Worthy of a thread of its own this series.

England have announced their squad for the Ashes now, the most surprising is Will Jacks coming in having not played a test since 2022.  Bashir also the only front line spinner alongside 6 quicks, suggesting that the batsman may be asked at times to provide the spin bowling.

Worth noting for historical purposes, the first England squad to tour Australia this century not containing one James Anderson.

The worlds oldest fossil was discovered in Australia, they named it Rupert Murdoch.

So glad to see Atkinson, Potts, Tongue and Carse, I feel like those second string bowlers will be doing a lot of work during the hot part of the days when things can be hard & slow. Batting wise,  I hope Pope can score some runs and want to see Brook place more value on his wicket.

Why would I take effectively $2 about a $10 chance with TAB? Especially when you will just make a new nickname Fiddles/Quez.

Only Stokes, Crawley, Pope, Root and Wood have played a test in Australia before, of those only Root and Stokes have played multiple series down under.

Seems a bit fool hardy to not have a genuine warm up match in Australia prior to the tests.

I think they-some players will use the tri series in NZ to warm up, they will play in one or two games between them I reckon. These days they play so much cricket having a small rest and or some white ball stuff leading up maybe all they need to stay fit and not risk injury etc..

Do you think a couple white ball matches in NZ and an intra-squad match at Lilac Hill will be sufficient warm up for them? Although I guess given the Australian MO of recent times has been to give them a game against a team called the "cricket Australia XI" that consists of a combination of good club players and a couple of old guys who couldn't make the Shield team that week, all played out on the national highway.

It's unfortunate we won't see an Ashes series played out as they used to be, when the England side would play first class fixtures against each of the Shield sides, plus the Australian XI, plus the traditional One Day fixtures thrown in against teams like the ACB Chairmans XI at Lilac Hill to open a tour, the PM's XI in Canberra and even the Bradman XI in Bowral.

Oh and take no notice of wunwun, the NRL thread is heading toward the crescendo of him thinking his NRL teams success is directly linked to himself, he just needs everyone to watch, its less about Penrith and more about his self-proclaimed greatness.

Gee. One century between them and that was 12 years ago!

Although I'm sure Wood has been hit for some centuries.

Centuries yesterday for Henry Hunt, Matt Renshaw, Jake Lehmann, Peter Handscomb and today Marnus Labuschagne, of these probably after Marnus Renshaw is probably the one who's the greatest chance of an Ashes call-up if he can put up big runs to start the Shield season.  Although Handscomb may be an outside chance of playing a test if injury were to strike the middle order.

In the bowlers Fergus O'Niell went wicketless while his new ball partner Boland took 2 in his usual economical way, Michael Neser took 4/75 to lead the way for Qld, including the wicket of Jake Weatherald, considered by many as the leading candidate to partner Khawaja up top.  Nathan Lyon has gone wicketless so far for NSW but his one time replacement Ashton Agar took 3/5 in 5.5 overs (including Lyon) to help dismiss the blue caps for 170, Agar right now is batting with WA still 35 behind.

While some good results for a few I'm not sure it makes test selection any clearer.

Tassies best two batsmen Weatherald & Silk made runs. Only failure from an established batsman was Jewell. Leading into Renshaw, Khawaja & Marnus making runs it seems its a batsmans pitch. So not sure what can be gained from these blokes scoring runs. Although good to see Marnus in form because him at his best does make Aust a much better side.

Visa versa at WACA and nobody has made runs. So not sure what can be gained from test selection when its a bowlers wicket. The centuries in the SA V Vic may have been most valuable, BUT both bowling attacks are pretty mediocre save for Boland...who got the 2 SA century makers out. We probably learnt/reinforced from a bowling perspective Boland is a test player & Fergus ONeill is not there yet.

So I don't think any of these results in isolation change anything for test selection. Weight of runs/wickets further into the Shield season more important than one off games.

I think if the selectors are considering a recall for Labuschagne, the fact he scored 160 and at a good clip will please them, none of the others passed 130 or scored their runs at the rate Labuschagne did.  I suspect they won't just want to see him scoring runs at this level, they'd also like to see him dominating.

1
2 Khawaja
3
4 Smith
5 Head
6
7 Carey
8 Starc
9 Lyon
10 Boland
11 Hazlewood

That is locked in. Khwaja probably most in danger.

How do selectors frame 1, 3, 6.

I'd like Konstas, Marnus & then toss up Green/Webster.

However selectors may be favouring Marnus, Green, Webster.

Possibly someone else could put their hand up - most likely an opener. If so Green has two fights on his hand - #3 v Marnus & #6 V Webster.

Or unlikely, but do they f around with Smiths, or even Heads spot in the order to accomodate somebody. I doubt it but its possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if Smith or Head are asked to move to 3 to accommodate Green at either 4 or 5, I think they'll want to keep Webster at 6, I think you've called it well, its Labuschagne, Green and Konstas fighting for two spots.

I also wouldn't completely rule Renshaw out yet if he makes decent runs in the ODI series vs India.

Shield round-up today.

Konstas made a duck, Harris 4, Weatherald 18, Bancroft 3, Labuschagne yet to bat of the contenders.  Green and Webster are both not playing.

Of the bowlers Scott Boland removed Konstas in taking 1/18 off 6 overs, Fergus O'Niell also chipped in with 2/12 off 8 overs, Nathan Lyon went wicketless, Sean Abbott was the first ever injury substitute in first class cricket, not something he would have wanted this summer with a test debut potentially on offer, Michael Neser took 4/30 in 15.3 overs in dismissing South Australia, he may be a chance to come in for Brisbane if they decide to go with 4 quicks or rest/injury rules one of the others, Mitch Swepson also took 4/50, although given how Sydney has played in recent seasons his next realistic test hope may be early 2027 for the tours of India and Bangladesh.

I think the pace bowling is nearly a more fascinating race than the batting with Jhye Richardson, Lance Morris and Spencer Johnson all injured, Fergus O'Niell may be able to rocket himself into a test debut this summer with a good run of bowling in these pre-Ashes Shield fixtures.

Konstas LBW decision was appalling. DRS would have saved him 100%. However, it probably wasn't great technique to get hit on the pad in the first place.

Peter Handscomb only bloke to make runs in that game. I feel he probably could have been given a few more chances at Test cricket. Hard to have displaced Marnus Smith Head in this era, but possibly could have played 6 instead of Green when Green was still very raw. So could have Maxwell!

Cricket Australia posted some pics on Facebook today. Must be a few Aussies training together. Starc is going grey. It worries me, never been one to get through a series at prime age. He is ageing. I have concerns. Hope I'm wrong.

Marnus Labuschagne scored another ton, 159 to be exact, at a good clip as well, he must be nearly certain to line up in Perth in a couple weeks now.

Scott Boland took a sound 3/59 off 15 overs, playing a solid second fiddle to his new ball partner Fergus O'Niell who took 5/26 from 16 overs, with 6 maidens at a miserly 1.62 economy rate, he just needs to continue in that kind of form and he may be the next man up after the big 4 pacers.

Jake Weatherald scored 94 at nearly a run a ball to keep himself in the frame for a test debut in Perth, Sam Konstas and Cameron Green must have some personal concern for their spots with the form of Labuschagne and Weatherald.

The veteran Jackson Bird turned back the clock taking 3/38 off 18 overs to help Tasmania dismiss WA for 172, all 3 poles were top 6 batsman for the old fella, he hasn't played a test match for 8 years and is nearly 39 but stranger things have happened!

Yep Marnus is back in the team for sure now. I hope at #3 so he can just play as he normally does.

I have Webster ahead of Green also (if those two end up having to be split)

I’d have both Webster & Green in the team for Perth and Brisbane. Dropping Lyon who wont be required on either surface.
Probably to much for the dumbarse selectors to consider
