The thing that puzzles me about Osaka is how Japanese she is in manner and temperament. Not that I have ever been to Japan but she is the embodiment of my stereotype of a Japanese woman, and she's got a Haitian father and has not lived in Japan since she was 3.

Recently down at the State swimming champs, where due to my involvement at a club I had volunteered (or rather was volunteered) to do some officiating- basically you sit there with one other person at the end of each lane and hit a button when they touch, as back up to the official timer.

Anyway, for some reason there was a large Japanese contingent there. Must’ve been part of their preparation for something or other. So one of their swimmers in my lane (Mizunuma I think his name was), a world ranked swimmer, wins his race. I’m sitting there bored out of my brains with some bloke from Playford Aquatic or wherever waiting for the next race when this Mizunuma appears before us, bows, and thanks us for our “assistance”. Heard similar about their some of the rest of their contingent.

Wouldn’t get that from one of the locals.
