Interesting selection choices by Australia today, Beau Webster belatedly into the XI with Richardson coming out, meaning no front line spinner in Sydney for the first time in nearly 40 years.

Suggests the selectors have not got much confidence in the group of spinners behind Nathan Lyon.

Talk about a deep batting line-up, Webster at 8, Neser at 9 and Starc at 10 is hardly a tail in the traditional sense.

Once upon a time we had batsmen who could spin.

 Where are they now?

That Steve Smith bloke started as a leg spinner & Head has popped up multiple occasions to help win games for us. Marnus can also bowl leggies.

Travis, Marnus & Webster all can.

I’ve been baffled for many years as to why Smith chose to give up bowling after initially being selected as a leg spinner

JJ touches on a good point, batsmen don't seem to bowl nearly as much as they did in times gone by, the Waugh brothers, Greg Chappell, Doug Walters, Bob Simpson and Allan Border all took between 40 and 100 test wickets, sure they mostly did it at a cost higher than the front line bowlers but they gave those bowlers a rest and sometimes pinched a crucial wicket.

He's still guaranteed himself another 12 months in the side, they'll beat Bangladesh in August easily enough that there won't be any pressure on him and there won't be the same media pressure if he fails in South Africa, so he should hold his spot without media pressure until at least Boxing Day next.

What a wonderful interview with Usman's wife and family.

Just hope the Aussies haven't been Root-ed by that magnificent innings of Joe's.

Well now let's see if he can build a partnership with Smith or the batting bowlers.

Australia don't need to win this match, I think they'll just bat until they're all out and play the match from there.  Webster is more then capable of hanging around for a while as are both Starc and Boland, I wouldn't rule out 550+ yet.  If the lead balloons beyond 150 I suspect England's minds will already be back in Noosa.

Smith may well not get close, however in his mind he's looking to make 200: that's the type of person he is.
And will be making it clear to Webster and Starc that he's looking for their support.

I reckon the CA told the curator of the SCG that NO MORE 2-DAY TEST!

I reckon this test could go 7 days if it was 1930!

I reckon the Australian brains trust will discuss 3 possible plans from here.

A: Aggressive Declare on the overnight score with the plan of bowling England out while leaving enough time to try.  This would be more likely if a win was needed, given the position of the series, they have no need to go down this road.  This approach could also see England position themselves into holding a defendable lead on a 4th innings pitch.

B: Defensive: Go out tomorrow and continue to play as they are, not considering a declaration until the match is in such a position that an English victory is not possible.  This approach would see a lead approaching 300 at the mid-way point of the day if not bowled out and if that is achieved would likely see England crumble with little to play for.

C: The least likely, go out there and go for it for 30-60 minutes, either be bowled out or reach a lead of 200, declare on that and get into their bowling.

What happened with Smitty this morning?  I had to go out for more medical tests, even though a certain poster thinks I'm a hypochondriac.

Just got in. Did they declare or bat out?
