As far as group winners and "ratings" it is not a great race but I actually think it is quite a good race.

It is not all Tralee Rose.

Tralee Rose could run 4000m and still win this by 10 lengths.

Looking at this field you would have to wonder whether another downgrade is on the cards in the near future. I mean, the top weight of a group 2 handicap rated 97 is not good.

A downgrade would be totally counter productive in trying to get the breeding industry to breed homegrown stayers

Good Idea can never seem to secure a nice run in the race. Always posted wide our pressuring the leader. Would love to see what it could do with a decent sit.

I'm surprised our Kiwi friends never sniffed this race out as in years gone by , the dour type that handles all ground that could be a travelling mate for a jumper or two which is not far off , their probably travelling " too well " . Smile

That may be true but if the race continues to rate so poorly then what other option is there? They aren’t given these classifications in the hope they help encourage breeding, they are given for maintaining a particular rating over a period of time.

I thought Racing SA announced a round of prize money upgrades for feature races??

At $300,000 the 2021 Adelaide Cup is a down from the $400,000 on offer last year.

In fact the 2021 prizemoney is exactly the same as what was on offer when Our Pompeii won his 2nd Adelaide Cup in 1994....27 years ago!!!

This year's field isn't strong...it hasn't been a strong race for a while but I do like a 3200m contest, I wish there were more 3200m races in Australia. As some others have said - is a downgrade on the cards for this time-honoured race? I hope not but what choice do the pattern committee have? Does an injection of prize money seem like a good idea?

Speaking of the Auckland Cup. Not many Australian-trained horses head over for that race which is understandable as the Adelaide Cup is on and then the Sydney Cup in April.

My data shows that the last Australian-trained horse to run in the Auckland Cup was SOUND in 2020 where he finished 2nd. Before that was Venguer Masque in 2019 and he finished 5th.  See link below to a recent article, Sound is going to run in the Auckland Cup again.

I know I'm going off track here and I apologise for that, but the last Australian-trained horse to win a 3200m Group race outside Australia was the Anthony Cummings trained ZAVITE in the 2010 Group 1 Auckland Cup, ridden by Damien Oliver.

There are more Group sprint races in Melbourne up to and including Turnbull Stakes Day than there are 3200m Group races over the entire season, nation wide, says a lot.

The Adelaide Cup should move to the main SA Carnival, would be a perfect race for April/May but the Government won't listen because they don't want to lose the public holiday.

The cup is held on the second Monday of March since March 2006. Before 2006 it was held in May. It was first run in 1864, just three years after the Melbourne Cup commenced. The day received public holiday status in 1973 and became a major social event in South Australia.[7] In the decade since the move of the Adelaide Cup to March, attendance has fallen to a third of previous levels, seeing 10,500 people trackside in 2015. This is due to use of the public holiday by other "Mad March" events (the Adelaide Festival of the Arts, the associated Fringe Festival, the WOMAD world music festival, a touring car race the weekend prior). Thoroughbred Racing SA and the South Australian Jockey Club wish to move the race and its associated public holiday out of March. However the South Australian government Minister for Racing said "We can't be at the whim of a racing club that wants to dictate when the public holiday is going to be" and suggests if the race be moved again then it be held on a Saturday.[8]

Afros - you're right. Also, Australian racing has become obssessed with speed.

Do we need more group races over 2 miles for a nation whose trainers are incapable of training them?

We have the Melbourne Cup and Sandown Cup in the spring just 2 weeks apart.

Then in the Summer/Autumn in quick time we have the Adelaide Cup, Sydney Cup, 2800m Andrew Ramsden and finish the season with the 3200m Brisbane Cup.

Not sure England or Japan have more than this ?

5 3200m cups seems quite enough although would be nice if Perth also reverted back to 2 miles.

Djebel - you do realise Australian racing had trainers who could actually train stayers? Surely you realise this? It hasn't always been like this. Things can change.....can change always happen which im sure you hope for..but the mindset needs to change first.

I love the Adelaide Cup & am looking forward to today’s races.  That said, it’s a pretty weak edition.

What I don’t understand is why trainers avoid it?  We import plane loads of 2nd tier level stayers from the northern hemisphere, then don’t run them in all the suitable staying races.

Without researching the individual status of each of these horses, wouldn’t some from the list below be ideal Adelaide Cup candidates?

Schabau
Brimham Rocks
Southern France
Steel Prince
Mustajeer
Carif
Gallic Chieftan
Haky
South Pacific
San Huberto
The King
Azuro
Masaff

All 2nd/3rd tier horses, who battle away in big carnival staying races but realistically are not up to winning a Caulfield or Melb Cup.  So why not aim for a G2 Adelaide Cup.  That to me seems the right grade for most of these horses & with the Sydney Cup only a month away, the the Adelaide Cup would be a good lead into that race.
