Warrnambool trainer Maddie Raymond is set to saddle up her first runner at Caulfield on Wednesday - a horse boasting a win over one-time Melbourne Cup favourite Constantinople.
The galloper, Wentwood, will kick-off his Australian racing career in race eight - a BM70 Handicap over 1400m.
A five-year-old son of Pour Mois, Wentwood raced under the expert tutelage of Dermot Weld in Ireland before owner Glyn Davies decided a change of scenery was in order for the gelding.
"I've been good friends with Glyn Davies over the years. I've worked with some of his horses and he was really keen to send one over to me when I got my licence," Raymond told Punters.
Wentwood has taken some time to acclimatise to Australian conditions, but looked sharp winning an 800m jump-out at Stawell on January 7.
After stepping just evenly from the stalls, Wentwood moved up to join the pacesetter about three-off the fence before running to a clear lead around the home bend.
A two-length buffer at the top of the straight quickly became about six, with Wentwood romping away from his rivals to score in a slick time of 47.15 seconds - not far off Begood Toya Mother's winning time in a different heat on the same morning.
"It was a little unexpected," Raymond said of Wentwood's jump-out performance.
"It was a big question mark going to the trials because he's taken a little while to get settled over here.
"He's still got a fair bit of improvement to come so I was pretty happy with how he trialled."
Wentwood defeated Constantinople - fourth in last year's Caulfield Cup (2400m) - over 2048m at Cork back in April last year, but Raymond doesn't think punters should get too carried away with that.
"I know he beat Constantinople but it was Wentwood's preferred trip and Constantinople was using that as a bit of a starting point for his prep - plus he got held up - so we don't want to hype him up too much."
Raymond doesn't have any set plans for Wentwood beyond Wednesday, but believes we'll see his best between a mile and 2000m.
"He's still got his winter coat on him, so we'll just run him at Caulfield and reassess after that.
"I might tip him back out for a little break but it will just depend on how he runs basically - you can't rush things with these imports.
"Glyn (Davies) and Dermot Weld think he's a genuine 2000m horse but I think he might be a bit sharper than that.
"The racing here is a fair bit different to the racing over there and his work so far has shown that he would be competitive over 1200m first-up but we're going to 1400m."
Although new to running her own stable, Raymond has a solid grounding in the racing game and is currently working as Lindsey Smith's assistant trainer at his Warrnambool base.
"Lindsey's very easy-going and easy to work for. He's a brilliant horseman - I've learnt a lot from him," Raymond said.
Wentwood is one of only two horses Raymond has in work, but the young horsewoman is in no great rush to expand her stable.
"I'll just poke around with the two I've got and stick with Lindsey. I still have plenty to learn but hopefully Wentwood can get the ball rolling on Wednesday."

Interesting story.
I’m actually surprised she’s allowed to have her very first runner competing at a metropolitan track. Didn’t there used to be different grades of training licence that stipulated a trainer had to have a certain number of starters at provincial/country meets before being allowed to start a horse in town ?
Anyways, good luck to Maddie with Wentwood 👍

Guy Raymond had a stallion I'm pretty sure by the name of Marazion when I worked for tony lopes , he was getting on in years , this was late 60s , ST.Albin had a lot of history including hiding away Phar Lap, the horse we had by Marazion was Vita, Guy use to visit.

There's something of an inference that everyone at Weir's stable knew what was happening, which imo is a long way from the truth.
Someone who had reason to travel through Miners Rest actually said she'd seen dim lights on in the middle of the night, suggesting much of the alleged chemical goings on might have occurredunder the cover of dark. And many wouldn't have had the opportunity to find that jiggers were being used.

| Gay, it’s all tied into Darren Weir and you know it. Don’t pick and choose which comments take your side and which don’t. I have no filter. I could dress my comments up like Second Chance does to suit your stance, but I don’t have that ability. You know damn well where my comments are pointed, and exactly what direction Second Chances point. He is clearly a Weir sympathiser and clearly I am not. Oh please. Whenever there has been anything published on here that remotely questions integrity, you have always done your best to play it down. I’m more than happy to throw my hand up for what I believe in, and I’m just as happy for you to do the same. What I won’t cop is being questioned by the “mediator”. If I put my comment on the Weir thread I would have had it censored or received an “inbox” comment. You write what you wish, and I’ll write what I wish to write. Funnily enough, people need to live & in order to do this, they either bludge off the government or seek employment. A few of those looking for work, love & have their own horses so, given racing is the main award paying equine industry, this is where they seek a position. However, most looking for work tend to prefer to seek jobs within driving distance of their residence which tends to narrow the choice, even more so, away from the major cities where many large stables are found. Labelling as a likely cheat, every employee or ex of any trainer convicted multiple times is extremely narrow minded & twisted, so much for the iconic "A fair go" You work in a racing stable, you put your head down & get on with it because if you leave for no good reason, a decent reference won't be forthcoming, the word quickly goes round & before you know it, you're stacking s/market shelves. Yes it is that bad.

Not at all! I'm saying that whilst staff may well know or suspect what a trainer's doing, it doesn't mean they condone it. Retention of jobs very often entails turning a blind eye, no matter the industry.

The industry has been screaming out for stable employees for years. It’s a known fact that it has trouble getting new participants involved due to the low wages and work conditions (eg hours). Don’t tell me that it’s an excuse for an employee of a training establishment to turn a blind eye to what their employer is doing because they would find it hard to find another job, are you kidding me?. Sleep with dogs and you get flees, and this arrangement has infestation written all over it.

What good is a glowing reference when remuneration is at the award rate?
When I play cards with the kids, I give them the opportunity to pick up their trump card if they've gone early with it. They know that I know they've got it, but the aim is to help them get better at the game.... that being said, I think it's only fair that you get the opportunity to pick the gender card back up & hang on to it for another day.

You're wasting your time Gay, because all the experts here know in their own minds that everyone on the payroll with Weir well knew what was going on.
In reality a handful or two clearly would have known about the jiggers, because you have to remain "tight" to kep int in house. Others may have clearly suspected. Most employees however simply strapped or shoveled sh1t and were just glad to be employed.
However there's actually two issues here: one is about jiggers (the disqualification) and the other about Chinese "herbs" and associated "assistance". Weir pleaded no contest to the animal cruelty (jigger) charge and was probably relieved to cop just four years.
Because as for the other, which was what I earlier referred to as "activities under the cloak of dark" I believe without evidence that this was where animals were injected or swallowed all sort of stuff before efficacy was proven one way or another on the training track. Failures (and there is evidence) ended up at the tip or the doggers. But that aside, only a few employees would have known diddly about subsequent doping.
Where Maddie fits into all this is your call.

| The point was made that finding staff is a major issue. So, when one walks in the door and says they've been at Joe Bloggs' joint for five years, or months, and they have the payslips to prove it, the reference becomes moot.

For a start. Daniel Bowman and Mitch Freedman we’re working about a dozen older broken down ones that needed the beach. They weren’t there during Weirs “prime”. Maddie Raymond was, and now she trains a couple under her own name out of Lindsey Smiths stable. This is heading exactly the same way as Weir and McLean. I’m more than happy to cal it guilt by association, just as I will listening to the silence from the “believers” when one or both get outed.

I can assure you both were foremen consecutively at Miners Rest when blinkers hung ominously & continuously on one particular treadmill, tho' in their capacity, they didn't operate these, that I'm aware of. However, despite turning a blind eye, they certainly learned how to train well as evidenced by their results. blah blah blah. So the horse, Wentwood, that was racing in Group company in Europe, now bought and owned by the same individuals that race a So You Think (entire) that had 8 starts for 5 WINS and TWO SECONDS for Weir and now in the hands of Lindsey Smith, has been handed over to an individual who has had their license five minutes. You don’t think for one minute this is odd? An owner with ties to both Weir and Smith giving a horse to someone with absolutely no credentials other than also having ties to the same people?. I can remember Smith and a couple of his owners throwing McLean a bone or two not so long ago, namely Cougar Express and Trap For Fools.

Too right. Come on you jokers. You must have been around stables long enough to know how things work ?? Surely ??? If you havnt been, and you dont know, get your heads out of the sand and go work in a stable for awhile and try your luck as a snitch when seeking other work. I never even worked in a racing stable, but I did do the hard yards in other breeds stables, and if you dont believe word travels, and work drys up, when you try and do the right thing by the horse, when your employer is an ass, you live in La la Land.
On the other hand, work for a straight trainer and you have no worries.

Doesn’t bode well for the horses, when even the people who feel sorry for them and know that it’s wrong, have to swallow their objections and principles, just to stay in the industry they love? It all comes back to the love of money, which in many cases exceeds all else. Pity those that put success at whatever cost to the kind and obliging horse, can’t find a job working with racing cars, bikes, boats, anything that can’t feel stress, pain or discomfort🥵🤬

That brave young lady Kate Goodrich went to RVL with a tale of woe, one of the worst bullying stories I've ever read, RVL were disgusting in their investigations, the behaviour there was and still is in question, and I believe this is before the courts. I hope Kate gets her just rewards, her life will never be the same. The reason I mention this in the same context Disco, is that in my opinion RVL is not to be trusted, if the behaviour at Weir's was Victoria's worst kept secret, for so long. then he should have been gone many years ago.

Appreciate the KG story, whilst not fully understanding it. When mediation is called in it is apparent that someone isn’t prepared to take some responsibility for the situation. My comment was in response to one made about if you snitch to the authorities, your career is doomed. I would imagine if you were honest and snitched on Weir for instance, there would be no way you’d get a run in stables like Lamming or Gelagotis, if of course “the word gets out”. But to hold the opinion that you are doomed if you do is delusional. If you had the qualities stables like P.Carey, G.Eurell, N.Blackiston, P.Payne, M.Moroney, etc are needing, I’m sure you’d be employed.

I often thought the same thing about Lloyd's (ahem!) trainer - Liam H. He was 2IC at Smerdon's stable prior to Macedon Lodge - clearly remember him there around the Mosheen era. I'm yet to reconcile, when you're second in charge, if you don't know what's going on surely you're derelict in your duties. If you did know what's going on, well, I'm really not sure how to finish that sentence...

Good question, however to be fair Simon was with Aquanita for a very short time before accepting the appointment as its WA trainer. He departed Victoria in 2008, almost 12 years ago now.

Turaath in line for $1.6 million prizeTuraath has put herself in line for a $1.6 million pay day after the English-bred mare extended her winning run in Melbourne to four with a gusty victory in the Group 2 Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. The Maddie Raymond-trained mare overcame a wide run and some worthy rivals to score in what is the first leg of a new $1m bonus for mares who win the Let's Elope and follow it with victory in the $1m G1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) on October 30. In quite an extraordinary performance, Turaath managed to race wide for the majority of the 1400-metre race but still kicked clear inside the 200-metre mark to establish a winning break. On the line, Turaath ($5.50) was a length-and-three-quarters clear of Mystic Journey ($14), who finished on from the rear, with fellow Tasmanian mare Still A Sar ($6) a neck away in third. The win registered a treble for jockey Damian Lane, after earlier Flemington victories aboard Tooradin (Race 1) and Harbour Views (Race 5). "I'm still shaking," Raymond said after her first Stakes success as a trainer. "I had to catch my breath coming down here. I'm super excited. "She's such a tough mare. She didn't do it easy again. She sat out wide with no cover and she was rock-hard fit and super competitive. "She stepped just half a stride slow. We did think she'd settle wide with cover, which didn't work out either. She was super fit going into it. Such a tough, honest horse. "We've been looking for a reason not to come (to the races today) and give her a break but she's so tough. If anything, you treat her like a colt. She eats well, she thrives off her work and she's shown that today." Raymond said that although she is concerned the mare has been up for a while, she will look at stepping her to 1600 metres for the first time in the Empire Rose. "The way she relaxed today - even in the mounting yard and out the back - she's definitely improving," she said. Lane explained that he'd never ridden the mare before but did expect her to lead. "She normally flies the gates and everyone was probably expecting her to lead, but it didn't eventuate and I let her cruise through her gears and she sat third," he said. "I was always confident in the run that I had plenty in the locker." $4 favourite Instant Celebrity got a long way back and while she did make some ground late for sixth place, vets later revealed she had mucus on the scope following the race.

In-form Raymond builds teamMaddie Raymond ended her career-best season on a winning note at The
Valley on Saturday when Home Rule provided her 19th win for the season. Striking
the winners stall at 20 per cent in recent months, it's Raymond's
quality over quantity approach which saw the young trainer notch three
Group wins across the season. As she prepares for the upcoming
spring, the Warrnambool-based trainer will have some familiar names but
also new names she hopes will continue the winning run next season. Raymond will stick to a sprinting preparation with Turaath as she plots spring goals with her leading mare. “We
always thought last prep we would try and stretch her out to a mile but
I think she is best at that 1200-1400 metre trip,” Raymond explained. “She
ran third to Marabi in the Australia Stakes and that was in
preparation for a 1400 metre run so I think we will train her a bit more
like a sprinter rather than teach her to settle for a mile. “Something like a Manikato might be up her sleeve this time.” Stringing
four wins together last year culminating in the G2 Lets Elope at 1400
metres, Raymond stretched the mare out to 1600 metres in her autumn
campaign. Raymond said other sprinting races such as the Schillaci, Moir and Darley Sprint are also on her radar. “She’s a ripper, she’s very tough and very honest,” Raymond professed. “She had a decent break and probably hasn’t had one ever in her life because they don’t really spell them like we do overseas. “We probably won’t see her until a bit later on the spring. “She is just starting her fast work now.” Raymond has also added a new acquisition to her Warrnambool base in Heart of Puissance, but he won’t be seen this spring. “We are going to give him a break,” Raymond explained. “His preference is those softer and wet tracks and he has had his niggles along the way so we’ve gelded him as well. “But just a change of environment and the beach access will help him immensely.” The
six-year-old has raced 14 times for four victories. He last raced
during the Warrnambool Carnival finishing second after eight months on
the sidelines. Another newcomer to join the stable is former Lloyd Williams-owned
galloper Cormorant who Darren Freyer paid $105,000 for via online
auction earlier this year. “He’s good really really good overseas form and didn’t bring that over to Australia,” Raymond admits. “But if we can regenerate that he is a really handy horse. “We gave him a break and he’s at Fulmen Park on the water walker and due back next week. “If he puts his hand up he might be seen later in the carnival as well. “He is the kind of horse that would match up against Wentwood in the bigger country cups.” With his ownership group, Raymond said the 2023 Warrnambool Cup could be high on his agenda. Last years Bendigo Cup winner Wentwood would be put on a similar path which also includes the Coongy and Ballarat Cup.
