ps I'm closely related to an Australian "party official". Does that mean whatever I might have achieved in life is down to that association?

Thanks for the article Red Hare.
No question he needed inside help. That does not make him bad or corrupt. The bad thing for us fans in Australia, New Zealand AND Ireland is the number of horses going to China never to be heard of again. |

To be fair, the aristocracy probably said the same thing whenever they shipped one out here in the early colonial period.
The real concern, of course, is what happens to the Au/NZ business when HK buys out of China instead? |

Mick Price seems to train a lot of these ‘Yulong’ horses.
But I assume they’ll place all these young Galileo colts with a trainer (or trainers) who is more adept at training stayers. Is there any indication which stable they will go to? |

It would be interesting to see how Mick Price went horses that have had an early education elsewhere.

Yueshen Zhang was merely one of the anonymous at the 2010 Melbourne Cup as a crowd of 110,223 watched Americain storm to victory.
Drawn to Flemington while on a trip to Australia to visit his daughters April and Rachel, who were studying in Melbourne at the time, Zhang was smitten by Australian racing. And the opportunities it presented. Nine years on, the Chinese business magnate is no longer anonymous. Zhang has emerged as one of the most serious – and quirky – players in the quicksilver world of thoroughbred investment and breeding. And, as he pours millions into an adopted passion, Zhang has made it clear he wants to develop his Yulong brand into the most potent bloodstock entity in the world. Those aspirations would be underpinned by Blue Diamond Stakes victory by Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Catch Me at Caulfield on Saturday. Equally, Zhang’s growing impact on the Victorian scene would also be underlined by the expected healthy competition for his quality draft at the Inglis Premier yearling Sale from March 3-6 at Oaklands. Either way, Yulong’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray has no doubt Zhang intends to deliver on a lofty mission statement. “He wants us to be the best in the world and he’s worked very hard so far to achieve what he has with what he’s done in China,” Fairgray said. “Now with the thoroughbreds in Australia, he wants to make it a world-class organisation where we breed and sell high-class horses and have a very good operation.” There are ironies and twists – but no lack of intent – in Zhang’s journey. Described as a “MacGyver” personality because of a penchant for eccentric genius, Zhang bought Gerry Ryan’s Limerick Lane at Nagambie and his now developing the property into his southern hemisphere breeding hub. Ryan raced Americain, the French star who raced to Cup glory at Zhang’s Melbourne Cup initiation. When Zhang visits the stunning stone house Ryan had purpose-built at Nagambie, the billionaire is impressively hands-on, according to Fairgray. Fairgray says Zhang shifts irrigators, walks the paddocks to check on horses, fixes electrical faults and deal with wasp nests without calling a small army of staff to help. “I would describe him as very passionate and engaged with everything he does,” Fairgray said. “He loves Victoria. “His two daughters came to university in Melbourne (April is now Yulong’s finance director) and he went to the Melbourne Cup and it built from there. “He’s very strong about building a base here in Victoria. “He loves going to the races, country Victoria, anywhere. “When he’s here at the farm he walks around and looks at every horse because he understands nutrition and he loves to be around them. “It’s not just a business acquisition, he’s passionate about the animals.” With horses spread through Australia’s elite stables, including Chris Waller, Lindsay Park, Mick Price, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Zhang has 140 horses in work and 130 broodmares. Eventually, he intends standing up to 10 stallions at Nagambie. With another property at Bayles, Zhang is laying the blueprint for forays elsewhere. “He wants it to be global,” Fairgray said. “Australia is his focus at the moment and once we get that up and going, he’ll want to branch out. “We’ve got horses racing in Ireland and in America. We’ll have some going to the Dubai World Cup, there are horses in Singapore. “He’s applied for his owners licence in Japan. “He’s very passionate about racing and breeding. “His knowledge of the Australian industry is amazing, it’s really quite scary of what he knows of the Australian industry.” Fairgray and Zhang communicate via WeChat or an interpreter. Either way, the message is the same: Plan, execute and grow. Catch Me, to be ridden by Dwayne Dunn on Saturday, is a TAB $11 shot to give Yulong its most important Victorian success. The Inglis Premier sale has 786 lots listed over four days. The sale is due to start from 11am on March 3. |

I can understand the lack of education on social media but professional journalists? Does anyone edit these days? "Zhang bought Gerry Ryan’s Limerick Lane at Nagambie and his now
developing the property into his southern hemisphere breeding hub."

Tells you one thing? To be a journalist, standards have dropped to new lows! And editors are falsely paid!! I'm no genius at spelling and punctuation. More at the spastic end of the scale! But they are supposed paid well to be just that? Geniuses

Editors don't edit. The position sets strategic direction (agenda) for the publication.
Given the costs of publishing a daily, there would be no dedicated spell check position. That'd be the journalist's responsibility. That said, the Editor should be enforcing the standards. Some joints are more carrot than stick, however.

Billionaire Yuesheng Zhang strikes gold with talented colt Yu Long Sheng HuiSELF-made Chinese billionaire Yuesheng Zhang is pouring millions into racing throughout Australia and on Saturday he unearthed a two-year-old colt which could provide him with a decent return on his massive investment. Zhang, whose businesses in China include coal mining, wind farms and hotels, has spent millions on bloodstock and farms — and he hasn’t stopped yet in Australia. After winning a maiden by six lengths at Wodonga last month, Yu Long Sheng Hui will be sent to Zhang’s horse farm, at Bayles, near the new Tynong racecourse, before embarking on a spring campaign. While trainer Mick Price will set the Sebring colt for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, he is concerned with the horse’s greenness but says it’s important that the owners have winners. “We need them to win, they are putting a lot of money into Australian racing and we need to win regardless,” Price said. “He is an interesting colt, he is very green and looked like he did so much wrong in that race. “It’s a bit of a worry, isn’t it? I haven’t got any more time to keep racing him. Physically, he could run on but if you want him for the spring, you have to do your timing and we’ll tip him out.” Zhang and Price nearly made it two in a row, but Yulong Baby was beaten narrowly in the third race by Pin Your Hopes. Price, who admitted he was concerned if the colt learnt much from Saturday’s win, says he would work out a program to get Yu Long Sheng Hui into the spring. In a fighting three-way finish after earlier sitting three-wide, Yu Long Sheng Hui ($3.70), ridden by Dale Smith, held on by a head from Wazzenme $9.50) and Navagio ($101), which dead-heated for second in the 1200m race. |

Is this a better source.
China’s Richest Race Has A (Yu)Long FutureMonday, September 5, 2016 They rolled out the red carpet … both literally and metaphorically. We can all get a little blasé about horse racing when you have the ability to attend meetings on all but two days a year, however for the people of Shanxi province in mainland China, the ¥1,000,000 Inglis China-Australia Cup on Saturday was a very big deal. The passion for racing in China is clearly evident and the large crowd cheered on as Australian-bred, Club Star, defeated compatriot, Chiaramonte … both of whom were previously multiple winners in Australia and now race for YuLong racecourse’s owner, Mr Zhang Yuesheng. Mr Zhang has become a formidable presence both in China and on the world stage. A prominent businessman in Shanxi with interests in coal, electricity generation, construction and chemicals, Mr Zhang has established breeding interests in Australia – with a property in Victoria – and a farm in China as part of his YuLong horse park where the races were held on Saturday. Indeed, the China-Australia Cup runner-up, Chiaramonte is an entire by Redoute’s Choice and Mr Zhang will ultimately stand him at stud in China. A perfect illustration of Mr Zhang’s global racing interests was that aside from the quinella in the feature race at his own course on Saturday, he is also the owner of Killarney Kid who won the last at Mooneee Valley, and of the exciting Exceed And Excel 2YO, Callender, that scored another victory in Ireland later that night. Well known to vendors in both hemispheres, Mr Zhang – via his Australian agent, Sheamus Mills – recently purchased several mares at the Tattersalls July Sale in the United Kingdom and in Australia, over the past two years, has outlaid some $6 million on 50 yearlings and broodmares. I Am Invincible is a particular favourite, purchasing nine of his yearlings at the 2016 Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Inglis Managing Director, Mark Webster, was one of several Aussie patrons at the YuLong racecourse and was delighted with the level of interest in both the meeting and the Inglis China-Australia Cup: “At ¥1,000,000 (approx $A200,000), this is the richest race in China and there was some excellent competition,” Webster pointed out. “It was a very well run event, with Australian bred horses dominating the day and we’re very proud to have been associated with this event. “The Chinese racing market continues to evolve at a rapid rate and we’re thrilled to be long-time partners.” Aushorse CEO, Tom Reilly – along with Darren Weir, David and Pru Hayes, Antony Thompson, Harry Mitchell, Justin Fong, David Chester and Sheamus Mills – also travelled to China for the race and was really taken by the level of interest from Chinese fans: “It was wonderful to be part of such an important weekend in the growth of Chinese racing, as Mr Zhang’s guest. “He has built a first-class equine facility in Youyu and has ambitions to develop racing in this part of China to a new level. Everybody who came to the meeting will have been impressed by Mr Zhang’s passion for the sport and love of horses. “I’m sure he will be a leader, not just in Chinese racing, but in racing across the globe for many years to come. “Investment from mainland China continues to grow and with more and more events like Sunday’s racing at YuLong, it can only help firm up the relationship between the two countries.” Share this: |

Looks like Yulong are going to roll out a few of the Irish imported 3yo’s in the Moomba Plate at Flemington on Saturday.
They all seem to have undergone unfortunate name changes too so as to include “Yulong” in their names. For example the nicely named Indigo Balance has become Yulong Yuheng (yuk!). I know the Craiglea Stud guy in Qld does the same thing in naming of his horses, but isn’t there something in the Aust Rules of Racing that prohibits using a business name in a racehorses name? Yulong Investments is afterall a commercial equine operation. |

Business names were once barred to my knowledge in the 50s and 60s, I do remember an incident regarding a Newtown Wonder colt that went to Melbourne and the owners wanted the name Power Pact, named after one of the golf clubs made by East Bros. in Sydney , however received the name back as Satorial Splender (second pick) brilliant colt died tragically ( if I remember rightly) in a 2yo race at Flemington,
