Has this bloke been overseas? I know he gets good rides here but rarely ever wastes them. He is a wasted talent here where jumps will never be a feature sport except maybe 1 day per year

IllAvaAlf After clearing the fifteenth obstacle rider S Pateman was dislodged. An inquiry was opened into this incident. Initial evidence was taken from rider S Pateman and trainer P Ryan. The matter was adjourned accordingly. A post race veterinary examination revealed lacerations to the off fore pastern. A veterinary certificate will be required prior to racing again. Post race swab samples were collected for analysis. S Pateman was examined by the Doctor and deemed fit to fulfil any future engagements. The incident will also be referred to the Jumps Review Panel.

Has his first runner under his dual training/jockey Licence today in Race 7 at Terang. It's a Flat race, so he's not riding.

Took 3 horses to Ballarat today and came away with 3 narrow 2 placings.
He's a great jockey and looks like he might be OK at the training caper too

He seems to have picked up a few new jumpers this season, he’s doing very well. Tom Sadler has been helping him out.

Steven Pateman was granted an adjournment in his cobalt hearing on Monday but not before his barrister attempted to have the hearing suspended on grounds that scientific evidence gathering could be flawed.
Barrister Jim Stavris had applied for an adjournment because of queries concerning the effectiveness of cobalt testing against a background where the Victorian Attorney General and the President of the Court of Appeal had been quoted in newspaper articles expressing concerns about the unreliability of some forensic evidence. Stavris told the board there was concerns over the "adequacy of detecting cobalt at levels that breech the rules". An example of this, he said, was that cobalt testing was done through urine rather than, what he claimed, was the "more relevant" blood samples. Last month, Justice Chris Maxwell, the president of the Court Of Appeal, expressed concerns in Fairfax Media that too much faith was placed in forensic techniques. Stavris also pointed to Victoria’s Attorney General Jill Hennessy’s calling earlier this month of a national review into forensic science. The board dismissed the application on grounds that the board could not hold up the proceedings on the back of two newspaper articles. Pateman was ultimately allowed an adjournment as the RAD Board ruled his legal team did not have enough time to absorb a report from Racing Victoria’s veterinary chief Dr Grace Forbes as the material was not available until last Friday. The champion jumps rider and licenced trainer is facing three cobalt charges – including the most serious charge of deliberately administering cobalt – relating to a positive pre-race test more than two years ago at Coleraine of his jumper Sir Walter Scott. No new date had been confirmed but the board said it was conscious the matter had been open for some time and that dates in late October were available for the board. |

Looks to be in a bit of strife
Champion jumps jockey-turned trainer Steven Pateman and his partner Jess Barton face serious sanctions by Racing Victoria after they were found guilty of raceday administration of cobalt by the RAD Board on Monday. The charge, a breach of AR244, relates to a positive swab returned from a pre-race urine sample taken from the Pateman-trained Sir Walter Scott prior to the horse running in the Great Western Steeplechase at Coleraine in September 2017. The horse failed to finish the race after parting company with jockey Rob David. The sample returned a cobalt reading of 1200 micrograms per litre of urine – six times above the 200 microgram threshold which was in place at the time. In the RAD Board hearing, Racing Victoria’s legal counsel cited a phone conversation between steward Dion Villella, Pateman and Barton in which the trainer acknowledged injecting Sir Walter Scott with several cobalt containing substances - namely VAM, Hemoplex and B12 - on the morning of the race. This was later challenged by the pair, who said the initial statement was taken whilst Pateman was still “pretty drunk” after a night out whilst on holiday in Port Douglas. They later clarified the administration of the treatment did not take place on raceday and produced treatment records to that effect. In its summary, the RAD Board concluded the following: “The bottom line is this. On 13 October, 2017, Mr Pateman and Ms Barton admitted that injections of substances were given to Sir Walter Scott on the morning of 24 September 2017 – race day. The substances contained cobalt. “The reading obtained from the pre-race swab sample was consistent with such an administration. “Thereafter, they attempted to undo their admission and move the blame. First, on 24 October 2017 there was a general denial and lack of co-operation. Then, at some later stage, there emerged drunkenness, tiredness, disruption of sleep and the like as the explanation for the admission. “Next, after a four month delay, there was the belated production of a treatment note amidst some particularly poorly kept records.” The pair, who will be sentenced at a later date by the RAD Board, could face the minimum three year disqualification under AR244. |
