If she can do it and Steve Hooker can do it why are all other Aussie athletes 20 lengths off the pace?

You realise that is very hard to answer without lessening Sally's achievements.

I would say most of our best male athletes are plying their trades in other sports.

Yeah, I've heard that. Doubt it. I've never seen an AFL or NRL player that would have won a gold medal if they were in athletics, in my opinion. Who? In what event? For starters, AFL and NRL players aren't fast by athletic standards- none of them can break 10.5 for 100m. Sub 11 pace makes you a fast boofyball player.

How would you know if you've seen someone capable of winning a gold medal in any sport when they don't compete in that sphere? Olympic athletes train for years specifically for their event. There's no overnight natural success based on raw talent.

When they are teenagers instead of concentrating on athletics and improving their speed and technique they are taking high marks and throwing passes.

We are a very small nation, we should not expect world champions every generation in every sport.

The only players in boofyball (afl/nrl/rugby) who had the potential to be Olympic champions are not Australians.Wink

I've got zero doubt that some league players could win the Aussie 100m with some training

Athletics and field events don't have the same public interest as football, certainly plenty of wingers in Rugby League and Union over the years were highly competitive sprinters, but concentrated on a sport that would pay them.

Poor technique, If he concentrated on athletics he could win gold for Fiji.

Does there need to be an excuse ?

What are the KPI for Australian athletics and are they realistic ?

The fact we have one world champion is surely punching above our weight ?

They probably lack the zeal and commitment of a Sally Pearson, who seems to have the competitive spirit in spades.

You have proven my point, Einstein. You had to go back to the 19th century to provide an example of a seriously fast boofyball player.Wink I was trying to remember their names cos they are the only two I could think of too.

That is a whole different era where any sporting endeavour was a sacrifice.

Now, footy or other sports is far more sustainable and a more likely career option.

I doubt that, she just has more talent, an athlete with less talent can be committed in spades, still will not reach the pinnacle

Wonderful effort from the young Lady Sally.
Has battled injury over a long period and was able to overcome all that to take World Gold .

CONGRATULATIONS.

Of course talent is a pre-requisite, but unless you have the drive to put it into effect, you will not get there. Same as just about anything in life. The difference between a good athlete and a champ may be no more than sheer determination to succeed

It is the same in any sport.

How many blokes from the NRL under 21s make it to first grade yet just to get into that under age competition they have to be the best of their age.

There is rarely any questioning of their talent.

I'm tipping there are heaps of young blokes who have lots of football talent, but get side-tracked by distractions, and when a little older, bitterly regret their lack of application. The top players have old heads on young shoulders.
