Tallyho pulled up lame near hind and near fore. Going to wait and see how he pulls up in the next few days before deciding whether he progress to the National Steeple

The ground was always going to be a concern imo, given they'd raced for months on heavy & slow tracks at best. I doubt the recovery post last hurdle helped Tallyho either Lee Horner rode Felix Bay in the $125,000 race. Felix Bay started as a $2.90 favourite but was never in contention when finishing more than 18 lengths from the winner Slowpoke Rodriguez. Stewards questioned Horner and Felix Bay’s trainer, the jockey’s wife Amy McDonald, before adjourning the matter. Horner attracted plenty of commentary from punters on Twitter after the race. The jockey later deleted his Twitter account as did McDonald. However, racing photographer Peter Morganti, a part-owner of Felix Bay tweeted the jumper had been retired after the Crisp Steeplechase. "The Crisp was our target race, but chances were diminished by the drying conditions and he jumped accordingly compared to his form on wet tracks. Disappointing but that’s racing, always been ridden the same. He owes us nothing and now as an 11yo can enjoy retired life." |

Wonder what the percentage difference is for fallers in Jumps races between hurdle and steeples.
Horses and jockeys do not respect the hurdles, They go too fast and barely jump them. Steeples, I tend to think, they go a more sedate pace and they jump them properly. |

That is so, brush hurdles treated with contempt at times , nimble footed horses can overcome that trait imo, the log takeoffs for steeplechasers commands far more respect and that brush on top used to be very severe, they are imo a far better spectacle ( or were) .

The penultimate jumps meeting in Australia for 2020 takes us to Coleraine.
The feature event is the famous Great Western Steeplechase, a race that pre-dates the Melb Cup, having been first run in 1857. Today’s tips: R1 - First Crush - think he’ll appreciate the drier track R2 - The Statesman - Pateman/Payne combo can win with this guy at his 3rd Aussie jumps start R3 - Speedy Jax - costly last time when the rider was dislodged, but gut feel is he can make amends. Good luck to all!

GN Steeplechase day on a super heavy track at Ballarat.
Some small fields but really competitive races. So here goes with a few bets: R1 - FLYING AGENT He’s the experienced jumper taking on first season horses. Think he’ll cope with the big track & 4000m better than his rivals. R5 - LONGCLAW Placings behind some smart ones in hurdle races at last 2 starts, making Steeplechase debut. R6 - ABLAZE I am scared of Bee Tee Junior....but go the Champ!!!

Steve Pateman suggested that was the heaviest track he has ever ridden on. Some horses who love the Heavy couldn’t handle it.

Last year it was a "heavy 10" also, however they ran 17 1/2 seconds faster than this year which equates to about 300 metres difference.

Forget the Everest & the Caulfield Cup, the best spectacle today at will be the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie 6400m.
Really even field this year, love to see veteran Wise Men Say go well, you don’t have to bet to enjoy the awesomeness of this event.

Ryan secures talented NZ jumperFormer New Zealand jumper Magnanimous Man has joined Warrnambool trainer Patrick Ryan’s barn ahead of a likely tilt at a number of feature Victorian jumps races. "There's a bit of a wrap on Magnanimous Man," Ryan told The Standard. "He's only had a handful of jumping starts which have resulted in two wins. "His last jumps run was in the Great Northern Hurdle in October, where he was unplaced. "He handles all types of conditions and also has some ability on the flat as well as being a very handy jumping prospect. "He was purchased by some stable clients." A number of feature jumps races beckon the son of Nom Du Jeu, but Ryan has a burning desire to target the Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) at his home track in May. "The Grand Annual is the race that all jumps trainers would love to win," he said. The seven-year-old gelding was previously trained in New Zealand by Craig and Shaun Phelan, for whom he won six of his 29 starts, and placed in four others. |

2021 season kicks off today in Vic at Warrnambool.
Smallish fields as usual for the season opener. Very even fields, but I don’t think anything going around today will be contending for the feature races into the winter. Although he’s scratched today, I think Bakery Hill is one to watch when he returns. 5yo gelding by Raise the Flag, who was with Anthony Freedman last year, now switched to a specialist jumps trainer in Amy McDonald. Think he’ll be a big improver in his 2nd season of jumping.

Horner flown to Melbourne for surgery Kate Watts Jumps jockey Lee Horner has been airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after a fall at Terang on Thursday. The 30-year-old spent the night in the Warrnambool Hospital after sustaining a compressed fracture to his back as well as two fractures to his left ankle which will require surgery. Horner fell from favourite Ascot Red in the second-last fence in the Bill Roycroft Open Steeplechase (3200m) on Thursday. Ascot Red’s trainer Declan Maher has confirmed the gelding had come through the incident okay and without injury. It’s a tough blow for the jumps rider who’s coming off his best season last year including a feature double when winning the Grand National Steeplechase on Bee Tee Junior and the JJ Houlahan Hurdle aboard Instigator in August. Victorian Jockeys’ Association CEO Matt Hyland confirmed the jockey’s jumps season could be in doubt. “I spoke to Lee this morning before he flew to Melbourne, he was in a lot of pain as to be expected, but we’ll definitely know more once he arrives and has scans at the Royal Melbourne,” he said. “He’ll have surgery on the ankle injury and they’ll make a decision on how to treat the back injury when they have more information.” |

IRISHMAN TOMMY RYAN CLEANS UP AT OAKBANK Jockey Tommy Ryan checked in at Oakbank on Sunday hoping for a bit of luck, but in the space of 90 minutes had recorded his first treble – steering home the program’s first three winners in a mix of flat and jumps’ races. Ryan, the ex-Irishman who has called Australia home for the past 10 years, picked up a replacement ride on Mr Coyne in the opening event when Steven Pateman couldn’t make the weight. He then surprised many when local punters’ favourite Spying On You, known better over jumps, came with a withering run in a 2900 flat race to cruise past his opponents, setting a track record for the distance. Spying On You, trained by Grant Young, is being set for the 4950m Great Eastern Steeple, but showed great toe to win well on the flat. Ryan brought up his treble when the rank outsider Pentelligentsia gathered in tearaway leader Newbury to cruise in, giving Ryan an historic treble and Young, a former GE steeple winner as a jockey and a trainer, a double. Ryan said it was a big thrill to chalk up the treble. “I love Oakbank and the people and to win a treble here was terrific,’’ Ryan said. “We didn’t have Oakbank last year and I missed it. “To be back here riding and winning was just great. “Grant (Young) always has his horses so well prepared and is such a great horseman. He knows exactly what he is doing.’’ At this stage Ryan is set to take the ride on Spying On You in the Great Eastern Steeple and then head back to Victoria for the jumping season. For Young it was no surprise to see the 11-year-old Spying On You perform so well on the flat, the popular performer aiming for a second GE victory after saluting in 2017. “I wasn’t surprised at all. I said to the owner I thought he could run a cheeky race in a benchmark 60 at Balak (Balaklava),’’ Young said. “He’s run some nice trials over the jumps and I thought he was finishing his races off nicely. “He will go into the Great Eastern and should be just ripe for it.’’ Young has enjoyed plenty of success recently on the flat with horses carrying the Exalted moniker among the stars. Racing continues on Wednesday at Oakbank with the running of the Von Doussa Steeple and then the Saturday Easter meeting to finish the three-day carnival. |

Spying on You is a fantastic racehorse.
Started his career with the late Russell Cameron before transferring to Grant Young in 2015. He’s run in the past 4 Great Eastern’s, falling in 2016, winning in 2017, 4th in 2018 & 2nd in 2019. Looks on track for a good showing in 2021. He’s also run in 4 Grand Annuals, 5th in 2016, 6th in 2017, 3rd in 2018 & 3rd again in 2019. And also twice contested the Victorian Grand National Stple, finishing 2nd in both 2018 & 2019. Love these true marathon jumpers, not many around these days |

I have heard Grant Young be interviewed a few times about this horse and he thinks that him having last year off (only because they didn't have any jumps in SA last year) really helped him rejuvenate. He has been slowly building up his fitness in unsuitable flat races and Grant thinks that he is going as well if not better than the year he won the Eastern. Looking forward to see him up against the likes of Zed Em on Saturday.

Zed Em's Oakbank streak at stake Terry McAuliffe@MaccasMock 3:35pm Zed Em's unbeaten Oakbank record will be tested on Wednesday when contesting the $102,760 Ecycle Solutions Von Doussa Steeplechase (3250m). The 10-year-old gelding trained by Patrick Payne has never lost from five visits to Oakbank, winning the Von Doussa in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and the Great Eastern Steeplechase in 2018 and 2019. Last year's Oakbank Easter Carnival was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Zed Em will carry 70kg in the Von Doussa and will be ridden by Aaron Kuru, a New Zealand jockey who has recently relocated to join Payne's stable. Zed Em's past four wins around the Adelaide Hills circuit have been with Steven Pateman aboard but Pateman is riding Yensir for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace in the Von Doussa. After running third at his jumping debut in Britain, Yensir then won his next four starts over obstacles but the last of these victories was in August 2018. He was off the racing scene until January this year and is coming into the Von Doussa after two maiden flat appearances and subsequently two jumping trials. Two more of Zed Em’s rivals on Wednesday in the Von Doussa hail from the Eric Musgrove yard, Lucques and Zataglio, in search of an incredible 14th Von Doussa success. Another stable with a wonderful Oakbank record is that of Kiwi trainer John Wheeler and he saddles up Heistheone in Wednesday’s feature chase. The Von Doussa has attracted a final field of nine runners with only the Declan Maher trained Newbury not holding a nomination for the testing Great Eastern Steeplechase (4950m) three days later. Warrnambool trainer Symon Wilde will be represented by Elvison whilst flying the flag for South Australia in the Von Doussa field are Getting Leggie for Nick Smart and Searaven for Barry Brook. |

Will be cheering for Zed Em to get a four-peat of Von Doussa wins at Oakbank today.
But the intriguing runner is Ciaron Mahers horse - Yensir (GB). He’s a four time hurdle winner in the Uk. Was imported to Australia in late 2018 but missed the 2019 & 2020 seasons and his 2 flat runs in 2021 have been pretty good.

2 hurdles at Hamilton today, so let’s have a go:
R1 - American in Paris, former VRC St Leger place getter who acquitted himself well over hurdles last year. R2- Flying Agent, a jumping star in the making, will be even better back over the Steeplechase fences
