Kim Mayberry hopes forgotten jumper Blood And Sand can take another important step towards a long-awaited racetrack return when he trials over hurdles at Warrnambool on Friday.

The eight-year-old hasn't been sighted since the spring of 2018 when a paddock accident halted his rapid rise through the hurdling ranks. 

At the time, Blood And Sand had turned heads with impressive wins at both hurdle runs, including a sound defeat of subsequent Brierly Steeplechase winner Bit Of A Lad in the J.J. Houlahan Hurdle (3200m) at Ballarat.

Mayberry said the son of Arena had been close to resuming last year before another setback curtailed his 2020 campaign. 

"We brought him home one day from the track, put him in his paddock and he trotted down to his favourite resting spot to have a roll but put his leg through the fence," Mayberry said.

"He got it caught in the wire and did a fair sort of a number on it.

"We had him nearly right last year but he had another little setback, so he had to have another 12 months of rehab.

"It was gut-wrenching but with the help of Michael Kent, we've had him on a rehab program and we think - or we hope - we've got him right."

Mayberry is a passionate conditioner of jumping horses and has put the polish on talented stayers Bubblegum, Our Liaison and Sentimental Band during a training career that dates back to 1984.
