There’s more than a hint of discontent when you talk with trainers about the upcoming ban of nylon stockings as tongue ties.

Racing Australia this week notified trainers that nylon stockings – along with adhesive bandages and vet wrap – would no long be approved as tongue ties from March 31.

Instead only Lycra, rubber bands and leather ties with 50mm thickness will be the only legal tongue ties.

The ‘issue’ of nylon stockings being used as tongue ties was raised in an ABC television report over 12 months ago and it’s believed the rule introduction is in response to the program.

“We’re listening to people who don’t understand our business,” said trainer Ken Keys. “Officialdom seem to be listening to people without consulting enough.”

Trainer Simon Morrish prepared Mental Telepathy to win over 2400 metres at Sandown Hillside on Wednesday with a tongue tie applied.

“I don’t use the nylon stockings, I use ladies tights because it’s a softer fabric,” Morrish said.

“But if you look at the nylon stockings, if the horses resented it they wouldn’t go and it’s there to help them breathing.

“The industry should be courageous enough to stand up to these minorities rather than pandering to them.

“If somebody tries to intrude on AFL, tennis or cricket, their respective administrations go ‘you can have an opinion but we’re running the show'," Morrish added.

Are the proposed tongue tie materials better? Ie more comfortable for the horse? Is it a circulation concern?
There were much more important issues raised in that report, and frankly, I haven’t heard of RV announcing any real actions or answers to the problem. Except for taking more prize money percentage for horse welfare? 🤔😳

Try using a wide tourniquet on a body part then a tiny one. I realise a scientific reading can't be obtained but it's the best analogy I can think of.
I have a lovely 1" wide webbing one I ordered from an Irish saddlery many years ago which the horses appeared to accept much more readily than stockings or elastic bands.
The webbing being dry, sticks well to the tongue & I was able to adjust the velcro to the same tension on each individual i.e. tongues & lower jaw sizes vary.
Try pulling out your own tongue, wrapping a small rubber band around it close to the frenulum (base) & leaving it in place for at least 20mins.
They do have their place but whatever's used should not result in a purple tongue post race.

Well Gay it looks like you are going to have to throw away your "lovely 1" wide " tongue tie as the minimum width will now be 50mm which is more than 2" wide.

Have seen some right messes caused by horse trainers not knowing how!!! Sometimes wonder were they even tested properly to hold licenses? Do know of plenty who cannot and will not put a bandage on! FACT
