I love all the hype about SKY going free to air around the Country areas.

I'm surprised no one has advertised the 10% increase to their paying customers.

That would have been expected macca, and part of the grand plan - giving them a free taste was always going to get them some subrcribers (particularly if they only had ABC) - that's why the pushers give it away free at schools.

Past catches up with McGowan in TAB sale

Trying to follow the political discourse on whether the TAB in WA should be sold to a private bidder has been like trying to pin the tail on a donkey blindfolded after a bottle of red.

Last week, after his Government announced the betting agency was finally on the market, Premier Mark McGowan got all surly because he felt the media, along with the Liberals and Nationals, were twisting comments he made in 2016.

Back in June that year, the then Opposition leader put out a statement questioning whether the Barnett government planned to flog the TAB and allow new gaming machines, including “pokies”, to operate in this State as a sweetener to any deal.

McGowan was reacting to what he saw as conflicting commentary between the racing minister at the time, Nationals MP Colin Holt, and premier Colin Barnett.

“Mr Holt confirmed the government was still proceeding with negotiations over Keno and electronic horse racing with the racing industry and potential purchasers of the TAB,” the Labor leader said in his statement.

The electronic horse racing McGowan referred to is called Trackside and allows punters to wager on simulated racing at TABs as well as the real thing. Trackside machines are common over east.

“Just this morning, the premier claimed his government would not introduce Keno or Trackside electronic horse racing in TABs or country pubs and clubs, yet his minister has told Parliament the government is still actively considering the option,” the 2016 McGowan statement continued.

Move forward to last Tuesday, when current Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia and Treasurer Ben Wyatt announced that electronic racing machines, like Trackside, would be permitted in WA to help get top dollar for the TAB sale. All hell broke loose in Parliament as the Premier was accused of blatant double standards because of his 2016 remarks.“Would the Premier please explain to this House and the people of Western Australia why he has changed his mind on the Trackside product?” posed Liberal leader Mike Nahan. “In the past he opposed it absolutely. Now he is proposing to introduce it throughout TAB outlets throughout the State.”

McGowan was indignant.

“What we see from the Liberal Party in Western Australia is that it makes things up,” he said. “The Leader of the Opposition is an expert at finding something I said about issue X, pretending it was about issue Y.”

But it was not just Labor’s traditional political enemies that were calling the Premier out over the electronic horse racing green light.

“In WA, simulated racing products are currently only available within Crown’s Burswood casino,” said public sector union the CPSU/CSA. “We’re concerned that its extension to other locations will have implications for the incidence of problem gambling in our State.”

The Premier and his minders insisted that back in 2016, the only concern McGowan had was over Keno or pokie machines being a component of a TAB sell-off. They were playing down the Labor leader’s references to Trackside.

“All my commentary on this was based on long experience as someone who grew up in New South Wales and saw poker machines and the evils that they promote,” McGowan told Parliament.

Without wanting to further ruffle the Premier, he did mention “Trackside”, “electronic horse racing” or “gaming machine expansion” eight times in that 2016 rebuke of the Barnett government.Given his Government committed last week to allowing a restricted version of simulated or electronic racing in TAB outlets to encourage a buyer, the Premier should not be too surprised his previous words were used against him.

The truth of the matter is that by permitting the simulated racing machines in TABs, the Government is dangling a carrot to one potential buyer — Tabcorp.

The Eastern States gambling colossus is the only company in Australia that operates electronic racing in venues and the name of its product is Trackside.

Further to what was said back in 2016, Labor’s gloating last week about finally resolving the impasse on selling the TAB — and achieving what they said the Liberals and Nationals could not — was bound to raise the hackles of the current Opposition.

John McGrath, the Liberal spokesman on racing, could not help himself before giving his support to the long-awaited TAB privatisation.

“It’s interesting the McGowan Government says this ends years of uncertainty for the racing industry,” McGrath told reporters last week. “I find that unbelievable. This is one of the biggest backflips in the history of our Parliament.”

McGrath was referring to Labor’s previous strident opposition to selling the TAB at a time when growing competition was putting the agency’s value and relevancy in jeopardy.

In fact, the word strident is perhaps not strong enough with McGowan moving a motion in mid-2015 to oppose the sale, with Papalia in fierce agreement.

“The opposition is very clear in its position on this important issue for jobs, the racing industry and regional communities,” McGowan told Parliament. “If we have Tatts Group or Tabcorp running the industry in WA what will be the first thing that it will do? It will look to cut costs. They will see what services run in WA can be run over there. A call centre can just as easily be run in Melbourne as it is in Perth.”McGowan was not finished there in arguing against selling the TAB.

“Jobs could very well be lost,” he said. “Actually, let us be frank. They will be lost if the TAB is sold.”

Papalia echoed the resistance that day.

“The government cannot guarantee the disbursements ... once the TAB has been sold,” he said. “Once it has been sold we will lose control. Ultimately, industry shareholders on the east coast will benefit and our product will suffer.”

Sometimes history can be rewritten and sometimes history — like a quality thoroughbred — catches up with you.The West Australian

This is field day stuffLOL

Fallen PMs always blame the media, never look in the mirror

Every prime minister since John Howard has left office blaming the media at least partly for their downfall. That's all four of them - Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull.

But here's the question. How many of them, when they assumed the prime ministership, acknowledged the media for playing a part in their rise? The answer: None. When a politician is elevated to the prime ministership, it's because of their native genius. Only when they lose power do they attribute any influence whatsoever to the media.

It's not that the media is blameless. The media is guilty of just about every charge levelled against it. It's just that the media, by and large, behaves the same way through time.

The late British politician Enoch Powell put it well: "Politicians who complain about the media are like ships' captains who complain about the sea."In his book that publishes today, Kevin Rudd gives his version of his downfall at the hands of his deputy, Julia Gillard, and the "faceless men" of the Labor factions. He then devotes attention to one particular piece of reporting. It's the news article that Gillard and her henchmen seized upon as the trigger for the coup.Rudd writes: "When I arrived in the office, Alister [Jordan] greeted me with the front page of The Sydney Morning Herald. My chief of staff, always unflappable, was shaken. He had just got off the phone from Gillard. The subject of the conversation was an article by Peter Hartcher, the Herald’s political and international editor, with the headline: Rudd’s secret polling on his leadership.

"It claimed Alister had been ringing around the parliamentary party the day before asking for pledges of support against a leadership challenge from Gillard. He told me that Gillard was “beside herself” at the idea that her loyalty had been called into question.

"The real problem, however, was that the story wasn’t true. Nonetheless, the briefing of the story was a clever play by those who had done so, given that Hartcher had long been seen in the press gallery as close to me. Whatever the truth of my relationship with Peter Hartcher – and it was infinitely more complex than that – the impression had been given that someone close to me had deliberately leaked the story."Later in the book, Rudd calls my article, co-bylined with Phillip Coorey, now political editor at The Australian Financial Review, "spectacularly damaging" and "spectacularly inaccurate". Gillard was prime minister the next day.

Rudd calls it "the coup that killed politics". He says that Australian politics has yet to recover as it lurches madly from one prime ministerial coup to another eight years later. So if my story was the catalyst for so momentous a change in national politics, I should address his claim that it was false.

The piece, published on a Wednesday, began: "When Kevin Rudd talked confidently on Monday about the strength of Labor support for his leadership it was not based solely on bravado - he has been discreetly checking that his party is still behind him.

"The Herald has learnt from a number of MPs that the Prime Minister's most trusted lieutenant, his chief of staff, Alister Jordan, has been talking privately to almost half the caucus to gauge whether Mr Rudd has the support of his party."e story went on to say that Jordan's soundings had been "conducted in the past month with Mr Rudd's knowledge".

My sources for the piece have always been the subject of intense speculation. Each side has always blamed the other for "leaking" or "briefing" the story to me. I have never discussed the sourcing with anyone. That's because I spoke to my sources in confidence, agreed to protect their identities, and have kept my word. One Labor MP, Michael Danby, who is closely aligned with Bill Shorten, years ago claimed to another newspaper that he had been a source for my story. I have never commented.I will, however, make these observations. Politicians generally are given to tribalism and conspiracy. So they assume that journalists are tribal and conspiratorial, too. And some are, though these are usually people that are not considered journalists by the profession at large but are regarded as political or ideological provocateurs and campaigners.

Most Canberra press gallery reporters are professional and strive for objectivity. The truth in this case is unexcitingly straightforward. The story was not "leaked" or "briefed" by one side to the exclusion of the other. You can reasonably assume that, on a story such as this, an experienced reporter would check with sources on both sides, among Rudd's loyalists as well as Gillard's. Which is exactly what I did. Both sides provided supporting evidence.

In support of his claim, Rudd cites an ABC documentary on his downfall, The Killing Season. This program's researchers said that they called many members of the caucus to ask if Jordan had talked to them to test support for Rudd. They reported that "only two out of 72 caucus members we contacted described having a conversation" along those lines with Jordanhis is a ridiculous exercise. Consider this. You are a Labor MP. An ABC TV researcher whom you probably have never met calls you out of the blue one day. He or she asks if you would like to admit to being a possible source for the story that was used to destroy a first-term Labor prime minister and set off years of bitter recriminations. What would you do? Say yes? Or politely decline to comment? The only surprise here is that two caucus members did confirm the conversations to an unknown ABC researcher.

Rudd says unabashedly in his book that he writes it to offer the "alternative narrative" to the one told by Gillard and the Labor mainstream. He wants to establish that he was blameless in every regard. That Gillard and the plotters are solely responsible.

As part of that, it suits him to claim that my piece was part of the conspiracy against him. It wasn't. It was reporting. It's what we do.

Peter Hartcher is political editor.

wONDER WHY THE BOOK WASNT RELEASED BEFORE THE WENTWORTH ELECTION?LOL

I offered Turnbull a climate envoy job, says Rudd

Kevin Rudd has revealed he offered to make a wounded Malcolm Turnbull his personal envoy on climate change, in the aftermath of the 2009 Liberal leadership spill.

The former Labor prime minister said the former member for Wentworth did not accept the offer but said it was one of the kindest gestures made to him in politics and kinder than anything said to him from his colleagues on his own side.

Mr Rudd reveals their conversation in his new book The PM Years in which he argues the 2010 coup in which Julia Gillard toppled him for the leadership in the middle of the night with the backing of the party's union bosses was the coup that killed Australian politics and set off the never-ending revolving door of prime ministers.

Mr Turnbull's prime ministership came to an end in similar fashion in August when right-wing forces within the Liberal Party attempted to replace him with the conservative Peter Dutton. Ultimately the job went to Scott Morrison.

It was not the first time Mr Turnbull experienced his colleagues' rejection. In 2009, his leadership of the Liberal Party, then in opposition, ended in catastrophe when he was replaced by Tony Abbott, primarily on climate change policy, but also after Mr Turnbull had spectacularly relied on a fake email to accuse Mr Rudd of wrongdoing in the so-called Godwin Grech scandal.Mr Rudd says it was after this, in the summer of 2009-2010, when Mr Turnbull came to see him at Kirribilli "for a chat". Mr Turnbull told Mr Rudd he planned to resign from politics and return to his business career.

"He expressed what I believed was genuine remorse for what had happened in June and apologised for his part in it," Mr Rudd recounted.

"I accepted his apology. Too many people become embittered in politics and take every grudge with them to the grave. I wasn’t about to hold this one over his head."

Mr Rudd said Mr Turnbull seemed "genuinely humbled" "and was now seeking a new path" and wanted to remain active on climate change.

"So I said to him that if indeed he left politics, he should consider becoming the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy on Climate Change.

"There was a lot of work to be done in the years ahead.  Turnbull was taken aback.  He said that nobody in the Liberal Party had ever shown him any kindness, let alone somebody from the other side of politics whom he’d just tried to take out.

"He agreed to think about it ... I never heard back from Turnbull regarding the offer."

In April that year Mr Turnbull announced he was quitting politics but later "unresigned" and went on to seize the prime ministership from Mr Abbott in 2015.

Mr Rudd says his offer to Mr Turnbull made it all the more galling when Mr Turnbull reneged on his promise to endorse Mr Rudd to nominate as Australia's candidate for the United Nations secretary-general in 2015."Five years later, the boot would be on the other foot. Turnbull, then as prime minister, would urge me to be the Australian candidate for UN secretary-general.

"He authorised foreign minister Julie Bishop to begin running an international diplomatic campaign in support. But Turnbull, a weak man as shown in the Godwin Grech affair, nine months later would then capitulate to political pressure from Abbott, Dutton and the far right, leaving Bishop’s campaign high and dry, while pretending to have never supported my candidature in the first place.

"Turnbull has long had a problem with the truth," Mr Rudd concluded.

Mr Rudd likened Mr Turnbull to Ms Gillard, his leadership rival, and says they both occupied the prime ministership for no reason other than "being there" and were devoid of their own ideas, philosophies and beliefs on how to advance Australia.

John Howard's book mightily attempted to re-write history to his benefit.

Rudd does nothing less and clearly appears to be suffering from an ailment related to attention deficit disorder.

I see that Bullgelati Bill is out buying votes again!

Now all of you HOME BUYERS and SELF FUNDED RETIREES who have made the sacrifices and done the hard yards, you know where your new taxes are going ... filling the TAB accounts of those "aspirational" DOLE BLUDGERS!Dead

His faithful base merely need ask, and they shall receive!

Who knew there was an ...

AUSTRALIAN UNEMPLOYED WORKER'S UNION
(I wonder who pays for their Union Fees ... oh, of course!Ouch)

IT’S TIME! RAISE NEWSTART!

The movement to raise Newstart payments is taking off. Here are four actions you can take.

1. Sign the petition (click here to sign)

Ask Bill Shorten to commit to increasing Newstart to the poverty line.

Anyone with a sense of justice and humanity realises It’s Time to raise Newstart payments. Except Bill Shorten. He wants a “root and branch review of Newstart.” We don’t need a review to be sure living 30% below the poverty line is stressful, isolating, and a daily grind.

Let Shorten know what it’s like to survive on a Newstart payment of $40 per day. Assure him he doesn’t need a review, he simply needs to commit to raising the rate.

More than 3,000 people have already signed. We need thousands more. Add your signature too.

http://unemployedworkersunion.com/raise-newstart-now/

So naturally it would follow ...

Labor could increase 'too low' Newstart Allowance

Bill Shorten has given a strong indication a Labor Government could increase the dole, ahead of policy debate at the party's national conference in December.

Mr Shorten told the Today Show he would review the Newstart Allowance that he believes is "too low".

"You don't review something to cut it," Mr Shorten said.

https://www.9news.com.au/2018/10/31/08/06/bill-shorten-labor-review-newstart-allowance

He also believes that the hard working aspirational Mum and Dad Home Buyers and Self Funded Retirees are making "too much".

I saw that smug oxygen thief Tanya Plibersek, couldn't bring herself to just say that the Virgin Air idea to offer Returned Service men and women - a simple acknowledgement and "thank you" gesture for your service - optional priority boarding on plane trips - what a great idea! - no big deal, costs nothing, might offer these people who suffer from some of the highest rates of mental illness in the country, people we should all be forever indebted to, something more than just a day to play two up and get pissed, so why not?

Well of course the left do not even like to acknowledge our history, and least of all our military history, let alone talk about it, honour it or teach it!

So her response was predictable, that it wouldn't be fair to all of those other people in our society who risk their lives every day, like nurses and doctors and ambos amd police ...

Really? ... not sure how many nurses come home missing a leg after they step on a land mine in the maternity ward, or how many doctors are confronted by 9 year old suicide bombers in their rooms?

She was on the news again today, I don't know or care what she was virtue signalling about, but it did prompt me to ask ... Where's Billy?

I want him to talk me through how much money his negative gearing and CGT tinkering will cost me, and every other property owner in the country?

This will be his GST Birthday Cake ... mark my words.

You mean the empty, cost nothing, publicity seeking gesture by Virgin ? Confused

Virgin Australia to rethink priority boarding for veterans after policy criticised as 'tokenistic'

Virgin Australia will rethink a pledge to give veterans priority boarding, after the plan was described as "embarrassing" and "tokenistic".

Neil James, the head of the Australian Defence Association, called the move "tokenistic" and described it as a manifestation of American culture that was unlikely to translate well in Australia.

Speaking of Mick Fanning, when is ScoMo from Cronulla going to wax his board and hit the surf? What a fantastic photo opportunity.Thumbs Up

Is Daniel Andrews a naive moron ?  Rhetorical question

Victoria signs up to the BRI: what didn’t they know and when didn’t they know it?

I think it is a good idea and the other states will follow even if the Federal Govt doesn't. They(Federal) are in China at the moment trying to patch things up after some major missteps in recent months.

Andrews is just getting his state in front of the inevitable. This is why he is now a $1.25 fav for reelection this year after trailing.

It might not have been necessary had Trump not blown up the TPP, forcing everyone to make other arrangements, at least till there is a sane administration in Washington that we can get onboard with.

He is a mug, let's just give China everything they want for instant financial gratification. I guess Andrews needs to pay for his infrastructure spending.

Why is he keeping details secret ?

I thought they were only at the MOU stage when I saw this a couple of weeks ago. Details wouldn't have been settled yet, there has only been an intention to talk.

It is the same with the TPP. Intentions were set down in 2010, but by 2016 when US withdrew things still weren't settled, countries hadn't signed, and nobody was releasing details of their positions.

These things take a long time.

Pt the resident chinaman.

you can be understanding, when it suits.

Labor governments are good at keeping secrets; use a platform promoting transparency, but thats for the other mob. The same stuff is happening in Western Australia.

China knows how to get to peoples egos.

Labor will have australia signed up to china, quick smart.
