Couldn't see Rodrigo Diaz getting into a Cup off that effort. Although the social media campaign has been impressive

Do they even bother bringing Rodrigo Diaz down here after that failure?

He’ll get allocated the 50kg limit weight next week & will be so far down the order of entry for the Melb Cup that he’d be virtually zero chance of getting a run.

Unless they’re planning a MV Cup or Bendigo Cup run between now & the Cup.  But allowing for flights & quarantine is there actually time for horses running at Doncaster this weekend to get a flight & have a lead up run here?

The Melbourne Cup aspirations of Rodrigo Diaz have taken a further blow with an underwhelming fourth-placed finish of six starters in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup (3600m) on Friday.

Stradivarius ($1.35 favourite) cruised to victory in the Doncaster Cup under Frankie Dettori, winning the race for a second time by 2.5 lengths from Alerta Roja ($17) and Nayef Road ($11).

Rodrigo Diaz ($6.50) stalked Stradivarius throughout until the 400-metre mark but offered little over the concluding stages, finishing 9.75 lengths behind Europe's champion stayer.

The performance now raises possible concerns that Rodrigo Diaz may have not done enough to secure direct entry into the Melbourne Cup field

Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter will release weights for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups on Tuesday.

Australian Bloodstock acquired a half-share of Rodrigo Diaz ahead of him passing the first ballot clause when runner-up to Hukum in the G3 Geoffrey Freer (2671m) at Newbury on August 14.

Ideally, Rodrigo Diaz would have entered pre-export quarantine at Newmarket on Thursday but owing to complications of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff of trainer David Simcock were unable to gain flights from the UK to Melbourne to coincide with the galloper's arrival.

Connections scrapped plans to fly on the first shipment and deferred travel for the second in the hope of arranging suitable flights for staff in time.

Horses who travel on the second shipment and intend to race in the Melbourne Cup are not permitted to have a lead-up start prior to Flemington's showpiece event.

Connections will now await feedback from Simcock, and no doubt Carpenter's all-important discretionary weight allocation, ahead of any decision to commit for a Melbourne trip.

Sir Lucan's another traveller that shouldn't run off his St Leger effort

Being scrubbed up at the 2500m mark & wilted to finish 8th beaten over 13 lens.  Doesn’t bode well for running 3200m out.

I think he’d still be travelling down given he’s been jointly bought by Gai Waterhouse & Ozzie Kehir.  But given he’s only a Listed winner in UK you’d think he’ll get 50kgs & with no lead up run permitted there would seem to be zero chance of him making the Cup field.

Hi shawy,

According to the article that speedingaway posted, horses on the 2nd shipment are not permitted to have a start locally before the Cup.

Pretty sure that any horses competing at Doncaster or The Curragh this weekend are slated to be on that 2nd flight.

In saying that I can’t see him measuring up to a Cup (this year at least) if he somehow does make the field.
Are they still having the Sandown Cup 3200m at Caulfield this year? That could be a suitable race to try him in.

How the hell did Beauden get 53.5? I had to have a look to see if it was an overseas horse. Everything weighted above it has been thrown in.

Certainly does appear harsh Kav.

But then again we can't have your lot over the ditch getting in well at the weights.  Big smile

They could have given Beauden an old-fashioned 47.5kg and he still would struggle to get into the top half of the field!

I just had a look over his form. He is a 7yo and never been beyond 2200m. In fact it wasn't until his 5yo year that he was tried beyond 1600m.

He does look suited as being able to just about compete with a top half Caulfield Cup position (maybe 9th if half the field take a wrong turn) but he isn't nominated.

He is by Bullbars out of a Zeditave mare out of a Bletchingly grand dam . He'll be gasping for air by the time the hit the straight at Flemington!

And that's the problem with the minimum weight being raised to 50kg. A horse may not even deserve 50kg - it may deserve 47kg for example but the handicapper can't go lower then the minimum weight

Hang on a minute, he isnt even nominated for any of the Cups. Something must be amiss? They have taken the easier option and have him nominated for the G1 Metropolitan

Will be interesting to see when/where he kicks off his campaign.
Whilst he doesn’t hold a Melb Cup entry anymore, noticed that Weekender is resuming in the Coleraine Cup 1800m today

No kindness for the Sydney Cup winner?

I thought he ran well with the 58 kilos and he meets them all better at the weights in a months time.
