I always loved the old Duke of Norfolk Stks, and with a few tweaks the now Andrew Ramsden Stks has become a highly anticipated race.

Since becoming a ballot free race for the Melb Cup, the event has yielded Steel Prince (2019) & Oceanex (2020), who both performed admirably in the Melb Cup finishing 9th & 11th respectively.

Noms are out tomorrow, but who do we think are the main contenders for the ‘golden ticket’ into the 2021 Cup?

We should get Persan & Mohican Heights coming out of the William Newton Hcp.

From the Warrnambool Cup, probably Moonlight Maid, Heart of Puissance, South Pacific & maybe Constantinople.

Realm of Flowers has been kept in work specifically for the event.

Danny O’Brien might have Wyclif running after his Port Adelaide Cup win a few weeks ago

And subject to stewards, we may see the controversial Nickajack Cave.

Any chance of Carif coming south for this after his good Gosford Cup run yesterday?

Anyways, it should be another exciting edition.  Look forward to seeing entries tomorrow & final field on Weds.

Persan Performed below market expectations. Apprentice Matthew Cartwright could offer no explanation for the performance. A post?race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the stable.
Does anyone know how/wher to find follow up results or do we just assume once we see them entered? Confused

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Plenty of horses perform below expectations.  Maybe the jump from 2000 to 2600m was a factor amongst any number of other possibilities.  However prior has been honest as since his first start so see no reason why stewards need to further follow up with the stable other than review post-race bloods and the like.

Certainly the jock gave him every chance so no issue there.

"The proof of the pudding will be in the eating" as it's said, which in this case will presumably be in the Ramsden.  Of course if he goes great there'll be questions, as indeed there'll be if he goes ordinary.

Thanks Shawy, how could I forget the St Leger winner!  Been following him since his MV run in Feb & been on him most starts since.

Ciaron certainly has a strong hand in this race with Persan, Grand Promenade & Through Irish Eyes.  Maybe even South Pacific, who got polaxed at a crucial stage at Warrnambool Cup but still ran in ok for 4th.

Wonder if Runaway Train might be an entry ?

Might be too soon for her but she is a promising stayer.

Given she just broke her maiden, way too soon for a Ramsden tilt.

But Clayton & Jamie have her entered for a 2050m race at Mornington on Tuesday.

Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

This is a listed race granted with a fantastic end prize up for grabs and the field could be better however it is still a lovely little race over a proper racing distance.

It has a Gordon Stakes and Great Voltigeur runner up both superb British group 2s.

It has a Melbourne Cup 5th placegetter.

It has an Oaks winner.

It has a VRC St Leger winner.

It has an Oaks and St Leger runner up.

IN fact it has 2 Oaks runners up.

It has 3 very promising older stayers going through their grades.

And it has Realm Of Flowers.

There is nothing embarrassing about this field.

By world racing standards - the field is poor.  Stop thinking local and start thinking global.

Would have thought it's just about what you'd expect for a race like this half-way through May.

The 2020 edition was hardly stellar.

Believe you'd get a better field were it run a fortnight or so before the Sydney Cup.

It is perfectly placed and does it's job where it is.

The Sydney Cup winner is probably the only horse who is not in it that should really be in the race.

Selino won the Sydney Cup but has probably not done enough to be assured of a Melbourne Cup start. He could have done that here.

That said Waller having been an "independent" looking into the imports protocols probably did his job making it very hard for the fly in fly outs to come down here.

As such Selino with 105 as a rising 6yo might just scrape in.

Believe at least five and maybe six of the Sydney Cup starters would've started in the Ramsden had it been run as suggested above.  Though that's only opinion.

If Nickajack Cave had been fit to line up here he should have given this field a spanking!

What a debacle.

Dont think we need to be thinking 'global' about a Listed race in mid May Jamal. Not a bad field really (Persan,Miami Bound, Realm of Flowers, Through Irish Eyes.)  Small field size is slightly disappointing but then again its double the size of the feature Yorkshire Cup field this week.

I'm looking forward to the contest.
