It is with great saddness i can report the career of one of Australia's greatest ever pacers Flashing Red is now over. Cry

Flashing Red was due to be picked up by Ian McMahon from the clinic, and the day he was due to be picked up the infection flared up again. Because of this he did have another joint flush, on Friday his third in the space of two months.

The vets at the Ballarat clinic are now doing their best to try and save him. The situation now is more critical than a month ago as the infection keeps re-occuring and it is now a struggle to find an anti-biotic that will kill this bug.

It's somewhat of a sombre note to end a champion's career as one of his most celebrated victories came in November of last year when he won his second consectutive NZ Cup as a 10 year old. He only raced once more before being struck down with joint trouble just before being targeted towards the Interdominion.

Flashing Red's racing style had always endeared him to the racing public. Not blessed with speed or turn of foot, the horse will be best remembered for the way he always ‘works’ to sit parked outside the leader. Forcing the leader to run amazing sectionals upfront, somehow finding enough courage to finish over the top of his rivals.

The 2007 NZ Cup was a perfect example of this. Taking off three wide from the 1400m, Flashing Red was running into a strong headwind. Sitting without cover the remainder of the race it appeared that the slightly out of form gelding was going to put up the white flag on the corner. Young Monkey King and stablemate Tribute dashed clear. But instead with all sirens blaring, Flashing Red fought back on the inside to score by a margin of a long neck.

The win cannot just be viewed as the defending champion holding off the challengers for another year. He also altered the history books once again. He broke the New Zealand record for two miles by 1.4 seconds with an overall time of 3:57.80. Became the first Australian pacer to win the race back to back. And also claimed the cup off a backmark of 15 metres. The last horse to win from such a handicap was in 1966.
It was a performance that drew emotion from the usually placid Anthony Butt who has only had a small yet vital involvement in the horse for the past 2 seasons. It was under the training of Butt Flashing Red claimed the 2006 edition of the NZ Cup beating home fellow Australian pacer Cobbity Classic to create the first Australian quinella in NZ biggest trotting event.

Thanks for the wonderful memories this horse has provided us over the years. Clap Whether he contested the Fremantle Pacing Cup at an unsuitable Gloucester Park curcuit or a Victoria Cup at the Valley this horse entertained the racing public and will be missed by all. Let's just hope this horse can fight off another battle where he will beat the odds in victory.
