Sounds like Jackson Murphy is significantly worse than first reported:

Jackson Murphy: Jackson's father Tony, reported Jackson had internal bleeding which has now stopped. However, it appears he has split his spleen in half, has bruising on a lung and will remain in John Hunter Hospital for 4-5 days.

I do not want to make this about Michele Payne but I was staggered last night when some people where up in arms over the fact her fall seemed to make major headlines around the nation.

I think rather that it's recognition of the numerous horrific falls she's had & the fact it's pretty commonly known she was warned one more head/neck injury could be catastrophic.
Likely also that she's still grabbing headlines as last years' Cup winner.

Injured NSW Jockeys Report (Latest Update - Six Riders At Taree Tues)

Please be advised six jockeys were involved in a race fall on the home turn at Taree on Tuesday (23rd May).

Bazza's Boy (Samantha Clenton) was the first to come to grief with Blinkin Rules (Jackson Murphy) and Casino Bride (Nyssa Burrells) both falling over the top of that horse. As a consequence, Lady Lobban (Kaylee Kirkwood) and Nonino (Taylor Marshall) were badly interfered with with both jockeys being dislodged.

The latest reports follow, as at 3:15pm (Tuesday):-

1. Samantha Clenton: Has been discharged from Port Macquarie Hospital and is being driven home by her sister Mandy. Samantha is booked in to see Racing NSW's Dr David Duckworth on Wednesday morning and if needed, will have corrective surgery in the afternoon.

2. Jackson Murphy: Will remain in John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle for 4-5 days. Despite being Wauchope-based, his family home is around 30 minutes from the hospital which enables his family to be bedside.

3. Kaylee Kirkwood: Was released from Port Macquarie Hospital last night after X-rays cleared her of serious injuries. Kaylee has been diagnosed with a mild concussion and received stitches to the inside of her calf.

4. Nyssa Burrells: Is in the process of being discharged from hospital and will return home this afternoon.

5. Taylor Marshall: Advised he is stiff and sore but rode trackwork this morning.

6. Travis Wolfgram: Has reported he suffered a split lip when he was hit in the face by his mount avoiding the fall, but is otherwise OK.

*Bazza's Boy fractured a leg in the fall and was humanely euthanzied, while the other horses involved escaped injury.

Michelle Payne undergoes abdominal surgery

Luke Sheehan@LukeDSheehan

5:40pm

, (

Michelle Payne remains in a serious but stable condition, after undergoing surgery on her abdomen on Tuesday following a race fall at Mildura on Monday.

The Melbourne Cup-winning jockey underwent the knife on Tuesday at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, having been transferred from Mildura Base Hospital late on Monday night after coming off the Patrick Payne-trained Dutch Courage.

Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Des O'Keeffe reported Payne will remain in hospital for ‘at least a week, perhaps more’.

"They conducted a number of scans here today, and decided surgery was the best option for her," O'Keeffe said late on Tuesday.

"That surgery's gone well, it was successful.

"Hopefully the recovery from a fit, young athlete starts really well tonight.

"She's heavily sedated at the moment.

"I'm sure she has mixed feelings - happy realising it could've been a lot worse, but also bitterly disappointed given the work she's put in.

"The horse she won the Melbourne Cup on, Prince Of Penzance, running so well on Saturday, and some overseas engagements coming up that'll now be on hold."

Payne was set to take her saddle offshore, having been in line to ride at Royal Ascot and in Ireland, Sweden and France in the coming months.

SYDNEY May 25 2016

Michelle Payne's family will leave a decision on retirement to the jockey who is recovering from abdominal surgery after a race fall.

But her brother Patrick admits it might be hard to convince the Melbourne Cup winner to give away her career.

"We tried to talk her out of it a while ago," Payne told Sky Sports Radio.

"We've encouraged her to retire but it's her decision.

"What more does she have to do?

"But she will make that decision. She is a pig-headed little bugger.

Michelle is the youngest of 10 children, many of whom including Patrick have been successful jockeys.

Now a trainer, Patrick Payne said his sister was in good spirits after the operation on Tuesday, a day after she fell at Mildura.

She came off one of his horses, Dutch Courage, with initial indications that the horse stood on her.

"I spoke to Michelle last night," he said.

"She is in good spirits. She is knocked around a bit but is coping pretty well.

"She is well aware of the dangers but she loves doing it.

"We tried to talk her out of it a while ago and last time she said she would regret it but I'm not sure about her thoughts now."

Her family tried to convince her to give up riding after a March 2004 fall that left her with a fractured skull and bruising to her brain.

In 2012 she broke four vertebrae and several ribs in another fall.

Payne is expected to remain in hospital for at least a week and her recovery will take a couple of months.

Andrew Bensley 39 minutes ago

Also from the Taree fall jockey Jackson Murphy will remain in Newcastle hospital for the rest of the week. Recovering from split spleen.

Another jockey Samantha Clenton is meeting with Racing NSW Dr Duckworth now but it's possible operation on broken collarbone 2pm.
