Possibly.

I don't buy the Smith retirement talk. The guy would marry a cricket bat if it was legal.

He's 36 and achieved nearly everything possible in the game.  He's still 3000 runs away from Pontings record test career runs for Australia, so realistically that record may be a bridge too far.

Australia play only one test between the end of the Ashes and the tour of South Africa next spring, the next big tour is India in Feb 2027, when he'll be 37 years, 8 months.

He and his wife live in New York, suspect he's going to reach a point where his lawyer wife says how about you slow down your career and let my build mine.

Did I hear correctly the other day that Starc bought a home in Terry hills for $24.5 million dollar roos ?

I didn't think they got paid that much ??

No Konstas, boy they really like to throw young players under the bus and watch them burn eh ?

So basically it's the same team as always, just no Cummins for one test, lol.

Also I'm fully convinced now that Labuschagne's exit from the Australia test team was by design, intentional, a tactic - ploy, to get him away, fired up and back in form, well look at that, it worked, of course it did. Such is the fear of losing a single test match, the usual fossils will all be playing.

Does anyone seriously think they would play an Ashes series in Australia, without Marnus on the field ?

I would play Sean Abbott, he can bowl and bat well, he is the one that stands out to me as a player who can fill a multiple role in Perth, would they bother playing Inglis as a batter only ?

It'll be Khawaja, Labuschagne/Weatherald, Labuschagne/Green, Smith, Head, Webster, Carey, Starc, Boland, Hazlewood, Lyon.

Where Labuschagne bats will be determined by who is in out of Weatherald and Green.

Not sure why you think Konstas should be in the squad, his form has been abysmal, throwing him in against a fit and firing Wood and Archer would do more damage to him than telling him to try get his spot back with Shield runs.

Inglis in as cover for Carey more than anything.

Something tells me this series will be all about Benjamin Stokes. hope is fit and stays fit cause he is the only one that has that gimme the ball I'll fkn do it then attitude. He has great stamina and can be the only way England get back into games at times.

This was good.

Hate that we never get proper english commentary down under. it really would make it nicer to watch and listen to.

When Australia play in England, they let all the aussie greats commentate, when it comes to OZ all we get is the usual Aussie screeching with no Athers or Nasser or any decent polite commentators. It'd be nice to get Mark Butcher and Athers commentating alongside the locals. They have to do post game podcasts from their hotels, what a waste.

The cringefest of Vaughn as the English expert is just painful. FOX cricket with Mark Waugh, Kerry O'keef and Mark Howard seriously ???

Bumble and Broad will be on 7, ABC have announced Jonathan Agnew, Allison Mitchell and Phil Tuffnell.  But I'm sure you'll moan about this as well, as is your usual style.

I hope for Englands stake that some of the others step up and prove to be the lynch pins, Stokes is just another Andrew Flintoff, albeit not even as good as Freddie, capable of playing the occasional great innings with the bat but lacking the consistency required to be a series dominator, perhaps the most over-rated cricketer of his generation.

See Starc is playing Shield next week. Either on very limited overs, or Abbott & Doggett will be getting games in the Ashes because Starc at the end of a series loses his oomph. Needs to be kept with some freshness. Not sure where they give him a strategic Ashes game off but he will need it or he will be a net bowler come Test 5.

This series is going to be a test of attrition that's for sure given that the quick men need to get through 5 test matches in 7 weeks.  The obvious rest test for Starc is Adelaide, although he will no doubt protest that.

I will be surprised of Hazlewood makes it through all 5 tests, although he is a fantastic bowler at his best he has been unable to play the entire summer in recent seasons.

Boland could well play all 5 tests, he's durable enough and a combination of Cummins and Hazlewood's fitness plus resting Starc may necessitate that.

The heat will play a large part of what happens, if it's ridiculously hot, humid or both it can shorten their spells by default. Hopefully they luck out and get mild conditions during some of the tests so we get to see the quicks go to war.

No one wants to see a test match played out in 40 degree heat with endless water breaks and checks for players safety re heat stroke. So far this spring/summer the weather seems very dynamic/unpredictable, 15 degrees over the average & hot/sultry one day, then cold n blustery the next, back to hot n windy the next day.

Above all we don't want any games washed out, so far we've had a couple of weather affected white ball games, hopefully that's not an indication of what's to come this summer.

Won't happen but here is the side I would like to see:

1 Head
2 Khawaja (Konstas if Ussie is past it)
3 Marnus
4 Smith
5 Inglis
6 Webster (Green if he performs)
7 Carey
8 Starc
9 Lyon
10 Hazlewood
11 Boland

I think Head 1 and Inglis 5 gives us more than Weatherald 1 and Head 5.

Swap Boland for Cummins when fit. Brush Lyon for an extra paceman on some pitches.

Why would you move the best counter-attacking 5 in test cricket to open?

Konstas needs to to back to Shield cricket and score consistent runs before he gets another shot, at this stage he's got that one Shield match that looks increasingly like an outlier when he scored a hundred in each innings, another hundred for Australia A in India and that dear in the headlights 50 on boxing day.  He needs to go back to Shield level and show he can score consistent runs before he deserves another shot, not just get handed it because someone thinks he's talented.

I reckon Hayden and Warner could have been handy counter attacking 5s if given the chance!

Certainly

Unlike some middle order “greats” who couldn’t bat up the order these 2 would have zero problem dominating down the order. Haydos in particular

The difference is Hayden and Warner developed their games and came through the ranks as openers, Travis Head has developed his game and came through the ranks as a middle order batsman.  It's not just the difference in what the new ball does early compared to after 30 odd overs or whenever Head comes in normally, its also the mental approach, turning around from fielding to batting in 10 minutes after the opposition close their innings, even the approach when coming to the crease, the openers are there to start the innings, at 5 Head is required to either try swing momentum or continue the momentum when coming in at 5.

Hayden and Warner may have worked at 5 but that doesn't mean Head would work long term as an opener, Smith already tried it and as a superior batsman to Head it didn't work for him.  Anyone who knows cricket will tell you its easier moving down the order than moving up.

Courtesy of the ABC:

In short:

Cameron Green is set to bowl with his new action in Western Australia's Sheffield Shield clash against Queensland.

Green is expected to bowl 15-20 overs in the match, his first bowling action since October 5, when he bowled four overs against NSW.

What's next?

Green's ability to bowl will likely determine whether opener Jake Weatherald is handed a Test debut or whether fellow all-rounder Beau Webster can remain in the side.

It would be incredibly harsh to drop Beau Webster given how he has started his test career, providing able support with both ball and bat so far in his career.
