Well it is that time of year when a European lad's and lass's thoughts turn to amour, blooming flowers and the one day spring classics in cycling.
With the Strade Bianche kicking things of this weekend I have taken oneone's request to preview the cycling. I have divided each preview of the cycling into the world tour teams. I have divided each team into the following sections - General Classification chances. One day classic contenders. Stage win chances. Jersey contenders. A full team preview. The best nine riders of each team and thier scores out of ten which gives each team a score out of 90. This may take maybe a few hours to post all teams, so please bare with me. |

AG2R Citroen Mondiale.
GC Tour Contender- Ben O'Connor has finished 4th in the TDF yellow jersey comp and he is consistent enough to once again push for a top 5 spot. I actually think the route suits him this year and I am looking forward to the Australian 2023 tilt. One day classic contenders- O'Connor is similar to Valverde he can challenge on a course which has a couple of tough climbs. Obviously Greg Van Avermaet is a contender having already won and been competitive in the past. Will target the home classics in Belgium. Stage wins- If O'Connor has a bad early TDF, he can switch to an attack at the KOM polka dot jersey. Not having the pedigree of a few others if he can recover he could slip into mountain stage breakaways. Italian sprinter Andrea Vandrame, is a good solid sprinter but he lacks a lead out train so he will need to come up with a strategy to link in behind an opposing teams train. Aurelien Paret Peintre can get himself into a breakaway and he can attack from that break and hang on for a stage win. Jerseys- As stated above if he has a bad few early days O'Connor can switch to target the KOM. Other than that no jersey contenders here. Top 9 Squad Members- 45/90. Felix Gall = 4, Dorian Godon = 4, Ben O'Connor = 8, Aurelien Paret Peintre = 6, Micheal Schar = 5, Greg Van Avermaet = 7, Oliver Naesen = 4, Clement Berthet = 3, Geoffrey Bouchard = 4.

Alpecin Deceuninck
GC Tour Contender- Nothing happening here. One day classic- For this team it all comes down to Matthieu Van Der Poel. Already a winner of the Amstel Gold Classic, he is a very good tactical rider who can judge the right breakaway to join. Soren Andersen has shown the talent to finish at least top 10. He does ride Milan San Remo well and could be worth a bet for the podium there. Quentin Hermans is an improving rider who showed last season he could target the spring classics. Stage wins- Van Der Poel is a solid short distance climber so he can get into one of the mid race stage breakaways. If Soren Andersen can recapture his 2020 form he would be a stage contender as well. Jerseys- Not any genuine hopes here although Australian Robert Stannard showed in last seasons Vuelta with his KOM runner up finish that he can consistently gain points in that competition so if he can finish high up in one of the mountain top finishes he could challenge for that jersey again. Top 9 Squad Members - 42/90 Matthieu Van Der Poel = 7, Robert Stannard = 5, Kaden Groves = 4, Soren Andersen = 6, Jasper Philipsen = 6, Jensen Plowright = 3, Quentin Hermans = 4, Xandro Meurisse = 4, Dries De Bondt = 3. Team Preview- I am expecting this team to target the one day classic and stage victories. There is no major jersey contender as the riders are not consistent enough in gaining points in the different competitions and no GC contenders for the grand tours. Xandro Meurisse is a contender in the 1 week multi stage events for the KOM jersey.

Astana Qazaqstan
GC Tour Contender- No major GC contenders but Alexey Lutschenko is capable of finishing 6th to 12th. One day classic- Not much happening here. Luis Leon Sanchez has been an awesome one day classic rider but at 39 he may be just behind winning one, however he might have one last gasp challenge in his body. Stage wins- Mark Cavendish is past his best, his days of challenging for the green jersey are long gone, but he showed last season he can pull a couple of good efforts out to remind everyone how talented he was. Alexey Lutschenko is a very good climber and if he feels good I can see him getting into a mountain stage breakaway and hanging on from the GC contenders. Jersey- Last seasons efforts showed that Lutschenko could be a KOM contender. Top 9 Squad Members - 38/90. Joe Dombrowski = 5, Fabio Fellini = 5, Luis Leon Sanchez = 5, Alexey Lutschenko = 7, Mark Cavendish = 6, Simone Velasco = 3, Harold Tejado = 3, Martin Laas = 2, Yevgeny Fedorov = 2. Team Preview- It is a worry when your two headline riders are a 39 year old puncheur and a 37 year old sprinter. Alexey Lutschenko is a very good climber and if he chose to target the KOM he could win it. I can see him doing well in one of the 1 week multi stage events such as Tirreno Adriatico or Tour De Suisse etc.

Bahrain Victorious.
GC Tour Contenders- No GC contenders here. Australia's Jack Haig and Wort Poels are capable of finishing top 10 in the overall competition. One day classics- There are two genuine contenders here. Australia's Heinrich Haussler has always promised to win a one day classic and Matej Mohoric is yet another Slovenian who had a break out year with no less than six top ten finishes in one day races including Paris Roubaix and his national road total where he has to race Pogocar and Roglic. Stage wins- riders like Poels, Haig and Mikel Landa are always looking for the right breakaway or the right time to attack. Matej Mohoric had a break out season scoring two stage wins in the TDF last year. He reminds me a bit of Alexander Vinokourov in his racing style, he never dies wondering, if he sees a chance he takes a shot. Jerseys- I am not sure any of these riders can challenge for a jersey. The type of rider who is in contention for the gren jersey these days is not a pure sprinter but guys like Van Der Poels and Aliphillippe who can accumulate points in mountain stages as well so Mohoric could surprise if he wants to go for it. Top 9 Squad Riders. 47/90 Mikel Landa = 5, Wout Poels = 7, Heinrich Haussler = 6, Jack Haig = 6, Matej Mohoric = 8, Pello Bilbao = 4, Santiago Buitrago = 4, Fred Wright = 3, Damiano Caruso = 4. Team Preview- I think this team has enough ability to punch above their talent. The team has contenders in all areas. Poels is all quality and he has a good eye for an opportunity. Haussler has promised a lot since he hit the tour with the German T-Mobile team in 2004, but he has had issues, which look past him. It looks like the team is really pushing the young UK sprinter Fred Wright in the early season races. His Vuelta was very good last season and he is an up and coming sprinter who can surprise even without a lead out train. They also have an experienced staff including Australian Neil Stephens and Roman Kreuziger. Obviously Mohoric showed with his efforts last year he is a genuine talent and he can again target one day races and stage wins.

Bora Hansgrohe.
GC Tour Contenders- Obviously Jai Hindley being the defending Giro winner he is a contender, however he has been nominated for the Tour De France. That does not mean he is definitely not riding in Italy in May but it is unlikely. This team do have a very good young, future GC contender in Aleksander Vlasov. One day classics- This team is not known for hunting one day classic wins, but guys like Sam Bennett and Bob Jungels could get into a break and take their opportunity. Stage wins- As well as both Hindley and Vlasov who will target the GC jersey, there are about four riders who could seek a stage win. Sergio Higuita, is a good climber from Colombia. Patrick Konrad likes nothing more than getting into the right break away. Danny Van Poppel does not have the topline speed of the pure sprinters but he is an intelligent rider who can snag a sprint stage win. If the youngster has a bad start to the Giro he can also go after a stage to salvage something from the Giro. Jersey- Sam Bennett has shown that he can be a KOM contender. Danny Van Poppel is good enough to accumulate points in the green jersey, but to win it he needs to win three or four stages being a pure sprinter. Top 9 Squad Riders - 56/90 Jai Hindley = 10, Sam Bennett = 8, Aleksander Vlasov = 6, Danny Van Poppel = 7, Sergio Higuita = 6, Bob Jungels = 5, Patrick Conrad = 5, Emmanuel Buchmann = 5, Jordi Meeus = 4. Team Preview- This team has a lot of upside. Jai Hindley is obviously a major contender having won the Giro last year. Aleksander Vlasov is the young rider coming through who has the most excitement around him. Not yet a GC contender but he is showing all the signs from a young rider who will hit his peak at 27, 28, 29. Guys like Sam Bennett, Patrick Conrad and Bob Jungles are all contenders for wins during the season while Danny Van Poppel may not be quite as talented as van Der Poel or Aliphillippe but he can be there to take advantage if one of those guys faulters.

Cofidis.
GC Tour Contenders- This team very rarely has a GC contender and this season is no different. One day classics- I can not see any one day winning contenders but guys like Simon Geschke and Ion Izagirre can finish top 10 but they are not winning hopes. Stage wins- Always with a rider in a break away, guys like Geschke, Izagirre and Guillame Martin can convert one of those moves. The Herrada brothers are always motivated in races that are in or around Spain. David Cimolai is not quite up to the talent of the sprint stage winners but he can snag a stage win if he rides using his oppositions team to drive him to the line. Jerseys- I can not see any success here. Top 9 Squad Riders - 43/90. Ion Izagirre = 8, Simon Geschke = 6, Jose Herrada = 4, Jesus Herrada = 4, Davide Cimolai = 5, Guillame Martin = 6, Victor Lafay = 4, Piet Allegaert = 3, Max Walsched = 3. Team Preview- Always good for a few fireworks early on any stage, this team always seems to be trying hard, but never getting anywhere. Izagirre, Geschke and Martin will never die wondering. I think one of the teams problems is that they do not have a great staff. Cedric Vasseur is experienced but he is not experienced on successful teams. Benjamin Giraud also has experience but once again that experience is on non winning teams. For this team to improve they need good strategists in the staff.

EF Education.
GC Tour Contender- Richard Carapaz is clearly the protected rider for this team. He has finished on the podium at all three grand tours, and has won the Giro. His last 3 seasons have been sensational which included Olympic Road race glory in Tokyo, 3 stage wins at the Vuelta and also the KOM at the Vuelta last season. He is a genuine podium contender! Last season saw one of my favorites Esteban Chavez show signs he was getting somewhere near his best. 3rd at the start of the season in his national road race title race, and his Tour of Norway and Criterium Du Dauphine efforts were good. By the time he got to the Vuelta he was done, but I see he might be the main rider at the Giro. One day classics- No out and out genuine hopes here but riders like Simon Carr, Magnus Cort and Alberto Bettiol have shown talent to at least be top ten hopes. Stage wins- This team has enough talent that they should be expecting every rider to take an opportunity for a stage win. Chavez, Carapaz, Uran, Simon Carr are all capable of securing a mountain stage win. Magnus Cort is good for a break away opportunity while the team is expecting big things from youngster Andrea Piccolo. Jerseys- Carapaz and Chavez are contenders for the KOM if given the opportunity. Not saying he can win but if he has a good race and others do not Magnus Cort is the type of rider who can accumulate points consistently to finish top 3 in the green jersey competition. Top 9 Squad Riders - 55/90. Richard Carapaz = 10, Esteban Chavez = 7, Rigoberto Uran = 6, Simon Carr = 6, Andrey Amador = 6, Magnus Cort = 6, Andrea Piccolo = 5, Albert Bettiol = 5, Hugh Carthy = 4. Team Preview- While the grand tours are a target, they have enough talent to target one day classics, and 1 week multi stage events as well. I can see this team being a team who can have success all season long.

Groupama FDJ.
GC Tour Contenders- There is only one GC contender for this team Arnaud Gaudu. As his last 3 TDF's have seen him finish 4th last year, 11th in 2021 and 8th in 2020. The team has enough good domestiques to give him assistance in the mountains. One day classics- Stephan Kung was good last season when he finished 3rd in Paris Roubaix and 8th Amstel Gold. David Gaudu has shown he can mix it in the one day classics and that is probably why he is doing all three major classic in one week, Amstel Gold, Fleche Wallone and Liege Bastogne Liege. He can finish high up in all of those. Rudy Molard is a genuine top 10 hope as he had several good results in the one day races last season. Stage wins- Arnaud Demare is a quality sprinter and he comes off winning 3 stages at the Giro last season. Thibuat Pinot is in the veteran group now but he can get into a mountain break and hang on. Micheal Storer gets into a break and he can contend for a stage win. Quentin Pacher won a stage in the Vuelta and he can snag another stage if he is selected. Lenny Martinez is a good climber and he can truna mountain stage break into a win. Jerseys- Arnaud Gaudu could switch to KOM jersey target if he loses to much time on one of the early mountain stages to drop out of GC contention. Other than that no other contenders here. Top 9 Squad Riders - 48/90 Stefan Kung = 8, Thibaut Pinot = 4, Micheal Storer = 5, Rudy Molard = 4, Quentin Pacher = 3, Lenny Martinez = 6, Arnaud Demare = 7, David Gaudu = 8, Kevin Geniets = 3. Team Preview- I understand the team is putting all their faith in Gaudu and I understand the reasoning behind that. However while he will have the best team behind him in France in July, I am not sure he is a genuine podium finisher. Kung, Storer, Martinez and Molard good domestiques, and Pinot is okay for the early climbs on a mountain stage but with Arnaud Demare also aiming at sprint stage wins the team could be too divided to help the main guy. It looks like they mean business with the one day classic selections. I can see them getting some victories but they might just fall short at the ultimate aim in July.

Ineos Grenadiers.
GC Tour Contenders- The obvious main protected rider is Gerraint Thomas who still has the ability to podium, but the Giro might be his best chance. The other option is if Egan Bernal has fully recovered from his horrendous crash which was life threatening for a few days. He had a very light 2022 and I know he will not be back to his best 2021 form but if he has his power back he is one of the best in the peloton. One day classics- If Daniel Martinez can recapture his 2022 spring form he could surprise. Other than that Kwiatkowski and Pidcock are riders that seem to be aiming at the spring classics. Stage wins- Castroviejo is a good time trial rider but that has not usually transferred to the grand tours. Obviously most of the attention in the grand tours is with Thomas but most selected riders can attack a stage win. Elia Viviani is a genuine sprint stage contender and Martinez, Geoghegan Hart and Kwiatkowski can score a stage victory. Jerseys- I do not think this team have any genuine contenders to win a jersey but they do have top five contenders in all jerseys. Top 9 Squad Riders - 55/90. Gerraint Thomas = 10, Egan Bernal = 7, Tao Geoghegan Hart = 5, Micheal Kwiatkowski = 5, Daniel Martinez = 8, Elia Viviani = 6, Carlos Rodriguez = 6, Thomas Pidcock = 5, Pavel Sivakov = 3. Team Preview- This team is not as dominant as the Wiggins/Froome years, but they have most bases covered. Thomas and Bernal have the talent to finish on a podium. If Bernal can do that it would be one of the best comebacks in sporting history. Riders like Martinez and Kwiatkowski can give the team stage and one day classic victories. The team have two of the most promising riders in the peloton in Thomas Pidcock and Carlos Rodriguez. Young Rodriguez could be the inheriter of the Spanish leading rider in the peloton. In his first grand tour in last years Vuelta he finished in the top 20 on 13 out of 21 stages. he showed in his two time trials that he is very good in that discipline and had four top ten finishes in mountain stages. He finished seventh in the GC competition and he looks like a future contender, if not this eyar then in the very near future. Exciting times ahead!

Intermeche Circus Wanty.
GC Tour Contenders- I can not find any GC contenders among the squad. Louis Meintjes and Rein Taramae are top ten hopes if eevrything goes right. One day classics- Judging by the early selections this team will not be seeking victories in the spring. The two main hopes are Eritrea's Biniam Girmay who became the first African rider to win a classic with his win the Ghent Wavelgem last year. The other chance is Portugal's Rui Costa who is now in the veteran group but he can still pack a punch. Stage wins- there are four stage hopes here. Biniam Girmay can slip into a breakaway. Goerge Zimmerman is a smart rider who knows which break is the right one to latch onto while Meintjes can win a mountain stage. Now that his GC ambitions have past him by Rein Taraamae is not totally incapable of winning a stage. Jerseys- This team have no rider capable of accumulating points consistently so winning any jersey is unrealistic. Top 9 Squad Riders - 45/90 Biniam Girmay = 7, Rein Taraamae = 7, Adrien Pettit = 5, George Zimmerman = 5, Louis Meintjes = 7, Rui Costa = 5, Laurens Huys = 3, Loic Vliegen = 3, Gerben Thijssen = 3. Team Preview- This team is usually a one day classic contender and a borderline stage targetter win the grand tours, however judging by their selections for the spring classic, I am seeing a team who might be targeting a podium GC push in France in July. They have already named a strong team for the TDF and are yet to select the majority of their team for the Giro which combined with the fact that they have basically only got Girmay and Costa riding the spring classics, tells me that the TDF is a priority this season. Meintjes and Taaramae as stated above are top 10 contenders but with the best possible team behind them they could push for a top five or podium finish. |

Israel Premier Tech.
GC Tour Contenders- The two riders who have done well in the past in Chris Froome and Jakob Fuglsang are past their GC winning days. One day classics- There are three main hopes. South African Daryl Impey, Simon Clarke and Tom Van Asbroeck are all strong riders who can get into the right attack and take their opportunity. Stage wins- There are several hopes for a stage win in this team. Fuglsang, Micheal Woods and Nick Schultz are all capable of winning a mountain stage or in a breakaway. Giacomo Nizzolo is a good sprinter on his day and he can challenge for a early sprint stage victory obviously he will be motivated for the Giro. Jerseys- There are no riders who can consistently get points to challenge for the jerseys. If he decided to target the KOM Fuglsang could finish top five. Top 9 Squad Riders - 48/90 Simon Clarke = 8, Chris Froome = 4, Giacomo Nizzolo = 5, Micheal Woods = 6, Nick Schultz = 7, Jakob Fuglsang = 5, Rick Zabel = 3, Reto Hollenstein = 4, Daryl Impey = 6. Team Preview- While Froome and Fuglsanf gain all the spotlight Woods, Schultz and Nizzolo are genuine stage winners who can be hopes in the one day classics if the races pan out for them. Dary Impey is a top quality rider in the Stuart O'Grady, Jens Voight mould and he is a genuine hope for a stage win.

Jumbo Visma.
GC Tour Contenders- one of the few teams who have two genuine GC contenders. Primoz Roglic had a down year last year but he seems to be training well and has started the season okay so expectations for hi are high once again. When Roglic showed signs of exhaustion last season Jonas Vingegaard showed that he is absolutely capable as he is the defending TDF champion. This team can feel they are a genuine threat to win all three tours in 2023. One day classics- while Roglic is absolutely capable of winning a one day classic, it is Wort Van Aert who is the main guy in the spring for this team. Being a solid climber and good in a sprint finish, he is a marked man, who has trouble getting in breaks, but he is talented enough to still win. Tresj Benoot rode a great race in the Amstel Gold Classic to podium and he is entering te phase of his career where he should be at his best. Stage wins- which ever riders are selected for the tour can all compete for a stage win. Former two time Time Trial world champion Rohan Dennis is a chance in both ITT's, but the team also has the current TT world champion in Norway's Tobias Foss who won the title in Wollongong last year. Both Roglic and Vingegaard are mountain stage contenders, while Steven Kruijswick and Benoot can join in a mid tour break and take their chance. High expectations for at least two stage wins in each tour this season! Jerseys- Both Vingegaard and Roglic can contend for the KOM. Benoot is a rider who is in the Aliphillipe and Van Aert type, so he can grab points in the green jersey comp in sprint and mountain stages. But obviously Van Aert is the main threat here for the green jersey competition. Top 9 Squad Riders - 71/90. Wort Van Aert = 10, Jonas Vingegaard = 10, Primoz Roglic = 9, Tresj Benoot = 8, Rohan Dennis = 8, Tobias Foss = 8, Robert Gesink = 6, Sepp Kuss = 5, Steven Kruijswick = 7. Team Preview- The owners of this team have formed a formidable squad who will be in the hunt for victories all season long. Vingegaard showed last season that the grand tours do not all revolve around Roglic and it gives this team two protected riders. Roglic had a down season by his lofty standards but he is apparently training well and has started the season in good form. With two Time Trial world champions in the squad they should at least pick up one of those stages in one of the three tours. And with riders such as Kruijswick, Kuss and Gesink the domestiques for the top two guys are all quality. And then we have the headline grabber, Wort Van Aert. Now taking the mantle of strongest rider from guys like Cancellara and Gilbert, Van Aert is an allrounder who should start favorite in any tour he rides for the points competition. All in all, this is the best team in the peloton and all their riders will be marked in any race they contest!

Lotto Dstny.
GC Tour Contenders- Not much happening here. One day classics- Thomas De Gendt and Florian Vermeersch are two rouleurs who always seem to get into the right break. Stage wins- Obviously Caleb Ewan is a top level sprinter but he needs to improve his tactics in that last 300m. Andreas Kron is a definite stage contender and De Gendt is always good for a attack on at least one stage of a tour. Jersey- No contenders here. The era of pure sprinters being good bets for the green jersey are over, unless you can win four stages. Top 9 Squad Riders - 40/90. Caleb Ewan = 8, Thomas De Gendt = 6, Andreas Kron = 6, Maxim van Gils = 4, Florian Vermeersch = 4, Viktor Campenaerts = 3, Micheal Schwarzman = 3, Harry Sweeney = 3, Sebastian Grigard = 3. Team Preview- This is a developing team with good young riders but this looks a rebuilding year to me as they transition from one era to another. Two of their young riders to watch are Andreas Kron and the young sprinter Max Van Gils, who are both looking like future leaders of the team. Caleb Ewan needs some direction from a former top end sprinter (preferably one who used to race with Lotto and who is Australian and who has double his surname)on his placement and effort in the last 300m of a sprint.

Movistar.
GC Tour Contender- It all sits with Enric Mas. A top class junior cyclist, has developed into a very talented contender in the peloton. His 2022 season started with three crashes but by the time his teams home Vuelta rolled up he had fully recovered and he put in one of the best non winning ride in a grand tour I have seen. If everything goes his way this season watch out in Spain in August/September. One day classics- Two hopes here and the selections for the spring classics reinforce that Ivan Garcia Cortina and Alex Aranburu have shown signs that they are at least a top ten contender. I would be stunned if Cortina does not really attack one of the Ardennes classics. Stage wins- They have four riders who can challenge for a stage. Fernando Gaviria, Gorka Izagirre, Matteo Jorgensen are all hopes in the mountain stages. Matteo Jorgensen is a young rider who has shown the potential to either be a top 10 GC contender or a KOM contender when he matures, and I can see him being sent forward on a mountain stage just in case Mas needs him at the end. Jerseys- Ruben Guerreiro has won the KOM in the Giro and he is agood at accumulating points on a consistent basis. Top 9 Squad Riders - 40/90. Alex Aranburu = 5, Imanol Erviti = 3, Enric Mas = 9, Fernando Gaviria = 4, Ruben Guerreiro = 5, Gorka Izagirre = 5, Matteo Jorgensen = 5, Nelson Oliviera = 4. Team Preview- The new post Alejandro Valverde era has begun. With Enric Mas showing huge GC potential in the last few seasons he is the headline act. Izagirre and Guerreiro are good lieutenants and Mas will be the one to support. Matteo Jorgensen is a huge talent with huge potential but at 23 he is still short of his full maturity so the target this season should be a stage win in a grand tour, which might come in the teams home Vuelta. |

Mahoric a real gun - who is a big chance in any of the Classics that don't have major climbing towards the backend, Best descender in the game which is why he is favourite to repeat Milano Sanremo victory. Also Fred Wright is an up & comer for hilly (not mountain) stages in GC. Can sprint. Don't rate Haussler or Haigh.

Soudal Quickstep
GC Tour Contenders- No GC contenders for this team. One day classic- As with most success for this team it is all about Julian Alaphilippe and he is a huge chance in any of the classics. The team also has the current world champion in Remco Evenepoel and any rider who wins a world championships or an olympic medal knows how to ride a one day race well enough to be a one day classic contender. Stage wins- Alaphilippe again has a hope in any of the none TT & Mountain top finish stages. Riders like Fabio Jakobsen, Remco Evenepoel, Yves Lampaert and if Davide Ballerini gets selection he always makes a move in at least one satge. Jerseys- Julian Alaphilippe is the hope for the green jersey. Top 9 Squad Riders - 46/90. Julian Alaphilippe = 10, Remco Evenepoel = 8, Jan Hirt = 4, Mauro Schmid = 3, Fabio Jakobsen = 3, Yves Lampaert = 4, Kasper Asgreen = 3, Josef Cerny = 4, Davide Ballerini = 4. Team Preview- While Julian Alaphilippe is the main contender for this team, Remco Evenepoel's world championship win in Wollongong shows he is developing his ability at tactics and his ability to execute. They do not hand out world championship titles and a win and securing the rainbow jersey can give a huge boost to a riders enthusiasm, as long as they can have no crashes or other disasters.

Team Jayco Alula.
GC Tour Contender- Simon Yates is the protected rider and if he can get a little support in the mountains he is a genuine top 10 contender. One day classics- Micheal Matthews is a genuine spring classic contender. Zdenek Stybar has shown his ability in the one day classic and he can challenge if conditions suit. Stage wins- Dylan Groenwegen has already won multiple stages and he will try again as he always does. Lucas Hamilton can get into one of the breakaways if allowed to do so. Micheal Matthews is always good for an effort to chance his hand. Matteo Sobrero is an attacker a puncheur who his team must love because he always gets the sponsors name on the tv screens through his breakaway efforts. He has won a stage last year so again he can convert one of his opportunities. Jerseys- Micheal Matthews fits the bill of a modern green jersey winner and since his TDF win in the points classification in 2017, he has finished top ten many time. Van Aert and Alaphilippe are probably more talented but Matthews can work and scheme his way into contention. Top 9 Squad Riders - 47/90. Simon Yates = 9, Alessandro DeMarchi = 4, Dylan Groenewegen = 6, Lucas Hamilton = 5, Micheal Matthews = 8, Zdenek Stybar = 4, Matteo Sobrero = 4, Lukas Postleberger = 3, Luke Durbridge = 4. Team Preview- The Australian registered team has two targets for the grand tours. Simon Yates can finish top five in the GC classification if everything goes right for him including good time trials. Micheal Matthews is in the Van Aert, Alaphilippe, Gilbert, Cancellara mould who can win points in sprint stages as well as mountain stages as well. There are also stage win targets and also expectations for the one day classics.

Trek Segafredo.
GC Tour Contenders- Baulke Mollema is the protected rider, but it looks to my eye as though his time to challenge for an overall win at a tour has passed him by. I am seeing a guy who should target the 1 week multi stage races such as Criterium de dauphine and Tour of Catalunya etc. One day classics- Two main hopes here. Mads Pedersen is a very smart one day rider who can isolate the right break to join. Being a former world champion and a classic winner, he is a threat in the spring. Jasper Stuyven has been close in the past and he has said that he is targeting the Ardennes classics. Stage wins- With no GC contender a rider like Mollema can switch to target a mountain stage victory. Jerseys- Guilio Ciccone has developed into a Richard Virenque (hopefully not exactly like the frenchman), type who can climb well and also get enough points in the semi mountain stages, especially early in the tours and grab a win or two later on. A challenger for the KOM jersey. Top 9 Squad Riders - 39/90. Bauke Mollema = 7, Guilio Ciccone = 5, Juan Pedro Lopez = 6, Jasper Stuyven = 5, Dario Cataldo = 3, Tony Gallopin = 3, Quinn Simmons = 3, Alex Kursch = 2, Toms Skiijins = 2, Julien Bernard = 3. Team Preview- Not much happening here. Mollema has developed into a consistent 8th to 15th GC finisher. He is a good climber so if he feels okay on the morning of a mountain stage he should go for the stage win. Guilio ciccone is a shrewd climber who can accumulate points consistently over a 21 stage tour. Quinn Simmons is a talented US climber who has shown good potential but at 21 he might be just used in the week long races as he has not been selected yet for either the Giro or France in July.

UAE Team Emirates.
GC Tour Contenders- No doubt about the main rider here, one Tadej Pogacar. Contender in all categories. One day classics- Not sure here. Judging by the selection for the classics I am not expecting much from this team in the classics. Judging by the selections I would give Tim Wellens a hope as he loves the Ardennes classics of the Liege Bastogne Liege, Fleche Wallone, Paris Roubaix and Amstel Gold. He has also finished top ten at the Strade Bianche numerous times. Stage wins- If Pogacar was not the main aim for the tours this team would have several stage winning riders. Riders like Yates, Majka, Wellens, Soler and Bennett are all previous stage winners and if they were not riding to protect the GC standing of Pogacar they could win stages again. Jerseys- Again if the main man was not there this would be a target. Guys like Yates, Soler and Majka could challenge for the KOM. With him being selected for the Giro Australia's Jay Vine can challenge for a KOM jersey. Top 9 Squad Riders - 59/90. Tadej Pogacar = 10, Matteo trentin = 7, Marc Soler = 6, Diego Ulissi = 4, Adam Yates = 8, Jay Vine = 6, Brandon McNulty = 4, Rafal Majka = 6, George Bennett = 8. Team Preview- Obviously this teams season revolves around Pogacar as he is a great all round rider. Having said that if something happens and his chances are gone, there is plenty to look forward to. Yates, Soler and Trentin are all stage hopes. Bennett can also grab stages if allowed while Jay Vine can challenge for a KOM in the Giro with no Pogacar in the team. Plenty of options for wis all season.

Your doing well Voyager. Like a well oiled machine
I will reply to all your teams - just need to mull over them a bit. I stopped at Bora because you left out one of my real favourites - Lennard Kamna. Very good German rider who is an excellent time trialist who can also climb. Not quite GC level climber - however not far off it. Excellent mountain breakaway option deep into the Tours assuming they are non-competitive in the GC. Very solid betting opinion as you know he will make the break either starting on hill or flat. I also think you meant Sam Bennett was a points contender - not the KOM. He will never win a polka dot.

Just a few general thoughts at this point of the racing ahead
MVP & WVA are so dominant in the one day format. They are just so balanced with no weaknesses. Realistically it is those 2 plus maybe Alaphilippe & maybe the Pog with few other real chances. Their biggest danger is paying too much attention to each other & allowing a move that not even their abilities can overcome. In the 3 big GC's its not all that different - & i will refer mainly to TDF chances here. Really is a 2 horse race with The Pog & Vinnegaard. Roglic will be kept for the Giro / Vuelta i think & should dominate them - he just cant match the other two in one or two of the big days of the TDF - & that's all it takes. Cant see the Thomas's , Yates , Landas, Superman et al being any closer to those 3 overall in the GC's than the past few years. I take your point re Mas - he doesn't have to improve much to be a danger. Obviously Remco is the other one we need to throw in. He is being groomed for the TDF next year & will probably be Roglic main dander in the Giro. He is also a magnificent talent - just not 100% sure he wont give up some time on a big mountain stage. The game is relentless. He is $2.20 in the Giro - so a lot of people think he will handle it. Probably on his ability in time trialling to get his time (mind you Roglic is no slouch there either) & then be able to maintain it So this means within a week or so the writing will be on the wall as to GC outcomes in pretty well all the Tours - allowing exciting breakaway opportunities to Teams hungry to get a result. The thing is - The Pogs team UAE & even Roglic / Vinegaard Jumbo never want to give a stage up. They always want to control the break & rack up stage wins as well. Greedy buggers. Both teams are so strong they start setting up stage wins for the others to reward their domestique work. Also Voyager i signed up to GCN+ last year - $70 / year. Just re-subscribed. Gives you pretty well all the Classics & other Tours including the big 3. Sometimes live cross half way through - & some geo restrictions in place (usually when its on SBS - so no issue). I often watch it the next day as if it is live - works well. So all races available on demand. Also some good previews. Well run program.

Cant get too excited about Van Poppel - always finds a few better. Cant see the classics getting a result either - unless Bennett can get to the finish in a bunch sprint in the easier classic finales (which are few & far between) |

But here's the bigger question: does 11 mount his bike from the left side, right side, or onto the very centre from the rear?
