Sam Kavanagh is realistic when he discusses recent purchase Dashing Willoughby.

And despite the hype surrounding Dashing Willoughby when he arrived ahead of the 2020 Melbourne Cup, the horse just hasn't been able to hit the lofty heights expected of him.

It led to the lightly raced son of Nathaniel being offered for sale on Inglis Digital, where he was purchased for $60,000 by Kavanagh on Wednesday.

"He is a highly credentialled European. His form has gone south in Australia, we understand that," Kavanagh said.

"We are not buying him expecting him to be a Melbourne Cup horse.

"We know he's a rocks or diamonds situation. If we have any luck with him, amazing. But it's a 60-grand throw at the stumps to have a good horse."

Kavanagh said he is keeping his options open with Dashing Willoughby.

"I really enjoy training European horses. We've had good success with them," he said.

"If he could end up running in the Newcastle Cup, or a Gosford Cup in the autumn (that would be ideal).

"If we can win one metropolitan race, then the owners are going to get more than a thrill."

Certainly is a head scratcher that a horse can beat Spanish Mission and Cross Counter in a G2 and get beaten 27 lengths 2 runs later in our Caulfield Cup , ran disgraceful in the MC also , then went to Waller who couldn't get him going , question Smile did he pick up a bug on the plane trip over ? are his lungs RS ? or did they leave the recipe at home for themselves ? LOL

In his sale write up it said "He has struggled to return to form this season with several niggling issues requiring management. Please see attached vet report."

VETERINARY CLINICAL HISTORY

Re: Dashing Willoughby To Whom It May Concern:

The horse 6yo bay thoroughbred gelding “Dashing Willoughby” had been under the care of Centennial Park Veterinary Practice whilst in training with Chris Waller at Rosehill Racecourse, Rosehill, NSW from June 2021 to October 2021. During that time of the gelding was subject to routine racehorse management, along with examination for right front fetlock effusion on the 23rd September 2021. There was no lameness noted, but the horse had mild effusion of the right fore fetlock and pain on flexion. There were no significant radiographic findings, and the horse was subsequently medicated with intra-articular triamcinolone and hyonate. The effusion and pain on flexion resolved fully.

On the 2nd October 2021 “Dashing Willoughby” was examined post-race. An endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tract revealed normal grade 1 (Lane) laryngeal movements, with blood present in the trachea (grade 2 out of 4 Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage). The horse trotted with no lameness detected, with no joint effusions or pain on flexion, and he had recovered normally post-race with no evidence of any cardiac arrythmia or irregularity.

The horse is currently spelling Yours faithfully,

Dr Ross Alexander BVSc

Always was, always will be

Another sucker with more money than sense & yet another potential catastrophic breakdown. Hopefully the horse has a better sense of self preservation than many. 20yo chronically damaged retirees can trot up sound Unhappy
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything, it's too late to stop reading it.

A tragedy in waiting, never mind Kavanagh will find something to cheer the horse up, he's got a track record, it seems Gerry is one of the select few oblivious to it.

No it doesn't djebel, they're simply calling it as they see it.  And Gay of course being something of an expert on unsoundness.

Jeez I just about would've thrown in 10k for a share seems like a bargain if he can get anything close to his UK form. Maybe he just needs some TLC.

Grading scales for exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). A: Grade 1, B: Grade 2, C: Grade 3, D: Grade 4, according to Hinchcliff et al. 20 : Grade 1 = 1 or more flecks of blood or 2 or fewer short, narrow streams of blood in the trachea or mainstem bronchi visible from the tracheal bifurcation; Grade 2 = 1 long stream of blood or more than 2 short streams of blood occupying less than a third of the tracheal circumference; Grade 3 = multiple, distinct streams of blood covering more than a third of the tracheal circumference, with no blood pooling at the thoracic inlet; Grade 4 = multiple, coalescing streams of blood covering more than 90% of the tracheal surface, with blood pooling at the thoracic inlet.
