I am guessing he is currently a 3yo and in August must race as a 4yo. Makes life a little difficult.

Wonder if this guy gets the factory treatment at the Weir yards ?

Darren Weir has given First Star two very very hard races to start off his career over totally unsuitable trips.

The horse has chased hard both times but is clearly not fast enough to keep up over these trips.

Hopefully the horse is not kissed up for when he gets to 2000m and beyond.

I think First Star is going to do some jumping, being set for a Maiden Hurdle at Warrnambool.

So why teach him to race so hard ?

Be interesting to watch him in trials how he settles.

Darren Weir a great trainer by Australian standards.

I have no idea what they are trying to achieve.
I'd like to see him try and lead or sit a bit closer.
Both runs, he has got too far back.

Darren Weir deals with Thief, Stealer

Luke Sheehan@LukeDSheehan 27 Jan, 2017 O
,(
Darren Weir really can do everything - he can even give a good name to a Thief and a Stealer.

Early on Friday night, Victoria's dominant trainer bagged a double with debutant Handsome Thief winning rather handsomely in race one, while Star Stealer stole race three with a late dash.

Four-year-old Handsome Thief took out the William Hill Plate (1200m), and Weir is hoping he can now race on for a long preparation after taking a while to get to the track.

The Shamardal entire travelled beautifully for Brad Rawiller, loomed up at the top of the straight and went on to win by 3.75 lengths eased up prior to the post from My Aim Is True, and a further 2.5 back to third-placegetter Limestone Cowboy.

It was a maiden featuring G3 placegetter Big John Cannon, and a couple of last-start runners-up in Ubersonic Empress and Layne's Star, but Weir's galloper was superior in winning in 1:10.41.

"He's always trialled up well at home - he's taken a long time to get there," Weir said.

"As [usual] with the Waratah Thoroughbred horses, they give them all the time in the world to get them right.

"He trialled up well coming here tonight, but sometimes you don't know under race conditions, but he got a great ride from Brad and he let down really well, so going forward, it's promising.

"It [1:10.41] is a good gallop, and hopefully he'll stretch out over a little bit further.

"But like all Waratah horses are beautifully bred horses, and hopefully this one can go on with the job, get over a bit further and win a better race.

"He's a sound horse; I've given him plenty of time, so there's no reason why he couldn't race on for quite a while now."

On Star Stealer's win in the Simpson Construction Handicap (1000m), Weir said they have figured out the best way to ride the five-year-old - with Ben Allen waiting patiently before unleashing a sharp burst late to win it.

I thought he was impressive yesterday. The winner might be pretty good. Although she is a 5 year old with 12 starts to her name.

He must have a hell of a lot of money to waste so many well bred horses with Australian trainers.

wonder why the sacked Weir and sent her to Canberra.
Looked city class with her first win, but has been ordinary last two preps.

The beautifully appointed Waratah Thoroughbreds farm in the Southern Highlands has made the decision to disperse its 20 strong Australian-based broodmare band and concentrate on racing and trading in stock.

Waratah will continue its elite breeding operations offshore, where mares are covered to Southern Hemisphere time with an eye to selling progeny in Australia.

Developed over the past 12 years by successful businessman Paul Fudge, Waratah Thoroughbreds has purchased its high-class broodmares from many of the world's leading bloodstock auctions.

Of the 20 mares to be sold as part of the dispersal, 11 will be offered through The Chairman's Sale (Breeding Prospects) on Thursday April 12 at Riverside Stables, immediately following the Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

The remaining nine mares will be offered at the Inglis Australian Weanling and Broodmare Sale, also to be conducted at Riverside Stables, from April 15 to 17.

Highlights of the offering include:
*Grade One-winning Bernstein mare Miss World (USA, pictured above) in foal to Champion sire Fastnet Rock
*Jemsa (USA), a three-quarter sister to Kentucky Derby winner and successful sire Street Sense, in foal to Medaglia d'Oro
*Two mares in foal to Snitzel including Flemington Stakes performer Ephemera, a half-sister to VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner Running Tall from a half-sister to successful American sire Midshipman
*City-winning Elusive Quality mare Gamba, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour, in foal to Capitalist
*Mares in foal to Sebring, More Than Ready, Hinchinbrook, Star Witness, Choisir, Starspangledbanner and Redoute's Choice.

"The decision to disperse these mares has not been easy but I look forward to seeing them produce racetrack stars for their new owners in the future,’’ Fudge said.

"I love racing and breeding and will continue to stay involved in the industry both here and around the world."

Inglis National Bloodstock Director Jonathan D'Arcy was thrilled to be offering Fudge's quality mares to a world-class buying bench in 2018.

"This group of mares have been mated to the very best sires in the world over the past few years and several of them have yearlings and 2YOs about to hit the racetrack by stallions like Deep Impact, Fastnet Rock, I Am Invincible and Exceed and Excel and many are from some of the world's most active female families,’’ D'Arcy said.

"This unreserved dispersal sale offers breeders from around the world access to a high-class group of mares in the prime of their breeding lives with some amazing upside to come."

The Chairman's Sale (Breeding Prospects) will be conducted at Riverside Stables on Thursday April 12, 2018.
