Bill Shorten branded a hypocrite over ‘know-it-all whitefella’ comments

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has been accused of hypocrisy and slammed as “the most paternalistic whitefella” following remarks he made on a visit to the Northern Territory.

Mr Shorten yesterday declared too many indigenous children were being taken away from their families, highlighting his promise to hold a summit to tackle the issue in the first 100 days of a Labor government.

Visiting the Northern Territory community of Barunga, east of Katherine, the Labor leader hit out at “know-it-all whitefellas” who “come in paternalistic”, reiterating a promise first made in February to hold a gathering of indigenous leaders, healthcare workers and families to discuss problems and give indigenous Australians “self-determination” over the issue.

“The last thing they need is some know-it-all whitefella to come in paternalistic, as has been happening for 200 years, and say, ‘listen you’re just children and we’ll just fix it all for you’,” Mr Shorten said.

“Too many indigenous kids are being taken away from their families. In the last 10 years the number has doubled to about 17,000 or 18,000.

“When you take kids away from their connection to culture and country, to language and to family, you make the chances of their success steeper and steeper. The climb is steeper and steeper.

But Indigenous leader Jacinta Price hit out at Mr Shorten’s comments, saying he was “full of hypocrisy” and “utterly removed” from the reality of indigenous dysfunction.

“He has come through as the most paternalistic whitefella who is completely removed from the circumstances that these children live in,” she said.

The Alice Springs councillor and Liberal candidate for the Northern Territory seat of Lingiari said the Opposition Leader had not listened to Aboriginal women like herself and those in Tennant Creek, who had called for children to be removed from dangerous situations after a toddler was raped in the town in February, having remained with her family despite 52 notifications to child protection services.

“He is utterly removed from any kind of dysfunctional Aboriginal culture and his children sleep safe at night in bed,” Ms Price said.

“He’s clearly demonstrated that he does not have the children’s rights and wellbeing first and foremost.

“He cares more for the dysfunctional adults of the children’s families who do not deserve to parent these children.”

Mr Shorten said his call to find ways for children to stay with their families did not mean the challenges or problems in keeping families together should be ignored.

“Raising kids is hard enough for anyone,” he said.

“It takes more than parents to do it these days.

“But it seems to me that we’ve got to be smarter than starting a new round of taking children away from their parents.

“Personally, as a parent I would be horrified at the prospect that because, er, that I could have my kids taken away from me, yet for too many Aboriginal mums that’s the very real prospect they wake up with even now, and we can do better.

“That’s why we’re going to tackle it in our first 100 days.”

Yep, Bull Schitten, as The Human Headline refers to him, is the gift that will save Malcolm TurnGreen ... how's that for irony - so even in defeat, he will still manage to be bad for our country!Ouch

Seriously Bill, consistently leaving pre-school aged indigenous babies with STD's, who have been raped to within an inch of their lives, in the care of the perpetrators "for cultural reasons" is good virtue signalling policy ... even if you think it makes you look like a "Good Whitefella"?

Even I didn't think this gormless unlikable stooge would go that low ... it is of course probable, since he has no self awareness, that he doesn't even realise what he says, nor care!

... and then this came to mind ...

" ... I don't know what she said, but I support what she said ... well, I'm sure she's right."Embarrassed

Sad to say DOC but I doubt the LNP can win with Turnbull as leader .

Shortens team will sexually assault Australia but it looks like a labor Victory coming up.

Tlaz, I think a hint to her politics was exposed by an article in The Spectator(yes them) last year titled ''The bravery of Jacinta Price'' where it describes her as being the daughter of a NT Liberal Party Minister and her first mainstream interviews were on Andrew Bolt, Sky and Alan Jones.

Well Max , Labor seems to be doing their level best to lose the unlosable election! They don't seem to understand that their core base is politically hard left but socially conservative. Apparently they missed the anti Gay marriage vote amongst their base. Especially in a Western Sydney . Labor is so busy sucking up to the Greens for their preferences that they're ignoring how pissed off their base is . I think they're in trouble in the seats they picked up last election because a lot of people are looking for a third party to vote for. That's what happens when you take your own voters for granted.

Does the federal govt still have legislative control over the NT?

If children are being raped up there and the NT govt isn't doing something about it, shouldn't Mr Turnbull step in and fix? What does it have to do with Mr Shorten? He wont be Prime Minister till after the next election.

Sky News Northern Australia correspondent Matt Cunningham challenged Mr Shorten over the wisdom of opposing child removals, citing the horrific rape of a Tennant Creek toddler in February who had remained with her family despite 52 notifications to child protection services.

Mr Shorten said it wasn’t an “either/or” issue.

“I did say that the solution doesn’t mean you ignore the problems,” he said.

“That of course is just shocking, what you described. There’s no excuse, and the fact that the system failed to pick up the problems is a disaster, but I’m also saying to you surely the solution isn’t just the wholesale moving of kids away from their extended families and the land on which they should have a connection with.

“Surely we are smarter than: either leave a kid in vulnerable and dangerous circumstances, or totally excise their relationships from region and country.

“The status quo is not acceptable as you quite rightly say, but the solution is too blunt as well, and in too many cases it creates further problems which you were trying to solve in the first place.”

Asked what his government would do to address the problem, Mr Shorten said he would get the “smartest people in the nation together” and get indigenous Australians in the room.

“The last thing they need is some know-it-all whitefella to come in paternalistic, as has been happening for 200 years, and say, ‘listen you’re just children and we’ll just fix it all for you’,” Mr Shorten said.

“Unless you have the people about whom you’re making the decisions in a position to be part of the decision-making, I guarantee you, failure.”

Mundine says Shorten ‘hasn’t a clue’ about indigenous life

Indigenous leader Warren Mundine has dismissed Bill Shorten’s claim that too many Aboriginal children are being removed from their families as “a load of garbage”, saying the Opposition Leader “doesn’t have a friggin’ clue” what is going on in remote communities.

At the weekend, Mr Shorten highlighted his promise to hold a summit within the first 100 days of a Labor government to tackle the issue of indigenous child protection, hitting out at “know-it-all whitefellas” who “come in paternalistic” in their approach to indigenous affairs.

Mr Shorten made the comments during a visit to the Northern Territory community of Barunga, east of Katherine.

Mr Mundine, a former federal ALP president, said Mr Shorten was a “living example” of the kind of “whitefella” he was criticising.

“The man is a complete fool and it’s a disgrace that this guy is actually running for prime minister of this country when he’s just talking of more reviews,” Mr Mundine said. “I’m quite happy to sit down and have a conversation about it and save him the trouble of another talkfest.”

In February, a toddler was raped in Tennant Creek, having remained with relatives despite the family being the subject of 52 notifications to child protection services over 16 years.

“In the last few weeks we’ve seen the violent abuse of Aboriginal children that is happening out there, and we know that is only the tip of the iceberg because we’ve had about 40 reviews nationally on these areas since about 2004,” Mr Mundine said. “I’ve sat on several of those and, quite frankly I’m very, very angry in regard to Bill Shorten’s response. I found it a load of garbage and he needs to get his facts right.”

Indigenous Labor MP Linda Burney defended Mr Shorten, saying an opinion piece by former ALP powerbroker Graham Richardson, published in The Australianyesterday, was “disgracefully inaccurate” in claiming Mr Shorten had suggested leaving indigenous children in vulnerable circumstances.

“In Australia today, more First Nations children are in out-of-home care than ever before,” Ms Burney said. “The rate of removal of these children is the highest it has even been and, as we know, too many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are ending up in juvenile justice institutions. This issue is complex and few would claim to have the answers.”

Ms Burney cited her previous role as a minister with responsibility for child protection in the NSW government.

“I understand as well as anyone this wicked policy challenge,” she said. “It means looking at the reasons underpinning child removal rates, and identifying why there has been such a significant increase since the apology (to the Stolen Generations in 2008).

“It doesn’t mean — as suggested by yesterday’s article — turning a blind eye to the social problems, simply to drive down child removal rates. On the contrary, it means tackling these things head-on and having an honest conversation about how this situation changes.”

“Unless you have the people about whom you’re making the decisions in a position to be part of the decision-making, I guarantee you, failure.”
