Why is this relocation happening? Something doesn't add up. What is really going on?

Dunno, but here's a self-edited press release:
Australia's fastest growing
thoroughbred enterprise, Aquis, has opted to move its New South Wales
operations, including eight stallions as well as a significant amount of
breeding stock, to Gooree Stud at Mudgee ahead of the 2020 season. The sudden move ends
Aquis' three-year tenancy arrangement at Emirates Park at Murrurundi and sees
the burgeoning outfit leave the Hunter Valley for the historic Gooree Park,
located around 200km away. Gooree Park made the
historic decision early this year to open itself up to outside clients after 40
years under the ownership of Philippine businessman Eduardo Cojuangco, who
passed away last month. Aquis CEO Tony Williams said his company was looking to remodel
its approach to its business in New South Wales and had opted out of its deal
with Emirates Park to pursue an agreement with Gooree Park. "Gooree Park had been
opened up for the public and we saw it as a great opportunity to be able to
access such an iconic farm with a great reputation for being able to rear and
breed great horses," Williams told TDN AusNZ. "It also enables us to have our
stallions situated out there. It is a little further away than the Hunter
Valley obviously, but it's a world-class set-up and we are pretty pleased to be
able to go out to Gooree." Aquis will stand Pierata and Bellevue
Hill for their first
seasons at Gooree, alongside second-season stallions Santos and Brave
Smash (Jpn), third-season
stallions Invader, Jukebox and Spieth (NZ) and fourth-season stallion Divine
Prophet. Williams admitted plans
had progressed very quickly with the 2020 breeding season less than two months
away, but he is confident everything will be in place in time. "Our stallions will be out at Gooree
under the Aquis banner, and we will be sending a lot of our stock out there as
well, as well as having stock at our Queensland and Victorian farms," he
said. "It’s all moved
quickly, but we are always thinking of what is best for the business going
forward. With Gooree Park changing its own model, it changed the dynamic of our
thoughts and we looked to take that opportunity. "Is there ever a good or bad time to
make changes? You need to make them as you see fit. You work within the
constraints you have. Yes, it’s close to the season, but we will manage it all
and we’ve got some good staff to go with us out there." Williams said there would
be staffing implications from the change, with all of Aquis' stock, except for
the stallions, to be under the management of Gooree Park, which is headed by
long-time General Manager Andrew Baddock. |

I'm really interested in this - Twitter suggested that there was some messiness between Emirates and Aquis which resulted in the move. It does suggest that Santos will be one of the 8 stallions moving, but as far as I know he is owned by Emirates?
Would be very interested in any inside info. |

If Santos didn't move to Gooree it'd be proof positive that there'd been a fall-out. But his moving could equally be read as an agreement/arrangement that would quell any such interpretation.
The current staff at Emirates might well prove to be the source of some inside info, given almost all them will be in the Centrelink queue quite shortly. Robbo, I wonder if the move 200 kms west might affect the price of the shares being offered in Spieth at MM later this month? Still believe they'll be sold, if not passed in, for no more than his advertised service fee in 2020.

John the sales entry person must have been busy in the lauderingmat. Twice.
But more seriously, this mob is legless in Vic. And hope they've paid up for the $20 million worth of yearlings it's purchased over the last two years.

Aquis has undertaken a restructure of its operation in Australia and has flagged that further changes are likely as the world comes to terms with the impact of COVID-19. ANZ Bloodstock News on Friday reported that a number of employees from the five-year-old organisation were this week informed their services were no longer required as part of an ongoing restructure. "With COVID, it has given us the opportunity to put steps in place to introduce a new strategic plan for Aquis," managing director Shane McGrath said. "We have elected to change the way that we are doing business and there will be a lot more in the future. "Across most industries, people have had time to reflect and review and we're going to try to be a little bit more innovative in how we do business and we'll implement new things. "There will be more changes in store over the next six to 12 months as we implement our new strategy." Aquis last year extended its operation to take in three states after leasing a property near Seymour, where they stand Siege Of Quebec, Lean Mean Machine and Mystic Journey's sire Needs Further. No announcement was forthcoming from Aquis regarding whether the change in strategy would impact its Victorian imprint. Aquis had 18 stallions under management across three states this year. It also has bases in Queensland and New South Wales. Despite the restructure, McGrath indicated that Aquis would again be active on next year's yearling sale circuit, where it has been a key player in recent years. "I am looking around at Magic Millions yearlings at the moment now that the breeding season is slowing down," he said. "We have had a great season across the board with support from the breeders and shareholders and we look forward to supporting those same people in the sales ring where possible. "We have had a phenomenal year on the racetrack and the push is to try and find the next Golden Slipper winner."

I see via Twitter that Bellevue Hill, Spieth, Jukebox and Santos were moved late in the season to the Canungra Farm for late Queensland covers. What is going on?

Announced overnight that Leneva Park will be taking over the Seymour property currently housing Aquis Victoria and also the management of Lean Mean Machine and Royal Meeting. I think Aquis is basically going to be solely a Queensland operation going forward, which will be interesting for Pierata.

And here comes the dismantling of the NSW Aquis operation. What does it mean for shareholders in the stallions? Courtesy of ANZ Bloodstock News.
Aquis considering offers to take on its NSW stallions for season 2021 and beyond Aquis Farm will make a call on the future of its NSW-based stallions including high-profile Group 1 winners Pierata (Pierro) and Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) by the end of this month as the Hong Kong racing and breeding business continues its rationalisation. The Tony Fung-owned Aquis Farm operated a three-state stallion operation in 2020 including an eight-strong NSW roster based at Lincoln Farm at Blandford after the shock relocation from Emirates Park in July. Aquis Farm managing director Shane McGrath yesterday told ANZ Bloodstock News that the organisation was considering its options for the next breeding season. “Now that the dust has settled on the Magic Millions, obviously after outsourcing our Victorian stallions, we received a number of proposals from NSW-based farms in relation to our NSW stallion roster,” McGrath said. “So, in fairness to the stallions and their various owners, we have decided to look at the options with a view to deciding by the end of January how we can add the most value to our stallions for the 2021 season.” As well as standing Pierata, the winner of the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), and Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Brave Smash, Aquis also had Bellevue Hill (Pierro), Santos (I Am Invincible), Invader (Snitzel), Divine Prophet (Choisir), Jukebox (Snitzel) and Spieth (Thorn Park) standing in NSW last year. Last month, it was revealed that Leneva Park would take over the lease of the Darren Thomas-owned Seymour property where Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar), Royal Meeting (Invincible Spirit) and Needs Further (Encosta De Lago) stood in 2020. Both Lean Mean Machine and Royal Meeting will stand at the rebranded Leneva Park Seymour farm, but Needs Further has returned to his initial home at Armidale Stud in Tasmania while shareholders in the Group 1-producing stallion assess their options ahead of the next breeding season. Before shareholders elected to send Needs Further to Victoria last year, there had been interest from stallion farms in the Hunter Valley and Queensland, as well as South Australia, and some of those options are believed to remain on the table. Fung, who along with racing partner Phoenix Thoroughbreds, bought 19 yearlings at the Magic Millions sale for a combined spend of $11,645,000, with young Sydney trainer Annabel Neasham set to be the major beneficiary. Pierata - 157 covers @ $44,000 (first season) Brave Smash - 73 @ $19,250 (2nd season, down from 122 @ $22,000) Bellevue Hill - 38 @ $11,000 (first season) Santos - 52 @ $13,200 (2nd season, down from 137 @ $16,500) Invader - 110 @ $22,000 (3rd season, 111 & 156 @ $27,500) Divine Prophet - 108 @ $22,000 (4th season, 153, 119 & 170 @ same price) Jukebox - 17 @ $8,800 (3rd season, down from 94 & 63 @ $11,000) Spieth - 37 @ $11,000 (3rd season, down from 89 & 149 @ $16,500) In NBA terms, it's a roster full of expiring contracts, whereby the unexposed 'promise' represents the contract. The carousel beckons.

Can't say that we didn't see this coming. Crazy stuff - there's no way there is a broodmare population in Queensland to support this number of stallions and it's fantasy to think that broodmare owners in NSW are going to walk on or relocate mares. So Aquis will be left with trying to make these stallions with their own mares, which can only mean that some stallions are left with very little support - the 2020 covering figures referred to above confirm that.
Surely they would've been better off looking to keep some of their better credentialled stallions in NSW, potentially at Kia Ora. Some long-time readers of the forum may recall that I actively pursued a share in Spieth last year but failed - can't be any more relieved to have dodged that bullet given the news overnight, notwithstanding that his first yearlings have been well-received in the sales ring and look to be a chance. |
