The race is clearly between Eastender and Surprise Baby with a few co stars as well.

Great race and provided the winner comes from the top 6 in the market the winner will be a worthy Cup runner.

About 4 weeks ago Surprise Baby was $81 for the Melbourne Cup. Now he is second favourite at $20.

We know it's a long way out from the Melbourne Cup but good luck to those punters who jumped on the $81
Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

Wow! Has a strong stable a crew behind him but that is extremely short in this era of international domination.

If and it’s a big IF he does make the field.
Will probably get triple figures on race day.
Absolutely mad to back him at $81 let alone $20’s IMO

Still yet to prove himself

I definitely can, Steel did all the work last start, was entitled to stop. Can't see him being beat with an easier run..sure I saw $3.50 or so when markets went up so someone agrees as is under $3.00 now

They want to increase the race from $400,000 To $700,000 and make it a Group race

Can you get a Group classification and restrict it to AU/NZ breds? I wouldn't have though so but there don't seem to any rules.Tongue

It would not be recognised by catalogues as a group race if restricted to Australian and New Zealand horses.

They have no intentions of weakening the Melbourne Cup and will not go down this line.

Anyway a Group classification on the race would be as useful as tits on a bull. The race doesn't need one to serve its purpose.

I need to know djebel what you mean by weakening the field?

Some of the donkeys that get a run from overseas because they won a group 3 two years ago against five opponents, should not be given precedent over the locals.

The Ebor has been a qualifier for the last ten years at least, and it has a shocking record of providing place getters let alone winners of the cup.

The reason I asked my question is I already know punters who were died in the wool Cup punters, but they now bet around the race (so they bet up big in the 3yo fillies race before, and the 1800m listed event after) because the form lines are to hard to line up of the overseas horses who do not run here before the cup!

The race is losing its appeal among non racegoers as well, so I am not against the VRC giving another local stayer an exemption.

If you want the race to be a popularity contest that is fine but if it is to be a quality race than you do not close the Ballot free races to imported horses.

People were whinging about the quality of the Andrew Ramsden, You take out the imports and it is a diabolical race.

Just because a race is a qualifying race does not mean it is a ballot exempt race.

If ANY race is to be ballot free ALL COMERS must be able to run in it.

You win any 2400-2500 Derby in Australia your horse is qualified for the Cup.

I think you miss the point of the race djebel.

The Melbourne Cup is not the best race quality wise every year, but it is history.

The Kentucky Derby is the most well known race in US but the field is usually made up of horses who could not win at 2000m if they had a minute head start.

There are so called better races around the world, including the richest at Meydan which is run on some in between surface, where the field is not made up of all the best horses in the world.

The Melbourne Cup is the best quality 3200m handicap in the world. No it is not a wfa event, no it does not see Winx or Arrogate or Dubai Millenium or Frankel or Black Caviar, but it is what it is.

The overseas horses such as Red Cadeaux, Yeats, Americain, Dunaden, and others have proven themselves in other big races internationally, I mean we even had a horse run in 1996 who had run third in the Arc.

Just because some more locals get a run and keep out one or two internationals who have form from two years ago and they can still make the race to me is not a popularity contest, it is good marketing and promotion.

I agree that the thought this race should not be open to imports, is ridiculous, as the only thing I care about is if the import is trained in Australia, it makes them Australian as the prizemoney stays here!

Excellent post Voyager you have hit the nail on the head, if your honest with yourself the only way to analyse this great traditional race is to remove the blinkers and look at it for what is IS, a 2 mile handicap that is considered our greatest race steeped in tradition , history and wonderful memories of greatness , courage and memories, we don't have to move the goalposts all the time to appease some people who are blinded by what they do o/s all the time , we are going through a decline in our staying stock but hopefully the tide will turn with the hope of our NZ friends come along for the ride as well after all it is a unique race , the one that stops the nation, long may it remain that way.

I agree with this 95%

All we need to do is remove the group race status.

We are not going through a decline in our staying stocks, We are going through a decline in our training ranks.

Who would you consider djebel to be a G1 handicapper racing in OZ at present, not referring to "promising types" over a journey upwards of 1 and 1/2 miles that have been bred here?

Take your time lol, a day a week longer if you like , but I will mention this I'm leaning a little your way in regards to trainers , but imo it's the "system" it's changed so much in the last 15-20 years it's a smorgasbord for sprinter/milers and the trainers have fallen into line with what's on the "menu", there are NZ trainers that are better and more patient with stayers than ours because they have never lost sight of the "bunny", the big pay day that comes with time, they are much more hungrier ( no smorgasbord ) and they plan.
