Tough card at Pakenham with a few short priced favourites.  Will still be interesting to see:

Saunter Boy - 2nd season hurdler being aimed at the Galleywood.
Runaway - making his season debut & presumably also Galleywood bound
Napoleon - Kiwi making his local debut with Rachael Frost.  He was placed in a few major marathon steeplechase events in NZ last season, so likely a Grand Annual, Grand National type.

My only bet will be each way in Referee in the 1st.  He’s run some handy races over the years behind the likes of Killarney Kid, Sweet Lullaby & Michelin.  Currently around 12/1.

Couple of jumps at Murray Bridge tomorrow, former flat jockey Aaron Mitchell is making his debut as a jumps jockey, riding one for Patrick Payne. Been riding a few for him at the trials.

Both Aaron’s rides are scratched today, but I’m sure he’ll pick up a ride or 2 at Warrnambool in a few weeks.

You’d think Sweet Lullaby would be a good thing in today’s hurdle for Patrick Payne.

Kim Mayberry hopes forgotten jumper Blood And Sand can take another important step towards a long-awaited racetrack return when he trials over hurdles at Warrnambool on Friday.

The eight-year-old hasn't been sighted since the spring of 2018 when a paddock accident halted his rapid rise through the hurdling ranks.

At the time, Blood And Sand had turned heads with impressive wins at both hurdle runs, including a sound defeat of subsequent Brierly Steeplechase winner Bit Of A Lad in the J.J. Houlahan Hurdle (3200m) at Ballarat.

Mayberry said the son of Arena had been close to resuming last year before another setback curtailed his 2020 campaign.

"We brought him home one day from the track, put him in his paddock and he trotted down to his favourite resting spot to have a roll but put his leg through the fence," Mayberry said.

"He got it caught in the wire and did a fair sort of a number on it.

"We had him nearly right last year but he had another little setback, so he had to have another 12 months of rehab.

"It was gut-wrenching but with the help of Michael Kent, we've had him on a rehab program and we think - or we hope - we've got him right."

Mayberry is a passionate conditioner of jumping horses and has put the polish on talented stayers Bubblegum, Our Liaison and Sentimental Band during a training career that dates back to 1984.

The 77-year-old has no doubts that Blood And Sand is the most gifted jumper he's been associated with and, while he's keen to see him back at the races, he's not in a rush to target a feature hurdle at next month's Warrnambool Carnival.

"From the day Tony Carter-Smith sent him to us, I knew he was pretty good," he said.

"I've had some good jumpers in my time but he is exceptional.

"He absolutely loves to jump.

"I'll be totally honest, we're taking it a day at a time and we don't have any goals.

"We'll see how he trials and then assess him from there.

"We think he's pretty ready to race but whether he give him a flat run first or go straight to a jumps race, we'll know more after the trial."

Friday's trials have attracted a star-studded list of entries, including previous Grand Annual Steeplechase winners Gold Medals and Zed Em, as well as emerging stars Flying Agent and Britannicus.

Day 1 of the Warrnambool Carnival:

R1 - Hey Happy

Patrick Payne debutant so sure to have been meticulously prepared for his hurdle debut.  And being by Rip Van Winkle out of a Yamanin Vital mare, he’s bred to be a jumper.

R2 - Under the Bridge

Has run well in marathon races on the flat over the past few seasons, so should have the necessary stamina to go well at his jumps debut

R3 - Gravistas & Bakery Hill

Gravistas is another Patrick Payne horse. Been disappointing on the flat since arriving from the UK but a longer trip & a few jumps might be what he’s looking for

Bakery Hill is the sleeper in the field.  By noted jumps stallion Raise the Flag & now with specialist jumps trainer Amy McDonald

R6 - Flying Agent

He’s short enough at $1.85 but I’ve backed him at nearly every jumps start he’s had and has never let me down.  It’s his first crack at a feature race but think he’s got old hard heads like Bit of a Lad, Lucques & Police Camp covered.

Good luck to all!

A little off the mark on Day 1 but those Mdn hurdles are generally poison races.  Thankfully Flying Agent did the job in the Brierly.

Day 2

R4 - Michelin

Paddy Payne chaser who was matching motors with Flying Agent last season, including a win over him at Ballarat.  Be an awesome story if he won today with Aaron Mitchell having his first ride for a few years.

R6 - Saunter Boy

Did cruise home last time & would seem hard to beat with Steve Pateman aboard

Good luck to all!

Well the short priced Saunter Boy performed below expectations but Michelin did a super job at a very tidy $5.80 collect.Clap

Day 3

R1 - Eckhart

2 hurdle starts last season for a win & a 2nd placing (behind Flying Agent) and has the Patrick Payne polish on him.

R7 - too hard!!

The GA line up is sensational & anyone of 5 or 6 could win this.  Won’t have a bet but would love to see Zed Em, Gold Medals & Spying on You all fighting out the finish.  The Kiwi raider, Napoleon might be the sleeper, he’s placed in several marathon chases back in NZ.

Good luck to all!

Warrnambool jumps carnival marred by the death of seventh horse since 2016

The Warrnambool jumps carnival has been marred by the death of yet another horse, the seventh since 2016.

Fulmineus, an 11-year-old gelding, fell during a steeplechase race on Wednesday and suffered fatal injuries.

The horse was attended to immediately by the veterinarian on hand, but was unable to be saved, although its jockey, Ross O'Sullivan, escaped without injuries.

Racing Victoria confirmed the news in a statement and expressed its condolences to the horse's trainers and owners.

"The racing incident been referred to the Jumps Review Panel to consider the circumstances and any potential safety enhancements," the statement read, in part.

"In addition, a post-mortem will be performed on the horse at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic, as is standard practice.

"RV extends its condolences to the owners of Fulmineus, his trainer Shayne Fisher and his stable staff, who cared for the horse and are saddened by their loss."

Fulmineus joins Tuscan Fire and Cliff's Dream (2016), Bring Back (2017), Now And Zen (2018), Blues Breaker (2019) and Sir Isaac Newton (2020) as the latest horses to succumb to Warrnambool.

Fulmineus' death comes after he made a return to racing last month following a 10-month layoff due to an injury to his near off foreleg.

Extraordinary performances by both Gold Medals & Zed Em.

Would have to be one of the greatest rivalries in Australian racing history, in modern times at least.

It’s akin to a Roger Federer v Rafa Nadal - two greats going head to head, season after season.

Great record Shawy.  Marvelous stuff from both him and the runner-up.

Mind you here's Zed Em's last 9 jump starts, which probably explains why he gave today's winner 2 1/2 kilos over the 5500m before going down by a length.

2nd Grand Annual/ 2nd Great Eastern/ 2nd Von Doussa/ 3rd Grand Annual/ 1st Grand Annual/ 1st Great Eastern/ 1st Von Doussa/ 2nd Grand Annual/ 2nd Brierly.

Casterton’s big jumps meeting of the year.  And looks as equally as hard as the Bool in terms of finding winners....but here goes

R1 - The Beehive - a bit speculative given he’s on debut but he’s by Zed & with the Durdens, so that’s 2 positives for a jumping future.

R2 - Sir Edwin Landseer - ex Lloyd Williams import who made a terrific debut at the Bool running 2nd & should be further improved for that outing. Tony Rosalini has a knack for unearthing a good jumper with castoffs from bigger stables.

R3 - Once Were Lost - both runs for Amy McDonald have been solidsince coming from NSW.  He’s at double figure odds today.

R4 - Small field but tough race.  Maybe Double Bluff, but he’s not that reliable

R5 - another tough race, just sit back & enjoy the magnificent spectacle of the live hedge steeplechase course.  Might have a small each way bet on Police Camp at odds

Good luck to all!

Two each way placings and a $2.70 winner from four races coming to the 5th where our regular tipster was thinking of backing Police Camp.

Hope you were on at the $13 LH!

Thanks SC, yes followed through with a win bet on Sir Edwin Landseer and each way wagers on Police Camp, The Beehive & Once Were Lost.  Fortuitously avoided the open hurdle, where Double Bluff bungled the last when in a winning position.

Very timely to see old Tony Rosolini get a promising newbie in Sir Edwin Landseer, as it looks like his stalwart for the past few seasons in Undergroundfighter hasn’t got much left in the tank, being pulled up today.

And sone great stories in the jockey ranks too:

1. Irish boy Richard O’Donoghue winning his first race in Oz
2. Braidon Small getting a double after his health battles
3. Bradley Thomas-Rantall, might be his first jumps winner?  Is he related to jumps jockey of yesteryear Neville Rantall?

Brad is a Warrnambool boy, only young (early 20's) has a young son, Often see him at the trials. I believe he is a distant relative of the late Neville.  Not sure of the particulars.

I've heard many a time that errors are more likely when jumping a flattened or partially so, batten & Williams on Double Bluff proved it to be true. They just don't seem to be able  to sight them well.

Interesting comments on Ch 78 today.
Suggested that they could perhaps if one is flattened on the first lap, they get an official to go and pick the hurdle up and put it back in place for the next time around

In the UK any damage to a fence is repaired immediately. They have personnel at every fence and spare panels in case an actual panel is damaged

Well that makes sense.  Thumbs Up

But still dislike Australian hurdles.   If they were fair dinkum battens rather than collapsibles a heap of horses would have serious foreleg problems. Too low, too "benign" these days and most horses/jockeys simply run half way through them rather than actually leap.

Horses learn wonderfully quickly from experience, so when schooled over solid obstacles, they soon work out that hitting them results in pain or A over T. However the reverse applies too i.e. treat with little respect & be rewarded with less effort needed.
Wheeler said Banner Strand jumped that 7' 4" fence at W/bool simply because he'd been taught to jump any & everything put in his way, as are all his horses.
The other problem with hurdles is the ridiculous ramp up of speed from the 800m which often results in the best of jumpers being a 1/2 stride out when meeting a jump with the consequential indecision of taking off early or late, the latter generally being disastrous more often than not.

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Heard it mentioned a number of times in Melbourne years ago , jocks " half lengthening " a certain opposition runner to make him take off who you do , has to be timed right but it brings about their downfall .
