If you parcelled out the total prizemoney in Irish racing equally between all race entries you get a figure of about Euro 1,000 prizemoney for each race contestant.
Race earnings average about Euro 7,000 a horse a year in Ireland.
HRI (Horse Racing Ireland) published a report that stated owners lose about 75%.
First you buy a mare, pay stallion fees and breed a horse.
Or you buy a horse at auction.
Then you pay for pre-training, and then training fees.

HRI publish new owner statistics each year.  They never publish owners lost statistics.
Why are people at the top of the Irish racing surprised that owners can not afford to race, breeders can not sell ordinary horses to impovrished owners, and the outcome is horses failing to attract one bid at auction, or bought back by the vendor after failing to meet modest reserves?

To counter the appalling prizemoney HRI arranged to pay Euro 120 to horses who finish sixth in a race.
My guess is the only reason for this miserable amount is it allows HRI to say that over 70% of horses in racing earn money.

I live in Co Tipperary, Ireland, a major breeding and training area.  I have two 2-y-os in training, probably running their first races in the next weeks.  But they are not in training in Ireland.

A rethink is needed by the good and the great.
