This is not going to end well for him.
Even from the evidence heard thus far supporting him, he is a hot mess. And we’ve yet to hear from the 21 liars who are apparently going to perjure themselves, because they either don’t like him, or are jealous…..

War is the most destructive and pitiless of all human activities. And yet the experience of war has a profound and strangely compelling effect on those who fight. Combat kills, maims, and terrifies, but it can also reveal the power of brotherhood and a selfless sense of purpose. It’s an experience that changes soldiers, and those changes last a lifetime.
Most who join the military and go to war are young , of tender years —and many have never been away from home. They have little experience of the world, let alone war, death, and killing. For them, and for all soldiers, combat is a complex mix of emotions that define the experience of war and shape the experience of coming home. More recent the added horrors of no front line and difficulties identifying which of those you are among are the actual enemy. Crazed , emotionally Manic and borderline psychotic from the pressures at hand. Soldiers really are meant to be killing machines in the expected circumstances . Don't judge anyone for doing what they are in fact trained to do , expected to do and decorated for doing it well. I think it is apalling to see comments That are not in total support for men like Ben Roberts Smith , before all circumstances are heard . Shame on you. |

How can any of us judge, never having been in a war situation like he was ??? Like to see how you guys could handle things if you were in that place and time. Sit back and blame. Have any here been there done that ?? Its only now this sort of thing can be brought out. Anyone have any idea what happened in the wars , before social media hit the scenes ??

Spot on AA.. Australia is still cleaning up areas That were part of our chemical Readiness to meet an invasion in ww2.
I believe a site north, near Townsvile was the most recent attended. ( Australia conducted extensive chemical weapons research during WW2 as part of ... Bulk mustard gas and phosgene was supplied by Britain in 1941 (possibly also ... Other CW storage locations were at Hume Camp, near Albury, Victoria, and a site ... and drums of mustard gas were found in the jungle as recently as 1990 ) Do people think it is only the enemy who execute prisoners , civilians etc. These Middle East conflicts have been emotionally destructive to our Soldiers as the nerves were tested 24/7 for the reason there were regular unexpected losses at the hands of the very people they were training . |

Total support for someone who cheats on their wife and allegedly beats the gelati out of their mistress? Well it’s obvious why some people end up with multiple failed marriages. I’ll leave the war crime allegations for others to comment on.

IN HIS DEFENCE, he tells us that his parents gave him a fine upbringing and taught him about values.
Nek minute,he’s admitting to hiring a private detective to monitor her visit to a hospital to have an abortion. Just like all the well brought up boys do……. There’s plenty more like this going to pop up. He’s going to trash his own reputation, regardless of the verdict.

I don’t think anyone disputes that war can have a devastating impact to the mind in a lot of cases but that doesn’t give someone carte blanche to do whatever they want without consequences. You don’t get a free ride because you served in the military. The allegations against him are serious and the fact that channel 9 are using a truth defence would suggest some at least are true.

Its certainly not looking very good for him, and if the bashing turns out to be true, he has lost me. But I dont think judging what happens in a field of war on the same grounds as a non war setting should be done the same way. War changes people. Mostly for the worse. I remember blokes coming home from Vietnam. Very sad.

I am referring to the allegations of domestic violence . How do you know it was murder in Afghanistan ? Where you there ? People usually die in wars.

Thirty-nine Afghan prisoners, farmers, adolescents and civilians allegedly murdered. Eleven other incidents are being investigated... Paul Brereton's report eviscerates this argument in one short sentence: "None of these are incidents of disputable decisions made under pressure in the heat of battle."

I see his legal team have dropped a huge bundle of documents to the defence, just 2 days before cross examination.
They seem to think they should have received these documents from BRS over a year ago. …..nothing to hide…..

A very good late friend of mine, who served in WW2 in the Middle East ( Palestine at that time ) told me on his return to Australia, after the war, he never joined the RSL or wanted to talked much about his time fighting. He wanted to forget all about what he has seen and what went on, so he became an SP bookie.
Unless one has fought in a war zone I do not think one can appreciate how mentally destructive fighting in a war can be on different individuals.

There’s something to that Bob.
In this instance, it would appear that this guys behaviour since he got home, paints a poor picture. In trying to clear his name over what happened over there, his behaviour and attitudes to people since he got home will be under the spotlight. It seems to me, from the tidbits we know thus far. he should be desperate for people not to know who he is now. That’s not going to happen. Looking like a huge own goal.

Well, I would think anyone who was over there in Afganistan, would have PTSD. I have a young second cousin who did 3 trips there, with the army, and he is a complete loonie. No one who went there comes home sane. |

Owens said Roberts-Smith had consistently and deliberately sought to manipulate evidence and fabricate reports about what happened on the battlefield. The court heard he had “arranged for the purchase” of four burner phones so he could communicate secretly with former comrades. Roberts-Smith also allegedly arranged for the posting of threatening letters to a fellow SAS soldier warning him to recant his evidence to the inspector general of the Australian defence force, who was investigating allegations of war crimes. Owens said the newspapers would call 21 current and former SAS soldiers to give evidence about what they saw and did in Afghanistan. “Suggestions that the testimony of 21 men is a fabrication, the product of jealousy or the product of trauma, is inherently implausible,” he said. “Some of these witnesses were involved in crimes themselves. Is it really to be supposed that a man, himself, would confess to murder just so as to give vent to some jealousy over a medal?” |

Has Ben got any friends in the SAS who are backing his side of the story? 21 sounds like a lot of enemies, on your own side, to me.

Enemies or witnesses who dont agree that committing war crimes to record a ''kill'' by executing civilians is acceptable?

That’s 21 that feel strongly enough to drop everything and come from all over, to give evidence. How many are testifying on his behalf?

Opposing war crimes is not a left/right thing oneone...or at least it shouldn't be.
I would have thought that pretty obvious.
