Walters on his way
The Sale Racecourse Reserve Committee of Management has confirmed that South Australian trainer Wayne Walters will be relocating his team to on-course stables at the Sale racecourse.
Walters currently trains his team at the Mt Gambier racecourse, which is being completely rebuilt at a cost of $3.3 million.
Currently trainers at Mt Gambier only have access to a sand track, with horses trucked to Millicent (25 minutes away) twice a week for grass gallops.
Walters, who is currently at the Karaka sales looking for his next star, trained the great galloper Torbek, who won 23 races, including the Toorak Handicap, Marlboro Cup (now Rupert Clarke Stakes), St George Stakes and C.F. Orr Stakes.
Walters also trained Boldness, who ran fourth in the 1978 Melbourne Cup, and top horses Cobra and Astrolin.
Walters will bring a team of more than 30 gallopers to Sale, with some already being agisted locally.
They will come into work when Walters, daughter Kate and her husband, Kane Post, take up residence in two barns at Sale.
One of those barns is currently rented by leading local trainer Sharyn Trolove.
The Sale Racecourse Reserve Committee of Management, the Australian Trainers Association and Trolove are currently trying to come up with a suitable arrangement so the move will not impact Trolove’s emerging business. All parties agree Trolove has been an outstanding tenant.
Racing Victoria is aware of the situation and it’s hoped a deal can be reached soon.
er rather than later.

Feel for Sharyn here. Booted out of her stable that she has paid rent for (always on time) to someone who is getting two stables and a house FREE OF CHARGE

His daughter made a strange comment after the race saying he felt flat this morning when he was galloped, And apparently Father Walters said, "he wants to be flat for a 3000m race". Geek

Top effort. Was there to be run down but fought on with great heart. 400 out and I wanted to be on Our Yangtze. Weak effort after a soft run throughout.

They are just not fast enough horses to sprint and chase down a leader who whilst leading by a good space and at a reasonable tempo was not under any pressure.

Just as an insight djebel, Tommy smith galloped all his Raceday runners on the morning of their races, sprinters up a furlong, stayers up two, his idea was, he didn't want them expending extra energy by pulling in their races, we thought it was to push the " gear" through quicker lol, Walters comment more than likely meant the same thing fwiw.

It was a low grade staying race so I guess there is not need to the winner to have any great speed.

What is his biggest success ?

He has been around for a while and seems to have a lot of horses.

WAYNE Walters doesn’t believe in ageing.

Walters will be the oldest trainer with a runner at Sandown Hillside on Saturday with Puccini in the Eclipse Stakes.

He moved to Victoria from New Zealand in the late 1970s.

In 1979 at Seymour, Walters landed a legendary plunge with Torbek, who was backed from $26 to $3.50 in a maiden.

Torbek went on to win 23 races, including the Toorak Handicap, Marlboro Cup (Now Rupert Clarke Stakes), St George Stakes and C.F. Orr Stakes.

Walters also trained Boldness, who ran fourth in the 1978 Melbourne Cup, and top horses Cobra and Astrolin. “They were fun times,” Walters said.

He wouldn’t reveal his age, saying he was as keen on training horses and as dangerous as he had ever been.
