Hi Forum

Given that last year I said Dusty Martin was ridiculously good odds to win the Norm Smith last year at $5, then he won, Im happy to post my selection this year.

I think Travis Varcoe will win the Norm Smith at around $29.

He lost his sister a few weeks ago.
Interestingly, Damien Oliver lost his brother, then went on to win the Melbourne Cup on Media Puzzle.
Strangely, Damien Oliver got injured this week. (maybe a bizarre omen)

So, Travis Varcoe to win the Norm Smith for his sister.

He doesnt poll much in Brownlows etc, however he has proven to be extremely good in Grand finals.
He was very influential in Geelongs 2011 Grand Final, kicking one of the greatest running goals in Grand Final history.
In that same grand final, he also opened up the game by kicking the first goal within 10 seconds
He oozes self belief on this big day

All players go as hard as they can for the Grand Final.
However I think for his sister, we are going to see something very very special.
He will run super hard and make crucial tackles.
he is also known to chase down a player from behind and lay a huge tackle. That always looks great for this medal.

If Collingwood win, that helps his chances.

He is extremely good value at $29.
Many other players poll better, eg Sidebotoom, etc, (but could be tagged).
However Varcoe slips under the radar for this game.

Dangerous around goals, and expect him to lay some highlight tackles all day.

Always had the talent, has been playing as well as ever since the tragedy, sometimes he just doesn't commit to the contest ... $41 seems right.

Mines on Billy Slater, happy with the $1.10Wink

I will only be watching the game for Brodie Grundy.
He is a very nice boy whom I have been lucky enough to meet a few times abs he is a friend of my grandson.

Other than that, I don’t care to much for Collingwood.
In fact, Eddie McGuire is a flog.

Persuasive. Why is he a long price?

If it turns into a stoush, he doesn't put his head over the ball.

If it's an open shoot out, he will be a factor.

Outside chance at best.

He's those odds for a reason. He's not a huge possession winner. He'll have to have a very good impact with his minimal touches and be involved in a few key moments. A couple of goals is a must as well.

I will say one thing which might be a bit insensitive but l think it's a fact. If Collingwood win, and there's no clear stand out for them and Varcoe is in the mix - they're more inclined to give it to him to add to the story. Sympathy vote if you like.

For what it's worth, l'll be having a bet on Yeo. He's turned himself into a star of the comp. Love the way he goes about it.

Agree with Yeo, a gun, he is the kind of player who will trouble the Pies, just so powerful. The Weagles wont be slaughtered in the air like Richmond were either ... certainly looking like a close game ... harder to pick than a broken nose!

De Goey is flying, my pick if the Pies win, fwiw

There are far more logical picks than Varcoe.

However, I do think he will play the game of his life.
Sometimes in sports, we are blessed with great stories, and this one is brewing.

He is going to lay high chase tackles all day long.

He also switches on very early in big games. Many players cant do that.
Evident in his 2011 grand final goal, within first 10 seconds.
Burst out of centre square, took it upon himself, and went bang.

He would also be nearing end of his career.
The stars have aligned for Varcoe.

He will get knocked down, and simply keep bouncing up all day.

Cyril Rioli won a Norm Smith.
Varcoe will have a Cyril kind of day, but perhaps even more so.

It largely depends of Magpies winning though.
There are up to 25 players on the field, you can rule out winning the Norm Smith.
Varcoe isnt one of them

Ive put $250 on Varcoe at $41, for a $10,000 collect.

I think he should be more like $12 to $15.
Expect him to play the game of his life.

By the way, I think Varcoe has always been grossly under-rated.

Even in this epic moment, look at the first minute of this video.
None other than Varcoe, calmly giving off the quick assist to Chapman for the sealing goal.

I'd say the tall Texan is a must for best on ground.
