If my memory is any good, Ron Clarke lit the flame and Phil " The Greek ", on behalf of his better half, declared the Games open.

With the passing of time only three Australian individual gold medallists in the 1956 Games are still alive.
Dawn Fraser ( 84 ) Lorraine Crapp ( 83 ) & David Thiele ( 83 ) complete the trio.
Marlene Matthews who won two bronze medals behind Betty Cuthbert in the 100 & 200 metres is still alive at 87 years of age.

On its first journey to the Southern Hemisphere the plan accepted was to carry the flame by runners from Olympia, in Elis, to Athens whence Qantas Airlines would give it safe passage to Darwin, its first stop in Australia. A Royal Australian Air Force plane would carry it across the north of the continent to Cairns, on the north-east cost, which was to be the starting point in Australia of a relay of 2,830 runners who would carry it day and night to arrive at the Main Stadium at 4.32 on the afternoon of 22nd November.

When the torch arrived in Sydney a university student attempted to present a fake torch to the Lord Mayor of Sydney at the Sydney Town Hall , but the torch from Olympia in Greece eventually arrived and then was carried through NSW & Victoria to the MCG where the flame was ignited.

JFK was assassinated on November 22nd.

On the anniversary today hundreds of Qanon nutters have gathered in Dallas expecting his resurrection.
