Not sure if this has been answered before, but the question has been bugging me for years.

What was Hilton Donaldson's invention, that caused him to lose it in this race call.

No doubt most of you have heard the call before, but it gets funnier everytime you listen to it.

Its a shame Donaldson stuffed his career up.

He has a much better voice than the current caller. The current caller is probably better but has a terrible voice.

That rant at the end. "That's the last time I help the service. To compromise one's professionalism!"

The studio must have been in stitches.

You cant compare the worst race caller ever to a handy caller in Terry.

Hilton was mad as a cut snake and the voice of a screaming banshee.

For those asking what his invention was I am sure you will find it was to do the call outside the box in the crowd.

Doing the call outside the box in the crowd has to be the stupidest idea I have ever heard.

Is that why Alan Thomas left it until his last meeting to try it? Was it also an inside joke given that it cost Hilton his job?

I was there for AT's last call with the crowd gathered round cheering him on. Great moment.

We've been spoilt for good callers over the years no doubt but with some exceptions the current crop have little personality imo.

The race callers, with the exception of Rick McIntosh and Darren McAulley have been totally sanitised

I didn't realise that was the invention he was talking about. I thought he was just pi$sed and talking gibberish trying to cover up the fact he only started calling halfway through the race by insinuating the studio stuffed up and he was inventing something? to rescue the race.

From what I understand Sunline he would have survived the cut that day if he hadn't aimed a rant at the whole broadcast team/company. But I have been told it was his idea to call from outside the box, however it does sound like somewhat like he was egged on by someone taking advantage of his effected state of mind hence he got the sh1ts. But that may have been his cover.

Did not realise all of this. Just thought he was drunk in the normal caller's box and started gibbering.

He sounded disoriented/confused, not drunk. If he was calling outside and couldn't see properly before retreating back inside, it would explain things. People were gunning for him before this though.  As Delta Deel says, I wonder if he was egged on by someone who knew it wouldn't end well?

From memory there was a delay at the track, horse/s being re-shod behind the gates or something. At another (minor) venue they were just milling around behind the gates for ages. Hilton decides he'll try and organise with the stewards or broadcast unit that the other venue goes first. By the time he tries to do this, they jumped!

To be fair, he was correct. Just not his job to organise it.

However, it wasn't his only cock-up that day.
