Vale Jimmy ChouxOne of the cult heroes of New Zealand racing has passed away with news coming through that former Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) winner and successful stallion Jimmy Choux was humanely euthanised earlier in the week. The multiple G1 winner was the standout story of racing in New Zealand during the 2011 calendar year where he captured four G1 titles and went within a length of a fifth when finishing runner-up to Pinker Pinker in the G1 Cox Plate (2040m) of that year. His accomplishments for owners and breeders Richard and Liz Wood put fledgling trainer John Bary and former jumps jockey turned flat rider Jonathan Riddell on the map, with Bary quick to pay tribute to his mate and stable star. “We got the news from his home at Rosalee Park Stud in Western Australia on Tuesday that he had to be humanely euthanised as he was suffering from nose cancer,” Bary said. “It certainly brought back some very special memories as he was such a lovely horse, a great character and he put a novice trainer and battling former jumps jockey on the map. “The support he had from the general public was quite amazing as they really seemed to take him to heart, and he returned that affection by trying his heart out every time we lined him up. “He wasn’t a natural talent, but he had a big heart and big brain which meant he did things that a lot of horses couldn’t do. It would be great to have a few more like him in the stable.” Bary nominated his 2011 New Zealand Derby win as one of his fondest memories and was philosophical about the lowlight which was the narrow defeat in the Cox Plate later that year. “He gave me my first stakes victory when he won the Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Trentham (G2, 1200m) and then in his three-year-old season he won the Derby which was worth $2.2million at the time, which was just enormous for us all. “He went close to becoming the first horse to complete the Triple Crown at Hastings as he finished runner-up in the Makfi Challenge Stakes (G1, 1400m) before winning the next two legs,” he said. “We took him to Australia for the Cox Plate and he went so close to winning that day. “Jonathan rode a ten out of ten race that day and we got beaten by an eleven out of eleven effort by Craig Williams on Pinker Pinker.” Following his successful racetrack career Jimmy Choux found his way to Rich Hill Stud at Walton in the Waikato where he produced Group 1 winners The Bostonian and Two Illicit amongst his five individual stakes winners. “Jimmy was with us for eight seasons after his racetrack career,” Rich Hill principal John Thompson said. “He was an easy horse to promote as he had such a following and he left some very nice horses without quite reaching the heights we wanted him to. “He had The Bostonian and Two Illicit but was probably a very good bread and butter stallion and it is sad to hear about his demise as he was a lovely horse to have around the farm. “The breeders here didn’t want to support him in the end, but he found a lovely home in West Australia.” Jimmy Choux won twelve of his 26 starts and more than $3.6million during his career on the track and produced 141 individual winners from his time at stud. - LOVERACING.NZ News Desk |

Read something earlier on one of the racing groups. I think he went in for colic surgery and was PTS during the op.
Oaklands are understandably devastated.

Was never going to get early comers however in 2023 and 2024 alone had winners of 13 stakes races at distances between 1200 and 2400m.
Did marvelously in his short time at stud and will certainly be missed.

Loved SA stallion dies One of South Australia's best-performing stallions, Valentia, died last Friday, Adelaide Plains Bloodstock has confirmed. The Stakes-winning son of Fastnet Rock had just embarked on his ninth season at stud in SA, having recently moved from the famed Cornerstone Stud in the Barossa. From fewer than 200 live foals, Valentia has sired prolific winners including Smokin' Val, Exalted Fire, Validated, Starlite Valley, Jacks On Ice and Anilla. In a statement on social media, Adelaide Plains Bloodstock said its team was devastated by the stallion's death. "It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Valenta, who suffered a fatal hemorrhage this (Friday) morning," the statement said. "We are beyond shocked and devastated at his untimely passing and know his wonderful temperament and nature will live on in his foals to come." |

Champion racehorse and Lane's End Farm stalwart stallion Lemon Drop Kid has passed away at the age of 28. Lemon Drop Kid was exceptionally well bred. He was sired by Kingmambo out of the Seattle Slew mare Charming Lassie. Charming Lassie is a half-sister to Weekend Surprise, the dam of the great A.P. Indy. He used that pedigree to win 10 of his 24 career starts, including the Futurity (G1), Belmont Stakes (G1), Travers Stakes (G1), Brooklyn Handicap (G2), Suburban Handicap (G2), Whitney Handicap (G1), and Woodward Stakes (G1). He performed so well during his four-year-old season in 2000 that he was named Champion Older Horse. Lemon Drop Kid returned to his birthplace of Lane's End Farm at the conclusion of his racing career to stand stud. There he sired a total of 52 graded stakes winners including the likes of Lemon Pop, Lemons Forever, and Richard's Kid. He also excelled as a broodmare sire; his daughters have produced 36 graded stakes winners and nine champions to date. His Kentucky Oaks winning daughter Lemons Forever is known for producing champion Forever Unbridled and Grade 1 winner Unbridled Forever. Lemon Drop Kid was pensioned from stud duties in 2021 and lived the last few years of his life being loved, celebrated, and cherished at Lane's End Farm. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him, but there is comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on. |

We were lucky enough to see him when we visited Lanes End back in 2013. Along with Kingmambo and A P Indy. Foaled at Lane’s End and bred by W. S. Farish and W. S. Kilroy, Lemon
Drop Kid was destined for greatness with his royal pedigree and strong
constitution. The son of world-class sire Kingmambo and produced from
Charming Lassie, a half-sister to Broodmare of the Year Weekend
Surprise, Lemon Drop Kid was closely related to the great A.P. Indy, one
of the most influential sires in the Thoroughbred stud book. Lemon Drop Kid was sold as a yearling to Mr. & Mrs. M.J. Dance, Jr. and was raced by Jeanne G. Vance (Mrs. M.J. Dance, Jr.). |

Its good to see he will be buried in his home ground. “Many of us at Lane’s End were here at the farm when Lemon Drop Kid was
foaled in May of 1996,” said Lane’s End Farm president Bill Farish. “We
are profoundly blessed to have been associated with this exceptional
horse for his entire life, watching him develop into a champion
racehorse and then a top sire of over 100 stakes winners. He will be
greatly missed, and we will forever honor his legacy.”
Lemon Drop Kid will be buried in the stallion cemetery at the farm. |

Always Dreaming, the winner of the 2017 Kentucky Derby, died from
complications related to colic on Dec. 10 at River Oaks Farm in
Oklahoma, Thoroughbred Daily News reports.
Bloodstock agent Chad Schumer, who brokered the deal to send the 10-year-old son of Bodemeister from WinStar Farm to River Oaks Farm earlier this year, said the horse was sent to the clinic to deal with what he called a "typical" colic, and he was sent back to the farm after a four-day stay without any surgery. Though he appeared to be turning a corner in his recovery, Always Dreaming died on the farm, following what was later discovered to be a burst cecum, a part of the large intestine. |

A most unfortunate, early demise VSP.
Marvelous isn't it, a huge success in the USA but a total flop in Oz with just two stakes winners from 350 live foals. |

28 is more like it. Strange indeed that so many experienced professional studs can’t keep a stallion alive for its natural lifespan?
Has anyone seen or heard of Deep Field? Not sent to a lesser stud, replaced by his son. Where is he?

From TDN:- Promising Young Sire Calyx Dies at NineThe stallion's death was announced by Coolmore as a result of the son of Kingman suffering an acute foot injury earlier this year, with the decision being taken to euthanise him on Wednesday on humane grounds. “It is very unfortunate to lose such a promising young sire,” said Castlehyde Stud's Cathal Murphy. “He was very strongly supported by breeders last year and looked to have an extremely bright future ahead of him.” Juddmonte homebred Calyx won three of his four starts when trained by John Gosden. Kingman's first Retired to Coolmore Stud in 2020, Calyx is the sire of six stakes winners, including the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte scorer Classic Flower and G2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes heroine Persian Dreamer from his first crop of juveniles in 2023. Purple Lily also featured among 23 individual winners in Europe from Calyx's first two-year-olds, before going on to finish third in last year's Irish Oaks. |
