This guy has been in my radar since his 3yo days back in NZ with Murray Baker.  I think Murray had a pretty high opinion of him so was probably disappointed to see the owners sell to OTI and see him race in Australia.

I know its only summer racing but always exciting to see a promising stayer working through the grades & this guy has now won 4 on end - including 3 city races.

Sounds like the G3 Hobart Cup 2400m in 3 weeks time is his next assignment.

Must have been a pretty hot offer for Murray to sell. Looking like a shrewd investment right now.

Phillip Stokes was thinking of some interstate staying features for his best stayers after his former Kiwi galloper Daiqiansweet Junior made it four wins on end at The Valley on Saturday.

After the gelded son of Sweet Orange lunged to narrowly nose out In A Twinkling over 2500 metres, Stokes said Tasmanian staying features, starting with the $250,000 G3 Ladbrokes Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 13, was next for the still-improving four-year-old.

Stokes confirmed also that his fourth-placegetter Good Idea was on the path to defend his G2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) victory of last year.

Daqiansweet Junior ($2.45 favourite) looked to have the race in his keeping as Jamie Kah took him to the outside of In A Twinkling ($7) as they turned for home but had to pull out all stops to secure a narrow victory with Starcaster ($5.50) three and a half lengths away in third.

"He knows where the post is and Jamie rode him beautifully," Stokes said after the race.

"Full credit to the team at Pakenham, theyve done a fantastic job with him, he gets a gallop on the good surface at Pakenham and then does all his training at the farm.

"Hes strong and the tempo suited and he gets his ticket to Tasmania (Hobart Cup). I havent had a runner there so Ill need to do a bit of research but Ill work that out."

Kah said: "Hes a typical stayer. He conserved his energy on this hot day and gave me a lovely ride.

"The race shaped out well for him but I still think I probably got to the front a bit too soon. If I had it over again Id probably wait another couple of metres on him.

"It was still a really good win but now Ive learned a bit more about him Id probably ride him a bit differently."

Good Idea ($4.80) finished fourth, some seven lengths from the winner, but Stokes said the firm track was against him.

"The track is riding a little bit firm and it wasnt run to suit," he said. "They backed off down the side but his goal is the Adelaide Cup so well get him ready for that."

Wondered why he was missing from the Hobart Cup yesterday.  That said, he’d have needed to go up another level to have beaten Ho Ho Khan.

But he’s nominated for the Torney Night Cup at MV on Friday over 2500m (Listed).

Stuck to his task ok last night running 2nd, but certainly no match for a tough old stayer in Skelm.

Do you press onto an Adelaide Cup with DSJ off the back of last nights run?

He’s already come a long way in this current 7 start prep that started back in Oct, I’d be tempted to put him away and return as 5yo next season.

Jeez Kah has made him work hard his last two starts. Set him another herculean task last night. Off to the paddock me thinks.

Just guessing.

He's by Sweet Orange, and am led to understand a daqian (place in China) sweet is a small yellowish/orange fruit which may or may not be similar in taste to an orange.  Then again I might well be misinformed.  Embarrassed

And as for junior....??

He's been up longer than Shane Warne's best friend, however if they can keep him going he's thrown into the Sydney Cup.

One thing about this race Shawy.

We saw in the Doncaster how the horses who had been racing on dry tracks in Melbourne dominated.

And even in the derby where Hitotsu and Alegron came from Melbourne.

The horses coming up from Victoria have been able to be trained better and raced better on the drier tracks so these two, on that issue alone have to be chances.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

Interesting Kah jumps off it was a great win in the Adelaide Cup. Huge odds $21 ATM. Crystal Pegasus must be flying.

Absolute slaughter job from McEvoy. I'm still struggling to understand how it's actually run home for third.

Mate just jumped with no plan, was just hoping for a flukey gap to appear. Then made no effort to change anything. Only horse planted three deep no cover the trip and only horse that ran on all day and gets third. It was a slaughter of epic proportions.

FWIW just because the market had it $27 means sweet FA to me. It was weighted to win and it's win in Adelaide was enormous. Kah jumped ship wish she had have stayed on. Cry

In support of PMD he settled far too back, as distinct from his usual pattern of racing, and against the earlier but apparent leader bias.

ps they've got the night lights on to find the two other fancied horses (Crystal Pegasus and Stockman) who also settled back with him and were both beaten more than 13 lengths.

Thank you SC. Anyone wants to dispute my opinion take a good look at the ride first. A jockey of McEvoy's rep has to be doing more than that in a big Cup.

Just on the other two mentioned, both were also extraordinarily terrible rides, for both faves to get back to last and second last in such an enormous field on a bog track where nothing was making ground.....you'd swear it was a boat race if it wasn't for so much money, such was the incompetence of Alicia Collett and Jamie Kah. If you take a look, both jockeys were yet to take off at the 800m by which time the race was already over for them anyway. Just terrible terrible judgment. (Cant blame that on my kick Afros).

Despite Duais doing zero in the Queen Elizabeth they pulled the right reign going there. She'd have had a hard slog in this for nothing.

Friendless in Cup betting today at 66/1 but just rewatched a replay and he was finishing really determinately for a brave 6th placing.

He’s a really solid 3200m horse.

Maybe the Sandown Cup in a few weeks time, but if not a repeat tilt at the Adelaide & Sydney Cups should be on his agenda for 2023.

But well done today Clap

That would have to be the best result (6th) in a Melbourne Cup for an Adelaide Cup winner in how long? He ran well today.
