past four months, but we are happy with his progress. Incredibly, despite the cruelty Chapeyu experienced at the hands of humans, he has learned to trust his new SWT family. |

Not the same story, Horlicks, but just as good. Thank You. The one I was trying for was from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and it had some pics of the tiny orphans they are hand raising, and their resident blind boy. But thats a very good story and thank you for doing that.

the one thing I do like about the internet is when people animals acting almost human, why do we treat them with so much disdain ? its a curse on a mankind it really is.
I've seen people make friends with octopus, bears, sharks, one guy even made friends with a spider f fs. If we all, every single one of us, had been taught better from birth from day one we might have given the natural some better hope than where we stand now. I mean we come from the same star dust as everything else, yet we refuse to understand and take great care of the world we stand on. Carl

We donate to the Ethical Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Phuket.
We've visit them when we go. Going in March actually. They are all rescue elephants. Tourists get to feed them and wash them. There is one girl there who was rescued from a circus. She's a dancer. She dances the whole time even when you are feeding & washing her. She just swings from side to side and cannot stop. They have tried to train it out of her but no luck. They gave up. It's quite sad actually. Hard to tell if she is happy or not.
