Why is Skating such a magnificant broodmare ?

What do you believe it is about her pedigree that has made her such a success ?

If it's as simple as that Harry, please explain to all of us just why so many other superior females fail to perform as broodmares?

It's hard to soar with eagles...

Being by the mighty At Talaq is certainly a big help.

I always maintained he was a terribly underrated stallion, covering mostly b-grade books in Sth Australia (where he was rated behind Bluebird, Rory's Jester and Scenic) before covering 2 years an the hunter and 1 small crop at Delemere Farm (14 foals) before his untimely death.

Whenever he was given anything of quality he produced something outstanding and frequently upgraded the pages of the mares he served.

Ironically, for a Melbourne Cup and Grand Prix De Paris (3000 metres) winner, he produced some of the most brilliant gallopers we've seen in recent times including Toledo, Al Mansour and Skating.

Toledo and Lovey still hold 1400 metre track records at Eagle Farm and Flemington respectively with Toledo's mark being the Australian record.

At Talaq did show remarkable versatility as a racehorse with Group 1 wins at 1400-3200 metres. He has also done this as a stallion with great sprinters , milers, classic horses and even hurdlers amongst his progeny.

As a broodmare sire he has already produced the top stayer Mummify and looks to have this years best 2yo in Murtajill. He was also a touch unlucky to have a Blue Diamond taken away when Roedean (by Flying Spur) was relegated after a positive swab...that result could have gone the other way.

At Talaq was a lovely individual who was correct and strong if a little Roman nosed. He was not boat like, like a lot of other sons of Roberto and actually exhibited a lot of quality. His most stunning feature was his beautiful shoulder angle which Ken McLean devoted  special comments too in a summary of the horse.

From a personal view, he was also the first horse I ever backed in the Melbourne Cup!!! Whilst I'm only a small punter,  his win created an interest which has resulted in a career and many happy days in the industry.

I'm sure there are more factors at play with Skating, but I'm happy enough with At Talaq's contribution to her foals Smile

Skating to me seems to leave good early types who do not train on. Sunset Run was a sharp sprinter in his early career but he has become very very unreliable as he got older (can show glimpses every now and then).
Bradbury's Luck never reached the same heights after his magic millions win( not a bad race to win if you just wnated to sell him as a stallion) and now it seems as though Murtajill's best days are behind him (jury still out but it does not look good).
Skating has never had a superior performer so she is due to leave a quality group 1 performer(she has the foundation, quality offspring so far) and maybe Murtajill will be it but I do not think so.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise
