Six-month disqualification for Queensland trainer

Brad Waters
30/05/2013

Racing Queensland stewards have disqualified a trainer for six months for injecting his horse with a medication on the morning of a race at Ipswich on May 4.

Stewards opened an inquiry into Kent Fleming's actions after establishing Karl The Great had been injected with 'Halo', a treatment for joint pain, during a stable inspection on the morning of the Ipswich meeting.

Fleming immediately admitted treating Karl The Great on raceday before stewards scratched the horse from its scheduled event.

Stewards subsequently charged Fleming with a breach of AR 178C(2), which reads, "no person without the permission of the stewards may administer or cause to be administered any medication to a horse on race day prior to such horse running in a race".

Fleming pleaded guilty to the charge and made a submission relating to his penalty at a hearing at Racing Queensland's offices on Monday.

The stewards' panel, chaired by chief steward Wade Birch, considered Fleming's personal circumstances and his guilty plea but recognised the need "for a penalty to serve as a deterrent to Mr. Fleming and to illustrate to all industry participants that this conduct will not be tolerated".

Stewards noted the trainer's latest offence was his third of a drug-related nature before disqualifying Fleming until midnight on November 27.

This.
6 months for a pain killer (admittedly 3rd strike) yet performance enhancers have seen only similar, or lessor, penalties from bigger stables.

Yep, didn't Weir get $7000 fine for the performance enhancer Lasix? Pretty sure it wasn't his first offence either.
