Positive cocaine swab sours Sweet pursuit

sweet it is

SWEET It Is had her paw on greyhound racing’s holy grail — then the champion returned an irregular drug test to cocaine.

Sweet It Is was to have become world greyhound racing’s first $1 million stakes-earner, a chase that has stalled at $985,550 as stewards in two countries investigate irregular drug tests.

Stewards in New Zealand are still investigating positive tests to caffeine returned by Sweet It Is some months ago.

And Victorian stewards are awaiting the results of secondary samples from positive tests to Benzoylecgonine (a metabolite of cocaine) returned after Sweet It Is won the National Distance Championship at The Meadows in early August.

Connections were notified of the irregularity last weekend.

The race to the million has become greyhound racing’s great feel-good story in an era dogged by scandal, including this year’s revelations of widespread live baiting.

Sweet It Is has her nose in front of fellow champion Fernando Bale, whose stake earnings are at $873,110 and climbing rapidly.

Respected greyhound racing commentator Ron Hawkswell said the Sweet It Is drug drama “has put the brakes on one of the great greyhound stories.’’

“The sport had had a tough time through the live baiting but things were on the up through this amazing race to the $1 million between these two great greyhounds,’’ Hawkswell said.

“These were very exciting times but it seems to have derailed a bit.’’

Sweet It Is was originally trained by Darren McDonald but was transferred to another trainer, Braden Finn, after McDonald was charged with live-baiting offences and put out of the sport.

Experience is something you gain a few minutes after you could have used it!

Not surprised. Start testing Fernando out of comp as well.

Who in animal racing is honest?
