Rather prefer his adversary Saxon Warrior as a down-under shuttler.

Roaring Lion has plenty of blood we have seen before.  Knightly Manner, Street Cry, El Prado line, Street Sense.  Plenty that has worked and hasn't worked so once again it boils down to the horse.  Hope he makes it as I love a grey.  The other boy is another Deep Impact.  We are having alot of them come at the moment.  Will be interesting to see which ones work.  Noticed at the sales so many of the Redoute's this season had Deep Impact dams.  Certainly an outcross for him but without many of the catches I like to see in a mare put to Redoute's.  If it works then the stallions have a chance in reverse.   All the breeders can do is bring the best they can and hope for the best.  High Chaparral and Street Cry need replacements.

Definitely like him better for New Zealand than Australia.  He'll be an interesting fit for the Zabeel/Sir T mares, what with the line to Fanfreluche.  Would be interesting to send him mares with Beautiful Crown.

His female line reminds me of Spirit of Boom...just like Dane Shadow (somehow) massively upgraded Temple Spirit, Afleet massively upgraded Ultrafleet.

Four-time Group I winner and shuttle stallion Roaring Lion is recovering from emergency colic surgery in New Zealand on Saturday.

Roaring Lion was released from quarantine at 6am on Saturday morning after arriving from the UK and had only spent 15 minutes turned out in his paddock at Cambridge Stud when he displayed signs of colic.

Transferred to Cambridge Equine Hospital, he underwent emergency surgery which was successful.

“Following major surgery, we feel it is appropriate to withdraw the horse from service with all shareholders being fully refunded,” Cambridge Stud chief executive office Henry Plumptre said in a statement.

“Our best-case scenario is that Roaring Lion makes a full recovery and can be returned safely to the U.K.

“While everyone at Cambridge Stud is shattered, we feel the obligation to Sheikh Fahad, David Redvers and our shareholders is important. It is a massive blow to lose Roaring Lion like this, but his ongoing welfare is now our prime concern.”

Roaring Lion won eight of his 13 starts, notably the Eclipse, Irish Champion, Juddmonte International and Queen Elizabath Stakes at Group I level and was rated the Champion 3YO Colt in Europe in 2018.

The son of Kittens Joy had completed his first season at Tweenhills Stud in the UK and was scheduled to cover at Cambridge Stud this coming southern hemisphere season.

Veterinary advice Sunday morning is that Roaring Lion has made a favourable recovery in the first 24 hours post-surgery.

He had a second surgery today.  Unfortunately given that it was a small intestine twist and he needed another surgery, the likelihood of him recovering is very dire indeed.

Roaring Lion Update From Henry

A week ago there was a sense of anticipation at Cambridge Stud with our European champions Almanzor and Roaring Lion arriving last Saturday morning. Unfortunately, their arrival has been overshadowed by a sudden and acute colic episode that struck Roaring Lion shortly after his arrival from quarantine. It has been well documented that the horse was rushed to Cambridge Equine Hospital and underwent emergency colic surgery on Saturday morning. His recovery from that surgery appeared to be going well although there were occasional signs of discomfort. However, his condition deteriorated early on Thursday morning and his veterinary team decided that they needed a second operation to clear whatever it was that was bothering him. The second operation was performed at 9.00am on Thursday morning removing a damaged section of small intestine containing two adhesions. Following the surgery, Roaring Lion spent most of yesterday in his box in intensive care and he was monitored by the Cambridge Equine team throughout the night.

It is a testament to the horse’s courage and character that he is making steady progress from that second operation and, although he has a mountain to climb, we are cautiously happy with his progress. He is bright, alert and interested in everything that is going on around him. He has been out for two short walks, had a very small pick of grass and appears relaxed, showing good clinical signs.

We have made mention of the fact that it is unlikely that Roaring Lion will cover in New Zealand, if he gets to resume his career in the northern hemisphere. There is however a very strong connection between Cambridge Stud, Roaring Lion and his owner Sheikh Fahad and manager David Redvers. We are determined to leave no stone unturned in getting the horse back to full health in order that he can board the plane for the U.K. at the end of the breeding season. We have a totally dedicated team at Cambridge Stud in a supporting role at the moment and a superb team of surgeons and vets who are helping the horse in the battle of his life. Our thanks go to everyone at the Cambridge Equine Centre and, on a wider note, to everyone who has sent messages of support regarding the horse. We will keep you all updated over the next few days and hopefully weeks.

Henry

Unfortunately, another colic attack. Was humanely euthanised. Such a loss for Cambridge and connections in UK

Racing fans were left numb on Friday evening after it was announced that two of the sport’s young stars had lost their lives.

Soon after the announcement that five-year-old Champion Hurdle winner Espoir D’Allen had been put to sleep because of injuries suffered in a freak accident came the news that multiple Group One winner Roaring Lion had lost his brave fight against colic.

The death of the latter, after just one year as a stallion, will deprive the sport of seeing what thousands of his offspring might have been capable of over many years to come.

He had huge potential as a sire and will leave a massive void at Tweenhills, in Gloucestershire, where he stood.

Trained by John Gosden to win the Eclipse, Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes last year, the son of Kitten's Joy appeared to be on the road to recovery after twice undergoing surgery for colic in recent weeks.

Owned by Qatar Racing, Roaring Lion covered his first book of mares in the spring, but it was when he was shipped to New Zealand to stand at Cambridge Stud the problem first emerged.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, David Redvers of Tweenhills Stud said: "At approximately midday today Roaring Lion was observed to be uncomfortable in his stable at Cambridge Stud. On examination by stud vet Rob Hitchcock, Roaring Lion was admitted to Cambridge Equine hospital

There operating surgeons Dr Alanna Zantingh and Dr Greg Quinn performed ultrasound examination and at 2.45pm the decision was made on welfare grounds to put Roaring Lion to sleep."

The brilliant grey was one of the stars of last year. In addition to his four Group One wins, he won the Dante and was also third in the Derby after contesting the Craven and 2000 Guineas.

He was as tough and talented as they come and was named Cartier Horse of the Year.

"I am obviously distraught about Roaring Lion, he was so brave right to the end," owner Sheikh Fahad said. "He was a horse of a lifetime in all his characteristics I would like to thank everyone at the Cambridge Equine hospital and Cambridge Stud for all their efforts and professionalism to the end."

Retired to the breeding sheds at the end of last year, his first covering season passed without incident before he was shipped to New Zealand to cover mares from there and Australia at the renowned Cambridge Stud in Waikato.

There was tremendous demand for his services and Cambridge Stud announced at the end of May that his book was closed.

Redvers had spoken about him “creating a legacy for New Zealand”. However, his trip to the other side of the world ended in tragedy.

Released from quarantine at 6am, he had spent just 15 minutes in his paddock at Cambridge Stud when symptoms of colic first became apparent.

Five hours after having surgery, Roaring Lion was said to have made a “favourable recovery”. Redvers flew out to New Zealand to be at his side and monitor his progress.

Surgeons untwisted the section of the gut that was causing the problem, repaired a small hole and flushed everything through.

Unfortunately, Roaring Lion required a second operation a few days later but again seemed to be on the road to recovery.

Last week, his connections released a video outlining full details of his colic operations and battle for life.

Today, the beautiful grey lost that battle.

Earlier this summer, Sea Of Class, a two-time Group 1 winner who was beaten a short neck by Enable in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe last year, died 19 days after initially undergoing colic surgery.

Espoir D'Allen had been a rare five-year-old winner of the Champion Hurdle in March. And what a winner he was, breezing home by 15 lengths in a contest where few could look beyond Buveur D'Air, Apple's Jade and Laurina.

Superbly handled by the modest, quietly spoken Gavin Cromwell, he lost only one of his nine races over jumps. Given his age and ability, he might have reigned for years had fate dealt him a better hand.

Hope for all concerned that the one crop in England comes out to deliver some top grey gallopers.  So sad when this happens at anytime for any horse but I can't help but love the greys.
