Who is/was it ? I really don't have a ready answer, or even a shortlist of probables, though John Curtin, who worked himself to death as wartime PM, and General Sir John Monash, who was one of the greatest generals on the Western Front in WWI, do enter the mind. There was also Florey, a major contributor to the advent of antibiotic drugs, probably the greatest innovation in Medicine. Who do you think ?

Fred Hollows or Victor Chang. Either will do me before any politician, warmonger, athlete or bible basher.

There were rumblings that Hollows didn't treat his wife that well.

Five kids in sixteen years and Fred had this to say about Gabi - I discovered what an unusual person Gabi was early on, when I worked with her in a blacks' camp in the Territory. I was examining eyes and grading for trachoma; Gabi was taking visual fields and I can tell you which is the harder job - hers. You have to deal with linguistic and cultural differentials and be patient and pleasant if you hope to achieve anything. Gabi must have examined two hundred people that day, and she was as soothing and agreeable to the two hundredth as she had been to the first. I noticed something else: Gabi's tone of voice, manner and body language didn't change, whether she was dealing with the station manager or the oldest, most withered Aborigine in the camp. That kind of innate goodness is rare.— Fred Hollows, ABC Radio national interview |

In reference to every post in the Trump thread ... "There may have been a tiny bit of license taken there" ... Ok, Thanks for the "heads up" PT!

We want to know what you think, Flash. You'd expect the "greatest Australian" would have their portrait on the currency somewhere, but I guess there is no definitive answer. The greatest Briton is probably easier to pick, I'd say Sir Isaac Newton by lengths.

The greatest contributor to the common good, I'd say. Florey would be hard to pass by, people do not realise that life before antibiotics was apt to end prematurely from untreatable infections for a third of the population.

His father might have a claim to being a great Australian, through his fearless exposure of the folly of Gallipoli. |

Tony Abbott had considerable difficulty finding a great Australian to knight, had to settle for Prince Phillip instead. We are such a mediocre bunch.

I think there are great Australians doing great things, all over the country, every day, and they very rarely get any recognition for it.
Firies. Paramedics. Cops . Nursing Staff. Soldiers. To mention a few.

Skippy certainly is up there, vying for the title of worst television ever, it was never explained, and is still unknown, what the park rangers were smoking, that enabled them to understand kangaroo talk.

Ray Martin was brave in the face of endless, misguided jibes about a hairpiece. The greatest TV personality, perhaps.
