Not to worry, I should be okay. I know horse poop when I see it in politics and have intimate knowledge of it in horseracing. Handicapping at a distance of 16,000 miles puts me at quite a disadvantage. Reading a race card in a foreign language gives new challenges to my handicapping skills. Hope the race goes off under torrential rains your punts report previous races accurately.Big smile

Hope she can do it.  She's up against it as the new four year old but she has lovely form behind her.  The other mare Via Sistina is outstanding.

Of course GAJ, you're very welcome for sure and certain.  Thumbs Up

Plenty of time for you to figure in the finish with about 20-odd races to go.

Oh yes, GAJ, it’ll be wonderful to have you here with us!

And late entries have a pretty good record, I think. Not to mention that some of us take a few weeks to get off the crease so the disadvantage is minuscule Embarrassed

I still haven't seen the race but the big mare obviously has come back in fine form and Aeliana didn't let the side down going that close.  Two many winners but better if your name begins with A (Afros) than V unless you get on top by yourself!

'Roughies' for clarity.
1st - 4th multiply the SP x prizemoney for that placing Big smile

Afros' SP comp is along similar lines with a slight difference; hopefully he'll enlighten us yet again LOL

Not sure when the final field is released, but because of the time difference I'm going try and stay ahead of it all.  Pride of Jenni appeared on one of the many punter race cards, so she may be tentative if that is OK.

Hey Shammy, everyone else is probably still asleep so I'll have a go at explaining for you ...

Our final fields for Saturday races usually come out on Wednesday. And Gay3 posts the full race cards in the Racing Forum.

If you don't put in your picks before race time, you get zilch.

Once you've put in your picks for the comp, you aren't allowed to make changes unless there's a scratching. If you don't submit your substitute for a scratching before race time, you'll automatically be allocated the favourite. Some of our more organised players include their choice of substitutes when they post their picks in case they aren't online when it happens. Some of us fly by the seat of our pants Embarrassed

Hope that helps a bit. I'm sure our wonderful organisers will give you some leeway due to distance. Great to have you on board and adding some international credibility to our comps! Big smile

Guarantee the late start makes no difference at the finish line, GAJ LOL As SC said, there’s 20+ races to go. Though none of us can nab Vincent in the Winners comp - he’s a legend! Still, we turn up and have a go Thumbs Up
Honestly, the comps and camaraderie are a highlight of my Saturdays. You’ll have a ball.

(Not to late for you to join us, Nick, PL, muss, mc, everyone. And we need you back TJ!)

Thank you. This information is very useful. No body can accuse me of cheating as I will always be a day late. I'll just leave my submission as it is until I get some official notification that I'm breaking the rules. Seems like most of TBV threads eventually get sticky, don't they. Been going over the sires. Most of them USA made giving your foals crops their speed.  I am beginning to feel at home I am a fan of Americanism in breeding.Big smile

Hey shammy I'll note the above but give you a second chance this time if you get to look at the race.  Definately good choices but then the G1's usually have the best horses so that helps in the picking.  As said above with Gay putting the races up we will let you know to go have a look.  Also if you get a scratching as said you get a sub - the fav on the day.  That can work in the winners comp usually better than in the other two.  But better a runner than nothing.   We have had floods, internet outage, fires etc which have disrupted entries.  The contestants live in all corners of Australia.  Pretty sure Brudder is overseas most of the time.  Don't think anyone in the comp comes in from England but you'll get the hang of things and find out soon enough who is the top of the class and who has class but doesn't always deliver.

Okay here is what our comps are.

There four competitions.

Comp 1.

W = Winners. This comp is where your selection gets 3 points if they win, 2 points if the finish 2nd and 1 point of they finish 3rd.

R = Roughies. In this comp, if your selection finishes 1st, 2nd,3rd or 4th, the prizemoney earned is added to your total.

SP = Starting Price. In this comp your selection's prizemoney earned is multiplied by the horses odds and that is your total. So if your selection earns $100,000, and is $10.00, your selection gains $1,000,000 for your total.

Now the fourth comp is a head to head comp, which is based on the Soccer World Cup draw. So there are pools where everyone plays each other (head to head) and the top two in each pool moves on into the knockout stages of the comp.

In this competition, selections odds are divided by their placing and the odds. So if your selection finishes say fifth and they start @ $10.00, then your selections percentage is 2.0%.

Now during the spring there are races where prizemoney is paid down to tenth position. This prizemoney is included so if you select a horse at say $101.00, but they run 5th, then your selection will score 20% and that will usually be enough to win a HTH clash.

I am assuming that Afros will split the SP and HTH comps this spring as it was quite rightly pointed out that the SP and HTH comps are so different that selecting the same horses for both are usually not the way to go.

Hopefully that has helped Shammy.

Thank you voyager! (and furious)

Certainly has helped me understand the SP and HTH comps (though understanding may not increase my success Big smile)
