Been a really good trainer for so many decades. He & wife Jean have scaled down their operation over the last decade but back in the 80’s & 90’s he’d regularly have plenty of metrop winners in Melb each year.

We actually get to see Bruce’s stable colours (yellow with purple Maltese cross) going around today at Caulfield in Race 6 - he’s got No New Tricks in the 3yo 2000m race.

Wishing Bruce a full recovery.

date on the condition of fellow horseman Bruce Purcell.

Griffiths, president of the Australian Trainers' Association, told RSN on Monday morning that Purcell remains in a critical but stable condition in Melbourne's Alfred Hospital.

Purcell suffered serious head injuries when kicked by a horse when unloading it from a float at the Cranbourne Training Complex on Friday. The 76-year-old was also dragged for a distance in the traumatic incident.

“Jean Purcell (Bruce's wife) has been kind enough to text me daily so we can keep everyone updated," Griffiths said.

“He obviously got dragged at the time of the incident and as a result of that he’s got multiple fractures around his head, face and ribs.

“There was bleeding on the brain and all sorts of things like that.”

As a result of the injuries, Purcell was placed in an induced coma but Griffiths did suggest there had been some positive signs over the weekend.

“There has been some positive signs that when they’ve reduced the sedation to see how his sensitivity to pain is, he’s responded," Griffiths said.

“We’re all taking that as a positive, it’s a good thing, but they’re keeping him in an induced coma quite a lot to make sure his body has a chance to rest and get some peace so that he can recover.

“It’s a long road ahead and he’s still in a critical condition, but he’s pretty tough Bruce.”

A trainer of more than 50 years, Purcell is a stalwart of the Cranbourne training ranks.

“If you Google the Cranbourne training ranks, there’s a photo of Bruce there," he said.

“He’s has been such a big part of the Cranbourne training community for such a long time and you’re just used to seeing him at the track every day. Training is what he does, it’s what he loves.

“It’s very sad and worrying to see him in this situation and there’s a lot of support for ready for Jean when she needs it.”

WorkSafe Victoria are continuing their investigations into the incident.

Doctors have removed Bruce Purcell's breathing tube as the injured trainer's condition continues to improve after a life-threatening accident at Cranbourne earlier this month.

Purcell was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition on 12th July after a freak incident involving one of his horses.

While he remains in intensive care with swelling on the brain and multiple fractures to the body and face, the 76-year-old is taking small steps towards recovery.

"Bruce has had his breathing tube removed and is trying to talk," a spokesperson from the Purcell family said.

"It's a huge relief.

"He has a long way to go but he is doing a great job.

"We'd like to thank everyone for the ongoing love and support."

Long awaited update on Bruce Purcell
Today he took a huge step by being taken off all medications other than pain relief and was shifted from the Alfred Hospital to Caulfield Rehabilitation ABI specialist.

Seriously I am walking on air to think that Bruce has come this far in just under 4 weeks!

We still haven’t any prognosis, but at least we are breathing!

Jean:
Bruce gave us a fright last week and was put back into ICU with Sepsis, back into the ward this week and now, yet again, waiting to be moved back to Caulfield Rehab. So besides the troughs, he is moving forward!

Saw on English TV recently that all vital organ functions are fed into a computer for this express purpose ( when in ICU) of detecting Sepsis the moment it appears , an alarm goes off and bang straight on to it, brilliant, kick a goal Bruce and get well soon.

Purcell records first winner since injury

Kate Watts

Trainer Bruce Purcell has recorded his first winner since he was seriously injured in a trackwork incident in July.

The Cranbourne horseman is still recovering and wasn't on course at Sale to see gelding Extending's victory on Thursday.

But trainer Ray Besanko, who has taken over care of the horse in the meantime, said the 76-year-old was on the mend after a very difficult few months.

"He's really well, he's walking and he's talking and doing everything and he's just improved in leaps and bounds in the past couple of weeks," Besanko said.

"I'm just happy that he's won for Bruce."

Purcell had to be placed in an induced coma following the incident on July 15, having broken multiple bones in his head and body after tangling with one of his horses in the early hours of trackwork.

WATCH: Hear from Besanko

"I'm just happy he's won for Bruce."

We hope you're watching Bruce, Extending certainly dug deep for you today.

2 winners in a week for Bruce & Jean.

Our Echelon at Kilmore on Thurs & now Unconquered Sun at Kyneton today.

Great effort for a stable that must only have a handful of horses in work Clap

One of the nicest men we ever met in the industry as a breeder. Genuinely spoke to you as a person not just a vendor & loved a yarn at the end of the day

Purcell's big win days after cardiac arrest

There is nothing to lift the spirits like a 200/1 winner and if anybody needed a lift this week it was Elfi’s co-trainer Bruce Purcell.

Just seven days earlier, the veteran Cranbourne trainer suffered a heart attack only to be revived by his stepdaughter Emma Astbury.

“Bruce, my stepfather, actually had a cardiac arrest and had seizures on Thursday night last week,” Astbury explained post-race after the emotional win.

“I was lucky enough to get a phone call from Mum and I was able to revive him.

“He is at home on the couch with his blanket and he is watching.”

In 2019, Purcell a trainer of more than 50 years, suffered serious head injuries and was placed in an induced coma after being kicked by a horse.

The Purcell’s Fiorente filly had finished last in her first two race starts and beaten a combined margin of 34-lengths in those outings, trading at as much as $617 on the betting exchange.

Stepping up to 1600 metres for the first time, stable apprentice Lewis German sounded as surprised as most punters when the mare ran past rivals from the second half of the field to land the knock-out victory.

“I didn’t really expect her to win the race, I just thought I’d be happy if she puts herself in the race and is competitive and we can go to 2000 metres next race,” German admitted.

“I am really happy for the Purcell family and that ones for Bruce.”

Bruce and Jean Purcell have seven horses listed in training at Cranbourne with Unconquered Sun their most recent winner last December.

Elfi is raced by her breeders the Eddy family.
