Two $1m juvenile races for Brisbane

Queensland racing is backing its elite late-season juvenile racing with the announcement on Monday of a $2.25 million Future Champions Series.

The state will boast two $1 million juvenile races with the group 2 Sires Stakes in May boosted from $400,000 last year while the group 1 J J Atkins in June rises $400,000 to $1 million.

The 2020 Future Champions Series for two-year-olds will include:

- $250,000 group 2 Champagne Stakes (1200m), Doomben, May 9;

- $1 million group 2 Sires’ Stakes (1400m), Eagle Farm, May 23; and

- $1 million group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m), Eagle Farm, June 6.

This will be the first time that the established two-year-old races have been joined as a series.

Over the years, the honour roll across the three races includes The Autumn Sun, Zoustar, Brazen Beau, Press Statement, Sizzling, Darci Brahma, Show A Heart, Mossman, Mahogany, Winning Rupert and Melody Belle.

‘’’The TAB Queensland Carnival has long been a springboard to stardom for two-year-olds,” Racing Queensland CEO Brendan Parnell said.

‘’Having turbo-charged our summer carnival, we’re looking forward to enhancing winter with record prize money for our late season two-year-olds.

“With the new QTISx bonuses on top of the $1 million Sires’ Produce and the $1 million JJ Atkins, there will be more than $3 million up for grabs for juveniles next year.”

BRC Chairman Neville Bell said the series would be a welcomed addition to the winter carnival.

“These races really are the nursery of Australia’s modern racing history and we’re thrilled to be collaborating with Racing Queensland for this Series,” Bell said.

“This is an innovative series that will only increase the interest in these races and the winter carnival as a whole.”

Nominations for the Future Champions Series close on December 6 followed by first acceptances on January 21 and second acceptances on April 28.

All nominations will be automatically entered for the three races that comprise the Series.

I completely agree. One of the last things the industry needs now is further emphasis on 2yr old racing. I really didn’t think we needed that Golden Gift 2yr old race on the weekend. Whereas I thought the Golden Eagle was one of the better races of the Spring and attracted quality 4yr olds. Loved the concept of a 4yr old race

I see the Golden Slipper prize money has been boosted from from an already inflated $3.5m to be $5.0m for 2022, plus theres some $1m bonus for winning one of the lead up races.Confused

How is this prize money boost going to improve the quality of the race?  And what is throwing a bonus going to achieve?

2yos really dont deserve to be racing for such high stake money & personally I dont believe any 2yo race should be worth more than $1m.

But if RNSW want to inject more prize money into 2yo racing, how about something for the Sires Produce & Champagne Stks?

I floated this idea a few years ago, where each of the 3 legs of the Sydney 2yo triple crown be worth the same amount:

Golden Slipper - $2m (down from $5m)
Sires Produce - $2m (up from $1m)
Champagne Stks - $2m (up from $500k)

The aggregate prize money on offer at $6m would be the almost the same across the 3 races (so the ledger balances there) but altering the allocation there would likely be an improvement in the quality of the Sires & Champagne & be unlikely to impact the quality of the Golden Slipper.

They have boosted and thrown money into country, provincial, staying and sprinting older events.

Why not keep the Golden Slipper in it's place.

You can't say it hurt Anamoe.  Blimey if he'd managed to win it he would be the hottest property around - well he is probably that anyway.  Actually most of the field from last year have come out firing still this season.  The winner went for a spell and who knows could be back better than ever.

This race is one of the prized ones - and to stay that way they needed to keep the prizemoney relevant.  Everything had been going into the Championships at that time of year so good for them to up the anti.
