Strong Aussie noms at Dubai World Cup meet

Australia is well represented at the nomination stage for the world's richest race meeting in Dubai.

Eighteen horses, including nine Group One winners, have been entered across four Group One races and one at Group Two level.

The biggest entry is 11 for the Al Quoz Sprint over the straight 1200m which has twice been won by Australian horses - Ortensia in 2012 and Buffering in 2016.

Group One winners entered for the race include Brave Smash, Santa Ana Lane, Viddora and Voodoo Lad while Illustrious Lad, who finished fifth to Jungle Cat last year, has again been nominated.

There are five Group One winners of the seven nominated for the Dubai Turf over 1800m with the Darren Weir-trained Land Of Plenty entered for both the Dubai Turf and the Al Quoz Sprint.

Faatinah, a two-time winner in Dubai for Lindsay Park including victory at Meydan earlier this month, has been entered for both the Dubai Golden Shaheen, over 1200m on dirt, and the Al Quoz Sprint, while the Chris Waller-trained Libran is also a dual nomination for the Dubai Sheema Classic (2400m) and the Group Two Dubai Gold Cup (3200m).

Muntazah..outstanding win.. broke the course record (1600m) at Meydan and ran a time of 1:35.00...what was the winning margin...at least 12 lengths?
Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

Brudder you do know that Thunder Snow is bred in Ireland don't you?  Just like here in Australia he is probably bred to go on turf.  That he has won on dirt is a bonus but doesn't mean it's be best surface for him.

Hi furious.

His owner is obviously more interested that his reigning Dubai World Cup champion repeats in 3 weeks time. It is one of the richest races in the world and it is in the Sheikh's home ground.

However, I am well aware that his turf credentials are quite formidable, winning the GI Criterium in France as a 2YO and the GI Prix Jean Prat as 3YO as well as 2nd placing in the GI Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh.

One of the Sheikh's main goals is to capture a US Classic event, in particular the Kentucky Derby.

While TBV's focus is on the Australian contingency that will be racing at Dubai it also nice to check on how OZ sires prodigy perform on the world stage. I'm sure you know that about that connection with Thunder Snow.

Cheers.

I'm hoping Brave Smash can run well. I believe his 3rd placing in the Newmarket Hcp is good form to win well in the Al Quoz Sprint

Todd Pletcher trained Coal Front won his 3rd straight this year in the G2 Godolphin Mile (Dirt).
He won at Oaklawn Park in the G3 Razorback Handicap and before that G3 Mr Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

US horses Plus Que Parfait and Gray Magician are one and two in the UAE Derby. You go to credit the trainers and connections who took them to Dubai because they had very little points in in KDerby qualification standings and now these two will get a start with what they have earned.
The Japanese horse Derma Louvre finished fourth and may need to go through the Japan path to get a start.

Almond Eye super impressive winning the turf classic. Bit the front fairly early in the straight with a great turn of foot. Held on strongly right to the line.

Great news for Australian sires with the quinella. The Darley decision to reverse shuttle Lonhro was 5 cm away from a gloriously brave outcome.

The fact that both sires get turf and dirt horses should be a reason to entice Australian breeders to send their stallions shuttling.

And for spectacle I thought the race was the best race I've seen so far this year

Kudos to Thunder Snow. I can't think of too many horses that are G1 winners at 2, 3, 4 & 5 across turf and dirt. That sort of record makes him better than 99.9% of others.

Such amazing versatility at this level. A very rare horse.

Why can't we get winners going by Helmet?  Are they too hot under the collar or don't they suit Australian conditions.  This one seems versatile enough.

Watched the full replay today. First time I've seen more than youtube clips etc. Wow what an event. I had some wins yesterday so put $100 on Cross Counter and Almond Eye double before I went to bed. Nice way to start the day!

They all seemed to really like Cross Counter. Good to see the Cup winner going from strength to strength.

I know next to nothing about overseas racing but that's pretty amazing. The crowd went nuts when he won!

He was a bit mad early, remember he bucked and carried on taking no part in the Kentucky Derby, but they obviously sorted him out subsequently

Well Verry Elleegant is all over the place sometimes also.  Still wins G1's.  Why haven't we had a really good Helmet here.  Sepoy has a couple going well.  Maybe La Tene will step up.  After all another son of Exceed and Excel got the slipper winner but this boy was his best son.  And they are nice types - just frustrating.

Track record in the 2021 G2 Dubai Gold Cup (3200m) - 3:17.45 by Subjectivist, previous record was 3:17.92 (held by Vazirabad - 2018). Vazirabad won this race in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Vazirabad's peak Timeform rating was 123. Also it would be nice if more Dubai Gold Cup horses could be aimed at the Melbourne Cup or Melbourne Cup runners aimed at Dubai Gold Cup. Both races are 3200m, one is WFA, the other is a handicap. Cross Counter the only horse to win both races - Melbourne Cup into Dubai Gold Cup

That is terribly sad. Zenden has just scored an easy win in the G1 Golden Shaheen over 6 furlongs but snapped a front leg 100m later. Triumph turned to tragedy.

Lord North (5g  Dubawi - Najoum, by Giant's Causeway) wins the G1 Dubai Turf brilliantly. He will be a big chance in all the major ten furlong races this year.

Mishriff  (4h  Make Believe - Contradict, by Raven's Pass) has just won the G1 Sheema Classic to follow his recent victory in the Saudi Cup.

The second horse was very unlucky. The Japanese mare Chrono Genesis was impeded the entire length of the straight by the other Japanese mare Loves Only You. I'm sure that she would have won with a clear run as the margin was only about a neck.

The favourite has won the Dubai World Cup. Mystic Guide (4h  Ghostzapper - Music Note, by A.P. Indy) settled 3rd, took the lead at the top of the home straight & raced away to win easily. He is owned by Godolphin, trained by Michael Stidham & ridden by Luis Saez. The field was a bit below the normal standard but the winner is a lightly raced horse who should be competitive throughout the year. His dam was a triple Grade 1 winner from an excellent damline. The 3rd dam was co-champion 2yo filly in 1978. Thunder Snow is from the same damline.
