A lot of talk over the last few days on Black Caviar has been about her not holding any track records.

this has got to be one of the most ridiculous statements ever, who remembers track records??

how many track records below are held by Phar Lap, Vein, Manikato?

BC holds as many track records as Makybe Diva.

Miss Andretti holds many track records but we rarely speak of her

Would like to know why people think track records mean so much??

"A lot of talk over the last few days on Black Caviar has been about her not holding any track records."

I can't recall any. You mean in the general media or here? I have certainly never mentioned the lack of track records in any discussion of BC's merits.

Pretty sure Phar Lap, Vain and Manikato all set track records but you're right on its own it's a poor measure of quality overall. In BC's case it is icing on an already rich cake.

Frankel doesn't hold any track records and he's the greatest horse in history.

I mentioned something along these lines in the Lightning thread when some were saying that the time was wrong or the distance etc...

I went on to say that 99% of records are due to the state of the track and only 1% due to the horse. That is why the list of records are not littered with superstars.

For those that want to say that it was the track condition that made it possible to run such a time for BC and that she shouldn't hold the record and it was Special's record. How certain are they that the track on the day Special recorded the record wasn't very fast?

Is Sandown's 1000m still the quickest on Metro tracks?

Special broke the track record on a fast track IIRC

I think much of the time when the top races are on, in the East. States anyway, the tracks are prepared to be at their best i.e. a decent cushion of grass which generally isn't conducive to track records, race ones maybe.

If you're going to get track records in big races it will most likely be Melbourne in the autumn cos it's not autumn it's still summer and it's still hot and often dry so the tracks get fast.

I was there for Special. The track rating that day might as well have been "road". It was lightning fast.

Boys On Tour holds the same number of track records as Black Caviar.

Came across this old thread . Course Records DO mean quite a lot.

Not about who holds them , as track readings differ but they do give a guide , to the merit of various runs each meeting.
By comparing who runs best, on any given meeting,   compared to the course record.    ( the sectional splits are also a guide )

Never forget .. The fastest wins every race.

I don't quite grasp what you mean ... I presume you think early pace is what decides a CR.
Most sprints are run at reasonable tempo and sectionals disclose that. All about analysing the merits of individuals .
The Slipper was a top example.    The 2Y/O lead ups had the Fillies equal to the males , of which Microphone best of the boys.
The Diamond and lead ups, saw the Fillies best and given the 2 winners on the wet at R'hill in the lead ups , they had to be included.
That 2K allowance for the girls had them right in it.
Nice winner at big odds ( Scamanda cleaned up with dutching & multi's )
