One of the architects of the proposed Indigenous Voice to parliament has been named the 2023 Senior Australian of the Year.

Professor Tom Calma AO has been recognised for his work as a respected human rights and social justice campaigner.

The Canberra-based, Kungarakan Elder has worked for more than 45 years at local, community, state and international levels championing the rights, responsibilities, and welfare of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Professor Calma’s call for Australia to address the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non- Indigenous peoples was the catalyst for the Close the Gap Campaign.

He was instrumental in establishing the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples; has led the Tackling Indigenous Smoking program; co-chaired Reconciliation Australia for over a decade; and co-led the co-design of the Voice to parliament proposal.

Currently Chancellor of the University of Canberra, the 69-year-old was the first Indigenous Australian inducted as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.

Mr Calma delivered a powerful speech on the upcoming referendum on the voice, and a warning to one group of Australians in particular.

“Australians have only ever known a system where Indigenous peoples are treated as problems to be solved, not as partners and active participants in determining their destiny.

“Australians have only ever known a system of consistent policy failure and poor outcomes for first nations peoples,” he said.

The academic said recent polling had revealed Australians were overwhelmingly in support of recognition for Indigenous people, but warned senior Australians were the most likely to be “targeted” by misinformation.

“You are the demographic being targeted with myths and misinformation by pundits who are either ill-informed or who have malicious intent regarding The Voice,” he said.

Mr Calma said the voice was “reasonable” and did not give Indigenous Australians special rights.

Any chance Mr Calma is looking for an opening to get a guernsey if The Voice gets up ?

Professor Calma was the co-author of the Langton-Calma Indigenous voice co-design report.

It is in parliament cabinet archives for everyone(even Spud) to read.

As it should be. That is the undermining Dutton is doing. Forcing Albo to set out the rules that the Voice committees are being put in place to do, so he can say that Indigenous people aren't actually getting a voice, they are being dictated to by Labor.

I did notice his wife isn't Aboriginal. Now, who was pointing out about prominent Indigenous persons not marrying within the culture?

 Hmmmm.

I’ve got 2 family members who have, in the past, received a gong.

Very proud of both but as I grow older, more cynical and less patriotic I must confess to not really paying much attention to who  gets them

 Ditto with my family.

But one of them always knew he would get a gong, one day.

Boasted about it. Also about one day becoming a millionaire. He succeeded, but is also a dead bore.

Do they really think it makes them any more special?

I'm playing freecell, while keeping an eye on the Randwick beach cams. The beaches are chockers already.

Not in my case. My brother was humbled & embarrassed but very appreciative. A meeting with him would result in anyone having zero idea of his achievements

Yeah plenty of melanomas setting themselves up for later life. My daughter got burned while playing beach volleyball at Maroubra and Bondi recently, I tried telling her that sunscreen does not block out all the suns rays, it only partially does the job and you have to re apply more and more at shorter intervals the longer you are out there. Of course this information is completely lost on teens and they have to go learn for themselves. Enter one sunburnt teen who was complaining why am I burnt when I put sun screen on ? and now she is peeling, but at least she knows now that if she goes out, she has to wear a wide brimmed hat and shirt or suffer.

I spent my whole life in the ocean as a kid teen and young adult surfing everyday, wearing little but zinc on my nose and I am paying the price now, I have to see the skin specialist every 6 months, I have more scars and skin ops than a prisoner in San Quentin.

State winners of 2023 Young Australian of the Year
ACT: a Ghanaian man
QLD : a Torres Strait Islander woman
TAS : a Muslim woman
SA: a male refugee from Kenya
VIC: a Victorian man who identifies as an aboriginal
NT : a Tiwi Islander
WA : Athlete Peter Bol.. born in Sudan
NSW: a white female environmentalist

Just look- only one white person, a woman, among the eight winners and no fewer than three Aborigines and Torres Strait islanders, yet some consider Australia a racist country, or could it be reverse racism with not one white male ?

I thought exactly the same as you Thumbs Up
Never heard of her but she writes books about body image ?? Confused  Oh Please.  Surely there are much more deserving people in this country, heros even, who we could be holding up to the kids as great examples of doing good things.  The award is turning into a political joke.  I honestly thought , even in her category, there were more deserving of the award.
As to sun baking.  Seeing them all spread out on the beaches willingly getting melanoma disgusts me.  I was never one for sun baking , being fair and burning to a crisp at the drop of a hat, but we didnt have the information about skin cancer back then that they do now. I am always getting spots cut off my face, arms and backs of hands, from my riding days.
Wonder how many will drown today ?
animals before people.
