Former Footscray AFL footballer Liam Picken has launched action in the Supreme Court against his former cub, their club doctors and the AFL claiming he was not told about cognitive impairments when he was sent out to play, claiming they were negligent and failed in their duty of care. Over a career  of 9 years he played 198 gamed for Footscray, he is the son of former Collingwood / Sydney player , Bill Picken, who played 240 AFL games in the 1970s through to the 1980s.
Like anyone who plays a professional contact sport he surely would have been aware of the risks in playing AFL, however he says he was not told. With a father, a brother ( Marcus ) and uncle ( Jonathan Brown ) also having played AFL football at that elite level you would think he would have been aware of risks that go with playing AFL

What utter nonsense, that's like saying I walked into a butchers and left with some beef, I want to sue them, no one told me they had chicken for sale. How can anyone play a very physical sport and not know of what the consequences are ? Only an alien visiting earth would qualify for that kind of ignorance.

The only people who will win in these class actions against the AFL will be lawyers who will be thinking " how long am I going to win Powerball ever week without ever buying a ticket ? "

Well it looks like the class action, as result of playing whilst concussed in their playing days, by a group of  60 ex AFL players are taking against the AFL is gaining momentum by the day. In the past week ex players are coming out saying since retiring from the game they are suffering with headaches, insomnia , depression, anxiety , mood swings, and are unable to hold down jobs in civilian life .

Having played a contact sport and received money they would not have been paid outside of football will be the AFL's defence, but those ex players will argue clubs allowed them to continue to play whilst concussed was the main contributing factor to their current problems.

As ex AFL champion, Leigh Matthews, opined today current players are not paid enough. they should receive 50% more. The average player's salary is $406,105 a long way off the $11.8 million paid in total to the AFL's nine senior executives . The AFL men' competition generates 90 % of the game's revenue but the players salary cap in only 28 % of that revenue .

Matthews said even if a footballer lasted in the game for 10 years on that $400,000 he might end his career in his mid thirties years of age with maybe a home and a little savings but it would not be enough to mean that he would not have to work for the rest of his life.

F F S 400k a year and you reckon they'd be almost broke in ten years ?? or couldn't retire ? jezus christ that's some poor money management on par with drug addiction. That's close on 4million, let me tell you something, if i won a million tomorrow you wouldn't see me for dust I could make it last the rest of my life and still have plenty to give to my children.

Cmon Bobby, you know they don’t pay 50c in the dollar, and that’s  before SPIA, which reduces tax at either ends of their careers…

Last night I watched movie the  "Concussion ", starring Will Smith on Netflix . The storyline is about a pathologist who discovers CTE in the brain of ex NRL footballers who die prematurely. CTE can only be found in the brain after an autopsy. Three AFL footballers Graham " Polly" Farmer, Danny Frawley and  Shane Tuck, all after an autopsy were found to have CTE.
After watching that movie I now believe the case is stronger for those 60 ex- AFL in their class action against the AFL

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a brain condition thought to be linked to repeated head injuries and blows to the head. It slowly gets worse over time and leads to dementia, but the right help and support can manage the symptoms.

I think the Crows have a valid argument in regards to the comparison between the two bumps. Picket's was far worse than McAdam's, yet got the lighter penalty.

 masterclass at the G, today.

Never seen a better half of football from the Pies. They would have blown most teams away.

So much for tagging Nicky Daicos.

Disgraceful decision in the Norths/ Freeo match. The result might not have changed if Freeo got the kick...but it should still have been paid.

VFL/AFL reigning premiers to start a season 0-3 after the first 3 rounds:

1942 - Melbourne
1959 - Collingwood
1976 - North Melbourne
2023 - Geelong

Collingwood (1959) ended up making the finals after being 0-5. North Melbourne (1976) ended up making the Grand Final and lost to Hawthorn.

the Jack Crisp video drama is highlighting how dangerous it is for footballers to be on social media.

No-one is saying Crisp said or did these things, but it has been pointed out that Dustin Martin was targeted just before a Richmond-Lions game.

So...is this a ploy by a Lions fan to disrupt their opponents' equilibrium?

Perhaps the AFL integrity unit should investigate that.

Can someone explain the logic of this AFL round?

Why are two non Adelaide teams playing in a paddock in the Adelaide Hills? And then a double header by the River Torrens again without the SA Teams?

Seriously?

Would ManUtd even consider playing in Barrow, Alaska any of their EPL games?

they thought the NRL idea was worth duplicating...

The Adelaide hotels must be enjoying all the revenue.

Sydney are pushing to host next year's event.
