Thanks Second Chance & Shawy for the update on Ashrun.

Here’s hoping he recuperates & gets back to the track in 2022.

Gold Trip was a very close up 4th in The Ark. Obviously oozes class and will not be missed at the weights but not sure he will get 3200m?

A look at the late European raiders

Tuesday's release of late nominations for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and Cox Plate included four foreign-based horses not previously listed in any other spring features.

Below is a backgrounder on each of the late entries ahead of the 2021 Melbourne Spring Carnival.

(NB: Odds quoted are from Sportsbet and are correct at time of publication).

CADILLAC (7: 3-1-0)

Trainer: Jessica Harrington

Entered: Cox Plate ($34)

Comment: Cadillac is a lightly raced three-year-old colt trained by Jessica Harrington who showed tremendous promise early in his career but has fallen short of the mark at the elite level multiple times thus far. The Group 2-winning juvenile started this year with a narrow win ahead of Dawn Patrol and True Self in the G3 International Stakes (2012m) at the Curragh on June 26. Cadillac, while conceding age and experience, carried less weight than Dawn Patrol and True Self, who had excuses in defeat. The son of Lope De Vega was among the leading contenders for the US$1 million G1 Saratoga Derby (1900m) last Saturday but finished ninth of 11 starters, beaten eight lengths by State Of Rest as a $5.50 chance. Harrington believed the track, officially rated 'firm', was the reason behind the poor run as he didn't let down on the quick surface and requires a little give in the ground to show his best. Melbourne in spring therefore may not be the most suitable destination for Cadillac, with Harrington yet to have a runner during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Harrington trained Lucky Vega, another quality son of Lope De Vega, who was retired to stud in Australia by Yulong Investments in June

GLYCON (9: 5-1-0)

Trainer: Jean-Claude Rouget

Entered: Caulfield Cup ($41), Cox Plate ($61), Melbourne Cup ($41)

Comment: Akin to customers rushing to buy toilet paper shortly after a COVID-19 lockdown has been announced, Australian racehorse owners have shown plenty of enthusiasm to buy a horse who has won the G3 Prix de Reux (2500m). Tres Blue (2013), Loresho (2015), Ventura Storm (2016), Tiberian (2017), Finche (2018) and Ashrun (2019) are all Prix de Reux winners who had Australian names added to their ownership later in their career. Other recent winners Americain (2011), Gatewood (2014) and Skyward (2020) were already raced by Australian interests at the time of their success. Glycon was the latest winner of the race at Deauville last Sunday at his first attempt beyond 2000 metres, scoring by two lengths from G1 Deutsches Derby (2400m) runner-up and beaten favourite Alter Adler. Four of Glycon's wins have been on rain-affected ground but his only start on good ground resulted in G3 success at Longchamp, showing nice acceleration from his rearward position over 2000m. Rouget is yet to have a runner in Melbourne during spring that we can recall and it would hugely surprise if he sought to send Glycon to Melbourne. It's considerably more probable that Glycon's owner/breeder Andreas Putsch, who originally owned 2016 Cox Plate fourth placegetter Vadamos before selling a half-share to Winx's breeder John Camilleri, has been approached by an Australian consortium and the late-entry payment has been made in case of sale, or as we may cheekily suggest consistent with our analogy, a 'panic buy'.

SIR LUCAN (6: 2-1-0)

Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Entered: Melbourne Cup ($26)

Comment: Sir Dragonet's brother Sir Lucan is poised to be acquired by connections of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, with the sale yet to be completed on the Northern Hemisphere three-year-old. Sir Lucan raced three times last year as a juvenile for Aidan O'Brien, ending the campaign with a maiden win over the mile at Cork on soft ground. He got back and was safely held in eighth first-up this year in the G3 Classic Trial (2002m) at Sandown on April 23, when the first four placegetters cleared out from the rest of the field and subsequently performed with distinction. Sir Lucan beat effectively his only rival, stablemate Wordsworth, in a 2615-metre Listed event at Navan on May 15 before finishing runner-up to OTI Racing's Ottoman Emperor in the G3 Gordon Stakes (2414m) during Glorious Goodwood last month on soft ground. The Gordon Stakes is a historically strong race and while not wishing to discredit Sir Lucan's swooping performance too significantly, some market leaders didn't show their best in the race. Sir Lucan sweated freely before the Gordon Stakes, has reportedly behaved similarly earlier in his career, and looks far from the finished product. However, it's evident that Sir Lucan has the same fondness for rain-affected ground as his Cox Plate-winning sibling. And just like Sir Dragonet, who debuted as a three-year-old and ran in the G1 St Leger (2921m) at Doncaster at his fifth start, Sir Lucan is expected to contest the St Leger before a possible Melbourne Cup appearance.

STATE OF REST (8: 2-1-2)

Trainer: Joseph O'Brien

Entered: Cox Plate ($41)

Comment: State Of Rest is a Starspangledbanner colt who was a two-year-old maiden winner on debut early in the season over 1200m and has continually displayed a fondness for dry ground during his career, which included his best two-year-old performance when third in the G2 Champagne Stakes (1408m) at Doncaster. State Of Rest resumed this year by finishing half a length behind Fourhometwo in a Listed race at the Curragh on the Irish Derby day undercard on an officially rated good surface. Fourhometwo has since been purchased by the same ownership group as Zaaki and will be trained by Annabel Neasham. State Of Rest then won his second race last Saturday in the US$1m G1 Saratoga Derby (1900m) - a race only added to the calendar a few years ago - as a $21 outsider on firm ground. Perhaps some attempts will be made by connections to send State Of Rest for the Cox Plate as we don't foresee him measuring up to G1 company in Europe. His Australian-influenced pedigree may entice his owners to chase top-level success abroad, similar to what O'Brien did with 2014 Cox Plate winner Adelaide, who notched his only other G1 success in the Secretariat Stakes (2000m) at Arlington three months before winning The Valley's showpiece event.

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Twilight Payment returned to the winners' enclosure for the first time since last year's Melbourne Cup with a spirited performance in the €50,000 Irish St Leger Trial (2816m) at the Curragh on Friday.

Declan McDonogh settled Twilight Payment in the box-seat and when the leaders surrendered their advantage at the 700-metre mark, Twilight Payment found himself in the lead.

The Joseph O'Brien-trained Twilight Payment ($6) maintained his advantage thereafter, holding off Princess Zoe ($4.30) by 1.75 lengths to claim his eighth victory in stakes company.

“He’s a good old stager. I think he’s won it when Declan sent him on turning in and he’s got two lengths on them," O'Brien's assistant trainer Brendan Powell told Racing TV.

“I thought Princess Zoe might pick him up but he’s some hard horse to pass. He’s so tough.

“Declan said he felt great going to the start and that’s the first time since he rode him last year that he’s got that sort of feel off him.

“He’s shown that he’s trained on and seems like the horse of old.”

Connections of Twilight Payment will consider an Australian trip for their Northern Hemisphere eight-year-old with the $5m G1 Carlton Draught Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 16 likely to be on his agenda ahead of the $8m G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 2.

Twilight Payment is a $21 chance to win consecutive Melbourne Cups with the locally-trained pair of Incentivise ($11) and Realm of Flowers ($13) at the top of betting.

The Melbourne Cup quest of trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott can officially begin after finalising a deal with Coolmore to secure international contender Sir Lucan.

Sir Lucan, the brother of last year’s Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet, emerged as a surprise late entry for the Cup last week, pending the necessary veterinary checks needed to complete the transaction.

A Listed winner in Ireland for trainer Aidan O’Brien, Sir Lucan will tackle the Group Two Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on Wednesday (AEST), before a shot at the Group One St Leger at Doncaster on September 11.

“The path we’re on at present is to target the St Leger and then come over,” Bott said.

“But in horse racing things evolve.”

Sir Lucan is $26 in TAB‘s all in Melbourne Cup market.

Waterhouse famously won the 2013 Melbourne Cup with another former international galloper, Fiorente.

The legendary trainer and Order of Australia Medal recipient, who formed a partnership with Bott in 2016, has not saddled up a Cup starter since 2018.

Sir Lucan, a lightly-raced son of Camelot set for the second shipment of international arrivals on October 12, looks set to end the Waterhouse-Bott drought.

Connections have until September 20 to complete the contentious pre-travel scintigraphy and MRI/CT imaging of distal limbs (lower legs).

Sir Lucan is one of 17 internationals nominated for the Cup, including Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned equal $15 second favourites Dawn Patrol and defending champion Twilight Payment.

Australian-bred Incentivise remains the firm $11 TAB favourite.

“There was talk it might be a bit quieter (internationals entries) early days,” Bott said.

“It’s a race that people still really want to win and with the levels of prizemoney on offer people aren’t going to give up on it that easily.”

Sir Lucan‘s pedigree through star Coolmore stallion Camelot and Sir Dragonet’s success in Australia the past 10 months was the catalyst for Waterhouse and Bott to source the progressive three-year-old colt.

“Every little bit of risk you can take out, or any factors you can put in your favour, we look for,” Bott said.

“It’s definitely comforting having that pedigree behind you, knowing he’s by a stallion that’s been hugely successful here but also a very close relation to a horse that has done very well.

“(Sir Lucan) looks to be continuing to improve, has run some very high-rated races … proven he can stay.

“Ultimately, we thought they were figures that would see him develop into an ideal Melbourne Cup prospect, particularly this year.”

Spanish Mission ran in the G2 Lonsdale Cup (3200m), Stradivarius won. It was a tight finish, both horses going hammer and tongs. Thats his last race in England. He will go into quarantine and head to Australia for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

Currently $41 for the win and $8.50 for the place on Sportsbet for the Melbourne Cup. Might be worth having a few dollars each way.

Spanish Mission is now $13 fixed on the tab for the Cup.  Just watched the replay & that was a very stirring finish.  Old Stradivarius might be past his best but he’s still got the heart to fight out a finish.

Spanish Mission makes for an interesting Cup runner.  As a multiple G2 winner & G1 placegetter will be curious to see what weight he gets allocated

Glad I got on at $41, just a few dollars each way. Weight will be interesting. 55kg ton56kg maybe? Maybe even 57kg.

I notice that the Ebor Hcp winner last night is a Melb Cup entrant - Sonnyboyliston.

Reading UK reports sounds like he’s more likely to head to the Irish St Leger unless an Australian syndicate try to buy their way to a Melb Cup runner with a big $$ offer to current connections.

Unstoppable Murtagh wants to kick Aussie butts with Ebor hero Sonnyboyliston

As he soaked up the rain and acclaim in York's winner's enclosure, Johnny Murtagh revealed he finds it hard to put into words how he feels when landing a major prize as a trainer. For the man who seems able to do everything, that wonderful but inexplicable feeling is becoming ever more common.

This time he was celebrating the long-planned success of Sonnyboyliston in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor, a race Murtagh has now conquered twice in his new role having found it consistently elusive during his years as one of Flat racing's most brilliant jockeys.

The jack and master of all trades also regularly dazzles as a pundit for ITV, whose viewers saw Ben Coen drive the Irish challenger to a thrilling head defeat of Quickthorn, after which the cock-a-hoop trainer looked straight into a television camera before shouting: "I love this game!"

Members of the Kildare Racing Club may have been missing from the Knavesmire, but they no doubt also love Murtagh. The club could by now have sold the Melbourne Cup entry to local owners, but Murtagh wanted to delay any deal, believing the potential price tag could rise after the four-year-old had run in Europe's most valuable Flat handicap. He was absolutely right.

The Melbourne Cup at Flemington – where Murtagh's 2014 Ebor winner Mutual Regard finished 14th that year – beckons for the horse named after a world heavyweight champion boxer. Before that, there is set to be a tilt at the Irish St Leger, to be run 24 hours after stable companion Ottoman Empire contests the original version of the Classic at Doncaster. Mirann, who finished 15th for Murtagh, will continue his career in Australia.

"It's a great day," said the master of Fox Covert Stables. "I thought at the beginning of the year he could end up in the Ebor. The race has been in our minds for a long time. Things like that don't always work out. Thankfully, this one did – by a head.

"To win a race like the Ebor is special. When we won it for the first time it was a bit of a surprise. Today we came with two chances, so it's good to have got the job done.

"It's been a great year because we've gone from winning at Royal Ascot to Goodwood to here. It's one of those years when things are snowballing very well."

Sky Bet Ebor: full result and race replay

Asked to sum up his emotions through the closing stages, Murtagh added: "I can't explain the feeling. It's that feeling you get when you pass the line as a jockey, but as a trainer it lasts a bit longer and probably means a bit more. It's a whole different experience – and it's nice to get used to it."

Also becoming accustomed to magic moments is the 19-year-old Coen, who has shared with Murtagh the victories at Ascot, Goodwood and now York.

"It's an unbelievable day," said Coen, whose exertions took such a toll he did not come out to receive his prize. "It was a big relief when we passed the line. I don't think I've ever pushed a horse so hard. This is a race everyone wants to win. I'm going to be pinching myself for a while."

Murtagh was full of praise for Coen – "whenever he gets on a good horse for me he produces the goods" – and also his head girl Valerie Keatley, who was here with the winner and earlier this year received the Racing Excellence Award at Ireland's Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards. A particularly iconic trophy is now in Murtagh's mind.

"A few people have been looking at him for the Melbourne Cup," he said of the Ebor hero. "There have already been offers and a few deals were close, but I thought he would run well today so I was keen to keep him. The offers will have to be big now!"

'Paddy Power introduced him at 16-1 for the Melbourne Cup – that's very fair'

Murtagh continued: "I was an apprentice in Australia and really enjoyed my time there. I'm always sl*gging my Aussie friends, telling them I put them on the map with Choisir and Starspangledbanner.

"I would have loved to win the Melbourne Cup as a jockey, but I didn't manage it. To go back and win it as a trainer would be really special. I would love to go down there and kick those Aussie butts!"

Murtagh would probably be incredibly good at the butt-kicking, too.

Great job.

There is not much incentive for Incentivise to win on Saturday.

Great work speedingaway!

Well the weights will be out Tues 14th Sept, so will be interesting to compare back to your list.  And get an official Order of Entry listing.

I think you did a great job speeding Thumbs Up

I think your evaluation of the classic winners from last season, will be more realistic than his highness Carpenter, so let us see how the VRC's untouchable one, goes on Tuesday.

Using the ratings those weights look correct, however I am interested to see if Young Werther gets the same weight as Johnny Get Angry or if Kukeracha gets 50 kilos, as I actually think he could be a rare cup runner for Waller, a 4yo who has won a classic and who has started his prep off in great form.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

I'm tipping he mightn't kick off his campaign anywhere.

But if he hopefully does, am fairly sure he'll resume on, er, a weekend.  Tongue

Imagine Collette vs the great mare on a bog track 3200m in a Melbourne Cup. One begins to salivate over the prospect.....Smile

Would be even more salivating in the Caulfield Cup in my not so humble opinion.
