I've decided to scour the newspapers each morning to report what is in the news overnight - some of it is very much old news, but some of it is surprising.

Racing News Round-up: Monday March 14 2011

Here’s what is making news in racing this Monday morning.

  • Australian Cup winner Shocking is feeling the effects of a firm track on Saturday and is at long odds to start in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill this weekend. He is likely to go straight to the Group 1 BMW (2400m) on April 2.

  • Theseo is out of the Ranvet Stakes, with Gai Waterhouse saying he will run in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

  • Star mare Hot Danish is out of the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) due to an infected leg. It robs the race of an intriguing clash with More Joyous and the returning Rangirangdoo.

  • Melito is likely to start favourite in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) after connections changed plans to run her in that race before a tilt at Group 1 glory in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) in Hong Kong.

  • Star Witness will still go to Royal Ascot for the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes (1000m) and the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes (1200m). Trainer Danny O’Brien says the colt was worked up by the noise coming from the neighbouring Showgrounds, where the television show Top Gear was being filmed.

  • VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner Running Tall will go into the Golden Slipper without another run.

  • Australian Guineas winner Shamrocker will target the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 26 as opposed to the Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) for fillies a week later. A decision is yet to be made on whether she runs in the AJC Derby, the AJC Oaks or both.

  • Black Caviar has been given a Timeform rating of 135 after her win in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on Saturday. It ranks her as the fourth best Australian horse since 1960 – after Tulloch (138), Kingston Town (137) and Manikato (136) – and clearly the best mare. In comparison, dual Cox Plate winner Sunline and triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva received a career-high rating of 129.

  • Sepoy has firmed into $1.90 favourite three weeks out from the Golden Slipper. He is a likely starter in this Saturday’s Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m), where he will meet a cracking field including Foxwedge, Straight Gold and Smart Missile.

  • Slipper second favourite Satin Shoes will tackle the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m), where she will once again meet Elite Falls. Houston Benefactor is also a likely runner.

  • You’re Canny was a surprise winner of the Black Opal Stakes, defeating the previously unbeaten Karuta Queen. The Queanbeyan-trained filly has eased from $5.50 to $11 for the Golden Slipper.

  • Melbourne females Aloha and Miss Gai Flyer are confirmed runners in this Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).

  • Tabcorp has rejected a takeover bid for Sky Channel from rivals TVN.

Karuta Queen lame but still chasing Slipper
Canberra
March 14, 2011

THE Golden Slipper remains the target for Karuta Queen despite the filly's shock defeat in the Black Opal Stakes after which she was found to be slightly lame.

The Magic Millions winner started $1.20 in the 1200-metre listed race but was outgunned in the straight by You're Canny ($11), who won by 1½ lengths.

Karuta Queen was later found to have grade one lameness in her near foreleg.

Well if Theseo is going to the George Ryder it makes me think she will go QOTT, but i don't rate Theseo a winning chance at the same time.

I hope she goes to it because she is good enough to win these big WFA races and deserves them too.

Agree it seems a good idea, anything to help rationalize the scattergun effect is good.

Thanks Gay3, that's the news I wanted to see.

I think she's such a fit horse they can back her right off without it taking too much fitness out of her.

These setbacks are common for horses picking up races over the summer, will be disappointed if she doesn't make it to the slipper in top condition but at least they picked up the millions.

I think she'll make a cracking 3yo sprinter. Bring on the Ascot Vale or whatever they call it now.

Young jockey Reece Potter has died from injuries suffered in a race fall at a picnic race meeting in western NSW last weekend.

Potter's family made the agonising decision to switch off the life support for the badly injured rider on Monday.

Potter, 23, was badly injured in a fall during the running of the sixth race at the Tottenham picnic races
in western NSW last Saturday.

His mount Half Handycrashed to the turf after breaking its pelvis. He was thrown heavily receiving severe head injuries.

Potter was transported from the racecourse to Dubbo by ambulance and then airlifted to Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital late on Saturday night where he remained in a critical condition on life support.

Doctors at RPA performed exhaustive tests and today the family made the decision to turn off the life support system.

Potter was a grandson of Harry Williams, a former champion Western Districts jockey, and a nephew of top Goulburn trainer Danny Williams.

“This is a tragedy and our heartfelt sympathies go out to Reece's mother Vikki and his family," said Peter V'landys, CEO for Racing NSW.

“I believe he was an extremely popular young rider who was based near Hawkesbury and his loss would no doubt be a devastating blow for all that knew him.

“This is a very sad day for the NSW thoroughbred racing industry. I would like to offer the Potter family and friends our sincere condolences for their loss.”

Racing NSW has offered counselling to all riders that participated at the Tottenham race meeting.

From R+S.

Very sad news.

One of the most dangerous sports around.

It really makes you think about how much the jockeys risk their lives.

Racing News Round-up: Tuesday 15 March 2011

Here’s what is making news in racing this Tuesday morning.

  • The Robert Hickmott-trained, Lloyd Williams-owned Muir has won the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) after being rated perfectly in front by Darren Gauci. He just lasted to defeat Saddler’s Story and Macedonian. It was Lloyd Williams’ second Adelaide Cup in five years after winning with Gallic in 2007.

  • Young bush jockey Reece Potter loses his fight for life after a fall at the Tottenham picnic races in western NSW on Saturday.

  • Leviathan owner Lloyd Williams has confirmed that Zipping will race in Sydney this autumn – he says that his veteran is a 30% chance of contesting the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) this Saturday, may contest the Manion Cup (2400m) the week after with a 61kg topweight, or could go straight to The BMW (2400m) on Slipper Day.

  • Melito has been confirmed as a definite starter in this Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) despite having to carry 59.5kg. Trainer Gerald Ryan declared he was happy with the weight, as he thought she might get 61kg.

  • Hot Danish will now aim at the Doomben 10 000 after an injury ruled her out of this Saturday’s Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

  • The Mark Kavanagh-trained Shrapnel is now looking towards Group 1 glory, perhaps in the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m), after his dominant win in the Group 2 Yallambee Classic (1200m) at Morphettville yesterday.

  • A small field is expected for the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at weight for age next Friday, with Black Caviar heading towards the race. King Pulse, Crystal Lily and True Persuasion are three likely challengers.

  • An inquiry has been adjourned into Ben Melham’s handling of Montgomery, who ran an unlucky second at Moonee Valley yesterday.

  • Cybercyn won the C.S. Hayes Memorial Cup at Morphettville yesterday at mammoth odds – $175 on UniTAB.

  • Damien Oliver has picked up the ride on 2010 New Zealand Derby winner Military Move in Sunday’s Hong Kong Derby. Military Move is one of three runners for expat Aussie John Moore, with Darren Beadman to ride former European galloper Xtension.

  • Hay List will run again in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) on Sunday March 27 at Warwick Farm before tackling Black Caviar again in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 9.

  • Grahame Begg is hoping the Rosehill track remains firm so his star mare Palacio De Cristal can have every chance in Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic.

  • Star Kiwi mare Keep The Peace is expected to make waves in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) this weekend. She will then head to The BMW before heading over to Hong Kong to tackle the Group 1 QEII Cup (2000m).

Two points Andy... Cybercyn paid 123.3 on unitab, and closed at 301 fixed... Also I mentioned this in the ranvet thread, Zipping has been removed from unitab's BMW market, what is with that?

I don't know - but the Daily Telegraph interviewed Lloyd yesterday (it was in this morning's paper). He's very likely to come to Sydney. I'll post the article.

I've made a mistake though - it was Super TAB not UniTAB that had him at $175 fixed. I'll edit that.

Warhorse Zipping set for BMW

LLOYD Williams stole the Adelaide Cup with outsider Muir yesterday and now he is surprisingly gunning for the $2.25 million BMW (2400m) with warhorse Zipping.

Less than a week after a bruised leg ruled the nine-year-old out of the Australian Cup, Williams is confident Zipping will travel north for "one, maybe two" races during the Sydney Carnival including Saturday's Group One Ranvet Stakes.

"He's entered this week just in case the bruising [in his off-hind leg] which kept him out of the Australian Cup subsides in time," Williams said. "I'd say there's only a 30 per cent chance he'll run this week."

A dark cloud hovered over the future of Zipping after the popular galloper injured his off-hind leg kicking out in his box at Macedon Lodge Stables.

Williams said the leg had "blown up like a football" but the swelling has subsided.

"If he doesn't run [Saturday] there's a quality handicap with a 61kg topweight the week after [Manion Cup]," the large-scale owner said.

"There's a chance he could go straight into the BMW. He's certainly very fit," Bookmakers had withdrawn Zipping from betting for the feature staying race at Rosehill Gardens on Golden Slipper day but TAB Sportsbet Fixed Odds re-instated him at $12.

Maluckyday, second-up in the Group One Ranvet (2000m) on Saturday, is a dominant favourite for the BMW at $3.20.

Muir, guided by a brilliant ride by experienced jockey Darren Gauci, held off a fast finishing Saddler's Story by a long neck with Macedonian a further half length away in third.

Favourite King Diamond finished fifth.
