    Posted: 23 Dec 2015 at 9:05pm
Racing Victoria (RV) has today released its 2016 jumps racing program with a major boost in prizemoney and the creation of a feature two-day carnival at Sportsbet-Ballarat headlined by the Grand National Steeplechase among the key enhancements.

The 2016 Victorian jumps racing season will commence on Tuesday, 8 March at Warrnambool and conclude on Sunday, 25 September at Coleraine. A total of $3.51 million in prizemoney – an increase of $510,000 on 2015 – will be on offer across 63 jumps races with a split of 42 hurdle races and 21 steeplechase races.

Click here to view the full 2016 Victorian Jumps Racing Program.

The key changes and enhancements in the 2016 jumps racing program are outlined as follows:

1) The first across-the-board prizemoney increases since 2012 including:

  • Grand National Steeplechase increased from $250,000 to $350,000;
  • Grand Annual Steeplechase increased from $250,000 to $300,000;
  • Galleywood Hurdle, Brierly Steeplechase, Australian Hurdle,Australian Steeplechase, Crisp Steeplechase and JJ Houlahan Hurdle each increased from $100,000 to $125,000;
  • Kevin Lafferty Hurdle, Thackeray Steeplechase, Brendan Dreschler Hurdle and Mosstrooper Steeplechase each increased from $80,000 to $100,000;
  • Minimum prizemoney of $25,000 for Maiden Hurdles; and
  • Minimum prizemoney of $30,000 for Ratings Hurdles and Steeplechases.
2) Creation of a two-day jumps carnival at Sportsbet-Ballarat to conclude the feature race season with six jumps races run across Saturday, 20 August and Sunday, 21 August;
  • Grand National Steeplechase to conclude the feature race season for a second year running at Sportsbet-Ballarat on 21 August;
  • JJ Houlahan Hurdle run on 21 August to provide two showcase races on the final feature day of the season;
  • A new feature race called the Ballarat Marathon Hurdle (4000m) to be staged on 20 August;
  • Remaining flat races at Sportsbet-Ballarat on 20 August will be programmed as highweight races exclusively for jumps jockeys; and
  • An international jockey challenge to be incorporated into the two-day carnival with leading riders from Ireland invited to attend.

Other key points in relation to the 2016 jumps racing program include:

  • The Grand National Hurdle will return to Ladbrokes Park Sandown on Sunday, 7 August;
  • Thackeray Steeplechase Day and Mosstrooper Steeplechase Day have each been programmed three weeks later than 2015 to provide natural lead-up races to the Grand National Hurdle and Grand National Steeplechase;
  • In addition to increased prizemoney for feature jumps races at Warrnambool’s May Racing Carnival, an additional maiden hurdle has been programmed on the middle day of the Carnival ensuring a minimum of two jumps races on each day of the Carnival;
  • Subject to the successful completion of jumps trials on 3 June, Racing.com Park (Pakenham) will make its debut as a jumping track with races programmed on 26 June and 17 July, including the return to Pakenham of the MJ Bourke Hurdle; and
  • The introduction of One Win Jumps races into the program races that will intersperse with 0-120 and 0-125BM races throughout the year to provide additional opportunities for novice horses.

RV Manager – Racing Operations and Jumps Racing, Paul Bloodworth, said the 2016 jumps racing program was designed to foster participation at all levels of the sport and ensure feature events are a showcase for the industry.

“A significant investment has been made in the program with a $510,000 boost in prizemoney across the entire season – the first such increase since 2012 - headlining the industry’s commitment to growing the sport off the back of significant improvements in its safety record over the past five years,” Bloodworth said.

“This boost in prizemoney can be seen from the maiden ranks, where we’ve increased minimum prizemoney to $25,000, right up to our showpiece races like the Grand National Steeplechase and Grand Annual Steeplechase, which have been increased by $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.

“We’re excited to see jumps racing commence at Racing.com Park in June, while the completion of Ladbrokes Park Sandown’s track renovation will also see the return of jumps racing to the venue, which has been a winter staple in previous seasons.

“Off the back of last year’s successful Grand National Steeplechase at Sportsbet-Ballarat, we’re excited at the opportunity to expand this into a two-day carnival that will conclude the feature race season and we’ll again look to add an international flavour to the meeting.”

Warrnambool is again the most active track with 16 races programmed, including six during its famous May Carnival, while Ladbrokes Park Sandown will host six metropolitan jumps races, including the Australian Hurdle and Steeplechase double on Saturday, 28 May.

Eric Musgrove had a few of his top liners resuming today at Mount Gambier in THUBIAAN and URBAN EXPLORER . But it's also interesting to see another ex-Waller horse in DANCHAI has now joined his team.

VIC jumps season starts 8th March at the Bool.

SA jumps season starts 13th March at Oakbank.

The Bool should get Victoria Pendleton down as an Ambassador for their carnival. Cycling town and a racing town. Perfect and very marketable person too.

In the maiden, I like MR JAZZ. His run at MV over 3000m was pretty good, he seems to possess the necessary stamina and is in the top jumping stable.

In the open hurdle, here's hoping the great run that the Gai Waterhouse stable. Is having continues with 3rd season jumper VALEDICTION saluting.

Great to have the jumps back Clap

so far away from any decent stable?? what about 10 metres?
D K Weir has stables on course plus 50 odd horses just down the road? I would of thought he was a 'decent trainer'

SA's first jumps meeting this season at Oakbank today.

Eric Musgrove and Grant Young have strong hands in both races.

About The Journey for me in the hurdle.

Spying On You for me in the steeplechase.

Oakbank - Nishiazabu ready for Easter after steeple blitz

Brad Waters - 13 Mar 2016

Jockey Paul Hamblin asked co-trainer Kevin Frew for permission to lead before Nishiazabu ran his rivals off their legs in Sunday's Thomas Foods International Steeplechase (3250m) at Oakbank.

Nishiazabu strolled to a 21-length win at Sunday's Oakbank meeting.

Nishiazabu finished third in the corresponding race last year before running fourth in the Von Doussa Steeplechase (3250m) and third in the Great Eastern Steeplechase (4950m) at the famous Oakbank carnival.

Frew said Nishiazabu has developed as a jumper since last season while a fitness edge allowed Hamblin to set a strong gallop throughout the $40,000 event.

Nishiazabu started as a $4 favourite but had most of his rivals struggling a lap from home before striding out in the straight to beat Spying On You ($6) by 21 lengths.

"I didn't give Paul any instructions until we popped him on and he said, 'would it worry you if I led?'," Frew, who trains Nishiazabu in partnership with his wife Heather, said.

"I said, 'no I didn't mind because it keeps him out of trouble'."

Frew said Nishiazabu had a great fitness base for his first steeplechase outing of the 2016 season with a 3000m flat run at Warrnambool before a jumps trial on the Oakbank course on February 29.

"We knew we had him ready because he had the race at Warrnambool and he did the two laps in the steeple trial here while some of the others did one (lap)," Frew said.

The trainer said Nishizabu, who was the stable's first winner from their new Murray Bridge property, would return to Oakbank for the 2016 editions of the Von Doussa and Great Eastern Steeplechases.

Earlier, champion Victorian jumps trainer Eric Musgrove won his second hurdle race in the first week of the new jumps season when About The Journey strolled to an 8-½-length win in the Somerled Hurdle (2900m).

Musgrove won a hurdle at Warrnambool on Thursday with Agreement before About The Journey ($3.80) proved too strong for local gallopers Baklava Boy ($16) and Sir Dylan ($10).

Apprentice Clayton Douglas steered About The Journey to his Oakbank win.

Experience is something you gain a few minutes after you could have used it!

Reckon the only reason Mutajara finished was because he risks being barred again if he didn't.

At 54 lengths last - he should have been pulled up well out of contention. He didn't jump well :(

If it runs again over the hurdles again, good chance it will die.
Hope it is retired now
