The Vic season gets underway today with 3 competitive races at the Bool - a Steeplechase & 2 hurdles. The SA season kicks off on 27th Mar with a hurdle at Strathalbyn, whilst over in NZ they start off at Rivertown next month.

There’s already been a few trial days with last seasons stars like Zed Em, Self Sense, Bit of a Lad & Killarney Kid all back in work. Also lots of interesting newcomers too.

Patrick Payne & Ciaron Maher look to be building strong teams. Ciaron in particular has some interesting horses, including 2 UK jumpers - Yensir (who won his last 4 jumps starts in the UK) and Light Pillar (who ran 4th in the Queen Alexandra Stks at Royal Ascot last year).

Gai Waterhouse also has Goodwood Zodiac being educated, an imported stayer who has shown glimpses on form on the flat.

If anyone has spotted something from the trials they fancy let us all know.

I’m looking forward to seeing Patrick Payne’s NZ gelding (Ours) run in the Chase today, he’d be a likely Oakbank contender come Easter time.

Great effort by Maher to get Bit of A Lad to win first up with a huge weight.

Thought Lucques still has lot to learn with his jumping, but was still good enough to win. He is a superior stayer on the flat compared to that field.

Nice to see King of the Forest win for the first time for a few years.

He was originally trained by the late, great Guy Walter. There can’t be too many (if any) of Guy’s horses still going around. I think Jacquinot Bay is retired?

Days Go By is a very interesting runner too. French-bred mare owned by AJRA president Sandy McGregor.

This is the second year.
Reason: To please the protestors who thought it was too tough to have the von doussa and great eastern two days apart.

Now they are 15 days apart. Then after the Great eastern is 8 days to the Brierly and after that 2 days to the Grand Annual.

The calendar is too cluttered because of the late Easter this year.

Gai Waterhouse had a few very interesting horses at the Cranbourne jumps trials this morning.

Kushiro - an unraced Japanese-bred 4yo with Gai Waterhouse

Goodwood Zodiac - an imported UK stayer

Just A Joke - a nicely bred High Chaparral 4yo

Compton - a 1 start maiden

Look forward to seeing how these guys progress over the season.

Ciaron Maher & Patrick Payne also had quite a few good ones trial today, including Big Blue (who was 2 from 2 last year & expected to measure up to the feature hurdle races later in the winter).

Here is what happened Sparticus:

This year's jumps racing season will be without one of its stars after the death of Monarch Chimes.

Monarch Chimes went amiss on the flat with 800 metres remaining in his 2800-metre steeplechase trial at Cranbourne last Friday.

Braidon Small in Coma

Racing.com Staff

9:38am

Jumps rider Braidon Small is in an induced coma and could undergo surgery as soon as Monday morning after suffering a delayed reaction to a head injury at Sunday’s Pakenham jumps meeting.

Victorian Jockey’s Association chief executive Matt Hyland explained on Monday morning that Small, 27, fell from Startierra in the 3200-metre hurdle but apart from a sore knee, he told medical staff that he felt OK.

He was cleared to leave the track – he was driven home by his partner - but several hours later was admitted to hospital at Warrnambool after waking at home with a headache.

Hyland said after scans showed some bleeding to the brain, he was put into an induced coma and flown to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Small, who is the son of the former star Vo Rogue’s rider Cyril, is one of the state’s more prominent jumps riders having won the Galleywood Hurdle aboard Two Hats at last year’s Warrnambool May carnival.

30-length win to jumps debutant

Brad Bishop https://www.twitter.com/bradbishop12" rel="nofollow - @bradbishop12

14 April, 2019

Those eyeing the maiden hurdles during the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival would be breathing a sigh of relief after watching the first event at Racing.com Park (Pakenham) on Sunday.

They no longer have to worry about Goodwood Zodiac, who is now ineligible for maiden events after a dazzling performance in the $35,000 E-Cycle Solutions Maiden Hurdle (3200m).

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained import led his rivals a merry dance in the 3200-metre event and despite being eased up over the concluding stages by jockey Shane Jackson, still had 30 lengths to spare over his rivals at the line.

It was the first jumps start for the six-year-old, whose previous outing was in the Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day.

His preparations for Pakenham included three hurdle trials, the most recent a 2800m event at Cranbourne on April 5, which he won by four lengths.

The maiden hurdles at Warrnambool on April 30 might be off the table, but there are still a couple of options for the Waterhouse/Bott team should they wish to head to Australia’s premier country carnival.

On Day 2 – May 1 – is the $150,000 Galleywood Hurdle (3200m) with the $50,000 Champion Novice Hurdle (3200m) on Day 3 another option.

Jack Frost (Image: Race Images South)

Jackfrost (Image: Race Images South)

Kiwi jumper bound for Australia

Plans are underway to have Jackfrost, last year’s top hurdler, in Melbourne for a possible tilt at a couple of the feature steeplechases.

Jackfrost ended last season with a hat-trick of wins and notably completed the Grand National Hurdles (4200m) – Great Northern Hurdles (4200m) double.

He won the Riccarton feature effortlessly by eight and a half lengths and the manner in which he charged home late to claim the Great Northern Hurdles at Te Aroha suggested he could also star in the role as a steeplechaser with Melbourne in consideration.

Wingatui trainers Brian and Shane Anderton have given the Gallant Guru eight-year-old two recent runs in preparation for a planned Melbourne campaign, but the extremely testing track at Invercargill on Sunday prevented Jackfrost from having more than just have a run under his belt when third-last in a Rating 72 handicap over 1600 metres, which was run in 1.53.72.

‘’He pulled up all right, but you couldn’t take much out of the run,’’ Shane Anderton said.

‘’The ground was just too heavy. He had 60kgs on his back and he was not ready for a track that heavy. But it was a bit more mileage for him before Australia.

‘’He’ll have another run over here at Riccarton on the flat over 2000m (on May 31) and if we’re happy with him he’ll then fly straight over.’’

Jackfrost is booked to be flown to Sydney on June 2 and be floated down to Melbourne, where he will have to pass a schooling test over steeplechase fences.

‘’He’ll have to qualify over there, as they all do, and his first run will probably be a maiden steeplechase,’’ Anderton said.

‘’The big thing is what weight the handicapper will give him over there. We’re trying to find that out this week.

‘’Really there is still a lot of water to go under the bridge, but we’re happy with him. He’s done plenty and seems to be coming up well.’’

Jackfrost’s preparation included a satisfactory school over the steeplechase fences at Wingatui last week in the hands of Jake Lowry.

The plan is to have Jackfrost based at Ballarat and there is a maiden steeplechase over 3200m at the local meeting on June 18 with the main mission, the A$350,000 Grand National Steeplechase (4500m), on the same track on August 25.

Between times there are such options to consider as the Mosstrooper Steeplechase (3500m) at Pakenham on July 21 and the Crisp Steeplechase (4200m) at Sandown on August 4 with the latter being the usual lead-up to the Grand National.

3 jumps races at Casterton today. Let’s have a go with some tips:

R1 No 9 Truly High - 5yo by High Chap making his jumping debut. He’s won a couple of flat races in town last year & both flat runs this time in have been sound.

R2 No 3 The Other Half - ex Kiwi (& a half bro to good jumper I’ll Ava Alf) who was strong at Mt Gambier & can win again. Danzadoozie was a handy type but been 3 years since he raced over jumps so prefer to watch him.

R4 No 6 Police Camp - first jumps run this campaign was solid & I think the longer trip & Casterton steeplechase course will suit him. I’ll be on him each way, much better value than the even money about Ascot Red.

Good luck to all!

Tough day down at Casterton

If Golden Flag jumps well, he should be too good for them. But he tends to make a few mistakes. Truly High is one to watch as his Coleridge, ex Godolphin first up since Jan and only having his 3rd race start. Trials have been okay.

In the 2nd, very open race. I thought Fulmineus was overs , he jumped well at Hamilton on Thurs. if he handles the back up, I thought he could be a blow out.

The Steeple looks a tough race. Old Mannertone loves Casterton. Surging Wave first up since September is interesting, he could be a blow out. Ascot Red is indeed for mine, still does a bit wrong. Wouldn’t shock to see Pentomatic win either, he was good at Warrnambool.

And in the Cup, I think Pickelhaube will be winning. He was impressive first run new stable last time.

Speedy Jax wins inaugural Two Rivers Steeple

Matt Welsh

4:40pm

Casterton played host to the inaugural Two Rivers Steeplechase on Sunday’s Cup Day program and the Patrick Payne-trained Speedy Jax took out the $75,000 feature.

Casterton is the only track in Australia to feature a full live-hedge course and Sunday’s Two Rivers field were asked to negotiate twenty steeples on the gruelling 3800 metre course.

Racecaller Ric McIntosh provided the inspiration for the race. ‘Where the Wannon meets the Glenelg’ is how Ric describes the section of the live hedge steeplechase course where the horses move toward the south-east section of the track, and he certainly didn’t forget to use the phrase during Sunday’s feature.

New Zealand eight-year-old Speedy Jax was making his Australian steeple debut having had two runs on the flat since landing in Victoria.

Incredibly, as the field of nine headed over the 18th of 20 steeples there was just a couple of lengths separating first and last.

It was a stirring finish to the inaugural Two Rivers Steeplechase with just 0.4 lengths between the first three over the line.

Speedy Jax claimed a gritty and determined Pentomatic in the straight before defying a challenge from the race favourite Ascot Red, who flew late and only needed another couple of strides to claim victory.

All nine competitors finished the testing 3800-metre course in a dashing display of jumping.

For jockey, Adam Roustoby, it was the biggest win of his career, in fact, it was his first win since he piloted Vixenite to victory at Merton back in 2014.

There were two other jumps races on the Casterton card, with Amy McDonald and Richard Cully combined to take out the opener with Tara Dreaming while Murphy’s Delight was victorious in the Open Hurdle (race 2) for legendary jumps trainer Eric Musgrove with Shane Jackson in the saddle

Looks like a super day of jumps racing action at Sandown today. Can’t wait to get out there.

Novice Hurdle - well I was on EUROMAN at the Bool & he did the right thing by me & jumped pretty cleanly for a debutant. I’ll stick with him again today.

Aust Hurdle - another horse I backed at the Bool was CHEQUERED FLAG & I’ll butter up again today. Last start on the flat he ran well in a G3 at Morphettville & 3 runs ago was only beaten 4 lengths by the all conquering Steel Prince!!

Aust Steeplechase - after a good 3rd behind Zed Em & Gold Medals in the Brierly Stple, DORMELLO MO ran a decent race on the flat at Mt Gambier. I think stepping to the 3900m at Sandown should be perfect for him.

Good luck to all!

I’ll be cheering for my old favourite Spying on You in the Steeple.
Always tries so hard, would be great to see him win. Sir Lopez on the back up from Race 8 at Cranbourne Friday night is interesting, Gold Medals the one to beat.

Chequered Flag and Killarney Kid look to be hard to beat over the Hurdles. Casiraghi was good at Oakbank, made a mistake the other day at Gawler which cost him, obviously come through the run okay. He might be able to sneak a place at odds.

The first hurdle looks very difficult, Who’s Says I’m Ready was good last time, Euroman hard to beat though.

When they try to land on all 4s vs. front then hind, after every jump, as did Goodwood Zodiac, you know they're sore over the back &/or sacroiliac Cry He did well to stay on his feet & fight on for 4th.

Goodwood Zodiac should’ve been pulled up.
Was an awful watch, couldn’t lift his legs at the jumps at the bottom of the hill.
He needs a decent spell.

I saw Sir Lopez in the yard on Friday night and thought gee thats a fit looking horse, then I saw the trainer... certainly knows how to train a stayer!

4000m hurdles will be his go.

There’s a 4000m hurdle at Ballarat on GN Steeple day in August.

But kudos to Brett Charry with Mr Coyne. I think he’s only got 2 horses in his stable, this guy and the stable stalwart in Grassini.

If he was allowed to stride today he probably jumps a heck of a lot better and has that race won a long way from home.

Instead it was turned into a relative sprint home asking both winner and runner up to jump the last 2 poorly despite what Ric likes to call.

Track looked in great shape for a June day!

Some pretty good racing.

Maybe Casterton should be holding a few more meetings during the winter?

Symon Wilde is looking at sending his star jumper Gold Medals to the US
$400,000 steeplechase at Far Hills, New Jersey on Oct 21. “The jumps over in the US would suit him because they are in between our hurdles and steeples.”

Quarantine conditions are favourable and would allow for him to travel back in time to be prepared for next years Annual.

Great to see two-time G1 winner in Gallante get back into the winners circle.

Cruised home to win the Awapuni Hurdles 2900m. Would be great to see Rogie come back over the Tasman for some of the Australian feature hurdle races in the next few months. Although the NZ Grand National & Great Northern Hurdles are more likely targets this season.

I think we might have just seen Patrick Payne’s next Grand Annual horse win the maiden Steeplechase today - Sweet Lullaby. Whether that’s 2020 or 2021, not sure as she’s only currently a 4yo.

Part owned by form analysts Deane Lester & Mark Hunter.

Great stamina pedigree too - by Monaco Consul from a dam line featuring Don Eduardo, Touching Wood & Fairs Fair.

Tips for the 2 big races today at Morphettville:

SA Grand National Stple - Speedy Jax
SA Grand National Hdle - Euroman

Both consistent & no reason to jump off either

Speedy Jax looked terrible pre race and ran accordingly.

Thanks SD. Pays to watch the horses in the mounting yard. Whilst Speedy Jax was an abject failure, it was nice to see local jumps stalwart in Barry Brook win with Searaven.

As for my other tip in Euroman......an amazing job my Jarrod Lynch to stay aboard. Really showed the benefits of the new flexible plastic running rails. And a fantastic finish between Double Bluff & Andrea Mantegna. And 150/1 shot ran the race of his life for 3rd place.

Big meeting at Hastings NZ today with 5 jumps races including the Hawkes Bay Hurdle over 3100m & Steeplechase 4800m.

We get to see 2016 Sydney Cup winner GALLANTE in the Hurdle.

The Steeplechase field is only a field of 7 but it’s interesting that all 7 runners have the blood of the mighty Sir Tristram running through their veins - with sires like Zabeel, Yamanin Vital, Zed, Colombia & Sunray all represented.

I like CHOCOLATE FISH, he’s 4th up from a spell and excels at these marathon trips - no wonder looking at his breeding - by Colombia out of an Ardross mare!

And locally we’ve got 3 jumps races at Casterton - he’s proving a bit costly for me in recent starts but I’ll get on POLICE CAMP again in the Steeplechase.

I think he did gallop on riderless.
Looks as though he started to get up and his stablemate Primostrat bumped into him.

Who Says Im Ready Slow to begin. Fell at the nineteenth obstacle. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have blood present in both nostrils however it could be attributed to external trauma. Stewards notified co-trainers T & K OSullivan that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced with the result of an endoscopic examination. The incident will be referred to the Jumps Review Panel.

Primostrat Bounded at the start. Over raced in the early stages. Made a faulty jump at the fifteenth obstacle and knuckled on landing. After jumping the nineteenth obstacle was retired from the event after being checked to avoid the fallen horse. Failed to negotiate the final obstacle and was eased out of the event. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. The performance will be referred to the Jumps Review Panel. When questioned R Short explained after making a faulty jump at the fifteenth obstacle the gelding failed to respond to his riding.

How about the flawless exhibition given by POLICE CAMP yesterday. Glad I stuck with him again at 7/2 win - thanks PC 👍. Sounds like he’s going to the Thackeray Stpl at the Bool next Sunday. Not sure he’s up to the top chasers this year, so probably prefer him back at Casterton in August. He’s only a young horse & can see him being a Grand Annual type in years to come.

And as for CHOCOLATE FISH in the Hawkes Bay Stple, well he was finishing powerfully for 2nd place & only just starting to warm up at 4800m! He’s a marathon specialist and right on track for the Great Northern Stpl over 6400m.

AL HARAM is definately an interesting runner in that maiden hurdle at Te Aroha today. As is 2016 Herbert Power Hcp winner ASSIGN.

And I’ll be very interested to see how TALLYHO TWINKLETOE goes at his Steeplechase debut. He won the NZ Grand National hurdle way back in 2015 and was then off the scene for 3 years, before coming back last season to win another hurdle.

From Te Akau:

Al Haram (6 g Sea the Stars – En Public) – Shaun Phelan; won a hurdle trial on 10 June at Cambridge, and sustained a big run for sixth last Saturday in the Rating 82 2100 metres at Ruakaka. Making his jumps debut in the $10,000 Maiden 3100 metres, he has an experienced rider aboard and brings the best recent form on the flat.

Bordering on one of those expensive flops.
Unless of course they planned on importing him for a $10k maiden hurdle in NZ

R3 - No.3 - Gallante - hot favourite but Rogie looks to have got him in great form. Win

R5 - No.2 - Chocolate Fish - looking for every inch of today’s 5500m trip, will keep grinding home when others are faltering. Win

GAWLER

R1 - No.4 - Sweet Lullaby - she’s very promising & the great P.Payne/R.Cully combo, enough said. Win

R2 - No.2 - Felix Bay - first jumps run this year but his last flat run was very tidy & gets Pateman aboard. Each way.

Yes horseshoe, the NZ jumpers let me down at Trentham. But it was all recouped in full with the win on Felix Bay at Gawler - great ride by Pateman & Amy McDonald has definately got the knack with jumpers.

Noticed a Kiwi invasion into Aust jumping ranks over the next few weeks. You’ve mentioned Jackfrost & Gobstopper are both already here.

Amy McDonald has picked up Master Poet (by Mastercraftsman) & Ciaron Maher has got Ablaze (by Raise the Flag).

Craig Phelan is here with Cochise and Shelly Houston returns with Lucky Tonight & Clapathuna.

The next 2 months of jumps racing will be hotly contested 👍
