Does anyone here have any personal experience with this ?  I have read up all the information, causes, treatment , etc.  But just wondering if any here have had it, or family with it, and can give some personal insight into it.
My OH went from normal to what I thought was a stroke coming on, in the space of an hour, on Tuesday night, so we have been thru all the hospital/medical stuff .  Scared the hell out of me, but he seems perfectly fit and pain free except for his face looking like a basset hound on one side, and his eye is not good at all.
Any insight at all  ???

I had it severely for five years, between 2010 and 2015, after a dental procedure did nerve damage. It could only be controlled by prednisone....which is how I began using that drug.

It still surfaces on occasion, though not anywhere near as severe as when it started....and I simply take a week or two of a low dose of prednisone and it settles.

Prednisone is the only drug which controls it.

The majority of people with Bell's palsy, around 90 per cent, will recover completely with time, although the paralysis may last for up to one year in severe cases. However, the remaining 10 per cent will experience some degree of permanent paralysis. Older people with pre-existing high blood pressure are at greater risk of this complication.

Treatment options can include:

  • artificial tears to keep the affected eye lubricated
  • a patch to protect the affected eye
  • using tape to close the affected eyelid at night
  • medications such as corticosteroids to help reduce the swelling of the facial nerve
  • pain-relieving medications
  • massage
  • facial exercises
  • botox injections may be useful if, during nerve recovery, unexpected involuntary movements of the face occur

My doctor at the time was anti-prednisone. She hated prescribing it. But the moment it was clear I had Bell's Palsy, she didn't hesitate to give me repeat prescriptions...because she had dealt with the condition with her father.

The prednisone controls the numbness. But he might need to exercise his facial muscles to retrieve a normal appearance.

I was lucky that mine was mostly numbness and my face barely showed any difference, visually.

 Best of luck. Beer

I don't know much  - however a good mate got it when we were at College years ago. Affected his eye & one side of his face. Just sagged down.  Took a good 6 to 12 months to come good....although to this day he still has relapses......esp when tired / run down

A mate of mine had it for a few weeks in his 20s, cause unknown. Pretty sure he had to take steroids and then it resolved. So don't stress.

It can happen to anyone of any age.  A simple sinus infection can trigger it, not just high blood pressure.

It is scary when it happens. The numbness is debilitating.

I've been on and off prednisone for years due to chronic sinusitis. My doctor isn't a fan of it either but it does work.

We saw 3 different Docs over 24 hours from Tuesday night, and they are all of the same opinion its of the same virus family as shingles.  He is on large doses of steroids and anti virals.  And lots of lubricants for his eye, which seems to be the major worry  for him.  The numbness isnt worrying him very much at all even tho his lip looks like he has done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.

LOL, been thru that when I had my eyes done for cataracts.  The first eye was done at short notice on the free list and looked perfect the next day.  2 months later the second one was done at Newcastle Eye Hospital and paid for.  It was black over half my face for 3 weeks.  Of course you know what all the jokes were about.
His eye isnt black.  He just has a fat lip and an eye that wont close. LOL
We are still going to the Ramornie next week.
